I have never slept better in my life than I do on a temperpedic mattress. I purchased my temperpedic "new classic" bedding set in a Queen size after testing numerous other brands.
Date Purchased: 2009
Price Paid: $0

Pros:

Like the 3 bears, I found because one mattresses too hard and another too soft until I discovered that the temperpedic was "just right".

Cons:

None that I can think of at the moment..

Lower Back Pain

Me: 5' 9" and 175-180 lbs.

My perference and sleep style: I perfer a firm bed with just thin soft top cushion layer. I typically start sleep on my sides, but I will end up on my back. Once in a while, I start sleep on my stomach (which helps me when my lower back is really bothering me), but I still end up sleeping either on my sides or on my back.

Past Beds: I have had Simmon Beautyrest pillow top and Sealy Posturepedic Firm from Costo. The Simmon was great and was from 15 years ago. Although it was pillow top, it was quite firm. But after 12+ years, it was sagging. I then bought the Sealy Posturepedic from Costco. The Sealy is firm, but has multiple comfort layers (memory foam, latex foam, other foam). Sealy was comfortable. Unfortunately, it started to sag after 3 years. Once there is some sagging (just fraction of an inch), my butt sinks in and it causes my buttocks and lower back to ache. Due to Costco's excellent return policy, I was able to return this mattress.

While shopping for new mattress, I tried Tempurpedic. It was extremely comfortable. I ended up getting the Advantage bed, because it is the firmest and best to my liking, plus it is the lowest price for Tempurpedic.

My issue with Tempurpedic was also raised by others. My butt sinks into the memory foam and there is no support for my lower back. This causes pain in my lower back when I wake up. The pain moves around, from my buttocks into my lower back. The pain varies from just sore and ache on some days to excruciating pain. It was bad enough that I had to go see Physical Therapy at Kaiser.

Excluding the lower back pain, I did slept better in the Tempurpedic than innnerspring. On the tempurpedic, I only wake up once or none during the night; and I didn't have any neck or shoulder soreness. On innerspring, I typically wake up 4-5 times when I toss and turn; and every once in a while my neck or shoulder is sore.

I thought that my body has to adjust to the Tempurpedic. So I used it for 1-1/2 months. I also tried to use a thicker cushion (mattress pad) to reduce the heat transfer and to firm up the memory foam, but that still didn't prevent the back ache. So, after 1-1/2 months of suffering lower back pain, I cannot stand the pain anymore and I returned it.

As for the sleeping hot, yes, I do feel that memory foam sleeps hotter than normal beds. But that didn't bother me.

It is really too bad that I need more support; so Tempurpedic is not the right bed for me. But this doesn't mean it won't work for you. I think people who likes soft beds probably can find the Temperpedic a good match. Beds are personal preference, so you should try it and decide for yourself. If you are new to memory foam, just make sure you get the return policy in writing before you buy. I believe Tempurpedic has 90 day return policy, but that is with coupon hundred dollars in fees for shipping. I was able to negotiate with the mattress retail store to offer no fee return.

Pros:

Comfortable (besides the lower back pain), less tossing and turning, no neck or shoulder soreness.

Cons:

Lower back pain from lack of support.

I admit, I fell for all the hype about this bed and ended up buying it back in 2005. We kept it exactly 4 days and returned it forfeiting our shipping cost of $350. I completely agree with the other reviewers. My biggest 2 complaints were that my hips and butt sank way too far into the mattress making my whole spine crooked. This caused me to have pretty sever pains in the morning when I woke up.

The other complaint is the heat factor, holy cow that mattress slept hot!!

I also recently learned that these mattresses give off chemical fumes that could make you sick or cause cancer.

Go with a latex mattress instead. Completely natural, safe, super comfortable, pressure relieving and is naturally temperature regulating.

Pros:

good return policy except for having to forfeit the shipping costs.

Cons:

Body sinks too much around hips.
Super hot to sleep on.
Gives off nasty chemical smell that could cause cancer.
