I bought a Savvy Rest 3-layer mattress last year from ECO Sleep Solutions in Eugene Oregon. I got a medium-soft-soft combination of layers (from bottom to top) and I must say it’s the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever had.

I initially bought a medium-medium-soft, and while my wife loved her side, I found my side to be a little firm. But thanks to their 90-day layer-exchange policy I was able to change the medium on my side for a soft and get it just right. Savvy Rest lets you swap-out layers of latex for only the cost of shipping. I can’t see any reason why a person should not be able to get one of these mattresses to suit them, especially since you can swap layers as many times as you want within 90 days.

My queen organic mattress cost me $1,999, plus $85 shipping for the layer swap. This was the most economically priced ORGANIC mattress out there. I did a bit of research first, and while you can find cheaper mattresses, they most likely will not have certified organic wool and cotton casings and they will also probably use latex that is blended with synthetics. Savvy Rest is one of the few companies that use all natural rubber latex- no blends or synthetic materials in the latex. Having no synthetic chemicals or materials was important for me.

Savvy has a specific warranty covering any sagging of the mattress, so there is no reason why a person would have to put up with that. My friend who recommended Savvy Rest has had theirs for about five years with no sign of any sagging. And from what I’ve read on other blogs, people say the Savvy Rest mattresses stand the test of time very well.

I would recommend this mattress highly.

I purchased this mattress for two reasons: 1. I wanted a toxin-free mattress, 2. this was one of the best rated "green" mattresses out there at the time. What a costly mistake! It's touted for being an extremely comfortable mattress, but my back and hips say otherwise every night.

I'm a side sleeper and I am constantly shifting from one side to the other because of sore spots in my hips.(Mind you, I'm only in my 30's.) I did switch layers trying to get the most comfortable combination, but this just added to the cost of what was already an expensive mistake. The layers I received also arrived dirty in places, the wool layer appears very thin, and the cover is rough (I lose skin when I tuck in my sheets!)

When I talked to customer service about exchanging layers the first time, they told me: "Maybe a latex mattress just isn't right for you"--not a problem if they would have been willing to let me return it. As it is though, I'm stuck with a mattress that causes pain and keeps me from getting a solid night's sleep at anytime. (I currently have three dunlop layers: two soft and one medium.) It's too bad because they sounded like a good company with good intentions prior to my purchase.

Pros:

"Green", organic, toxin-free mattress.

Cons:

Uncomfortable, causes pain, cost, no returns.

Layer exchange, while it sounds good in theory, is expensive.

Did I say it causes pain??

We purchased a Savvy Rest Serenity mattress with all natural Dunlop latex from The Natural Sleep Store . With free shipping and a $160 gift certificate to be used in their online store, we felt this was the best price for this mattress. The mattress was drop shipped from the manufacturer in Virginia. The customer service, packaging, instructions were all immaculate. The latex layers and mattress cover were shipped via UPS in sturdy 2'x2'x3' boxes and were not vacuum packed.

This Savvy Rest Serenity mattress is a three layer Dunlop latex mattress that can be ordered with the firmness layers of your choice - like SleepEZ, FloBeds, etc. We prefer the Dunlop latex over Talalay latex because we prefer a firmer, less bouncy mattress. The total depth is about 10 inches with the cover. Our mattress has firm, medium and soft layers - each of which are split so we can customize each side. Savvy Rest's ILDs are around 30 for soft, 35 for medium and 40 for firm - although one side of the latex is somewhat firmer than the other, These ILDs are just approximations. You can further customize by putting the firm side or the soft side up - for a total of six firmnesses (two per layer of latex). We put the soft side up for all but one of the half layers. My husband's side is a hair firmer with the firm layer firm side up.

The unbleached cotton twill mattress cover is very well made. It has a sturdy brass zipper so the entire top (which is quilted with and inch of wool batting) can be removed completely for dry cleaning. Getting an "organic" cover wasn't important to us but we do like the texture of the soft unbleached cotton twill better than the Damask or knit covers that other manufacturers offer. This cover is very sturdy yet flexible enough to feel the latex underneath.

We were very impressed with the customer service, attention to detail and advice from Savvy Rest. They advised us to try a soft/medium/firm configuration instead of the medium/medium/firm we had been thinking about. They said most exchanges were for softer layers. After trying several different configurations with these layers, we ended up liking the original firm on the bottom, medium in the middle, and soft on the top configuration best. It was nice to have the option to layer things differently if we had needed to.

I'd recommend looking at savvyrest.com very carefully and calling Savvy Rest for advice and information, then ordering from a retailer that offers free shipping ($219 from Savvy Rest) and possibly another perk. The mattress will ship directly from Savvy Rest. There are no returns. You can exchange latex layers free for 90 days but customer pays shipping both ways. Shipping for exchanging layers could get pricey. It is best to get it right the first time.

Pros:

Very comfortable. Not too soft. Not too firm. Not too bouncy or jiggly.

Lots of configuration possibilities with split layers.

We prefer the feeling of Dunlop latex over Talalay latex. (see forum for Dunlop vs. Talalay discussions.)

Well made unbleached cotton/ wool cover with removeable top. Organic might be more important to some.

Great customer service and support. Informative manufacturer and retailer web sites. Can order free samples of the latex and mattress cover.

Ships via UPS.

20 year warranty.

Cons:

Mattress with organic cover was a bit pricier than some of the competition (but less than most "organic" choices).

Exchanging latex layers to get the right comfort level is free for 90 days but customer pays shipping both ways. Can get expensive for heavy Dunlop latex.

Can't be returned for a full refund.
