I just felt the need to share my experience with switching from a medium-firm mattress to a plush pillowtop. It was a bad move--nothing against the mattress per se--but just something to consider STRONGLY before purchasing.

Firstly, every mattress' springs should withstand a good amount of pressure when pressed against. If it has too much 'give', it'll turn your spine into jelly. Brand name doesn't matter that much - the coil count and GAUGE of the coils do. Get something in the realm of 13-14 gauge and the bed will last. You might have trouble finding a salesperson that knows this info offhand though. And I previously held the belief (written all over the place by the mattress industry), that the surface is merely a matter of choice depending on one's comfort level. Not so for me as it turned out.

Firstly, I've never had problems sleeping on ANY surface prior to this. I could sleep on a hardwood floor, a futon, waterbed if it was a one-time thing. The bed I would return to has always been between firm and medium-firm.

So why did I go with the plush double pillowtop? Impulse. I'll admit, it did feel REALLY nice to lie down on when I sampled it in the store. Sleeping on it for 6-8 hours a night is a different story - a nightmare for me it turned out, really.

Well, I eventually got used to it. But after a few months, I started developing back pain that got progressively worse.

I've discovered now that for back sleepers like me, firm is the way to go. Oh well. I've got another experience under my belt.

I think, for my next bed, I'm going to go back to the basics though. Many Asians sleep on nothing more than a padded mat on the floor. As a matter of fact, I've done the same at one point in my life, and it's great!
