My wife and I are looking to purchase a latex bed.  We have been to our local bed stores and found the one that we like.  We both liked the Pure Latex Bliss Nutrition 11” model.

The Pure Latex Bliss Nutrition 11” model we were looking at consists of (from top to bottom):

470 Gram Weight Viscose Blend Mattress Fabric

Milliken Fire Retardant Layer

4” Pressure Relieving Natural Talalay Latex Rubber

6” Supportive Natural Talalay Latex Rubber

1” Stabilization Base Foam

We were looking for better price then what they are offering at $2249.99 mattress set with foundation or $1979.99 as mattress only.  While looking for a deal we stumbled on this great forum.  So we have spent a couple of days of reading the forums and looking for ideas.  In reading the forums we came across couple of manufacturers.

They are:

Custom Sleep Design (www.customsleepdesign):  They are offering an 11” mattress set for $2299 or mattress only for $2179.  Their construction consists of 6” base core, 3” middle layer and 2” topper layer.

The Mattress Factory (www.mattressfac.com):  They offer their 11” model for $2299.  Their model consists of choice of soft/medium/firm 5” HD foam base core with 6” Talalay Latex (36 ILD ONLY) on top.

Both of the above options are priced above Pure Latex Bliss.  In the forums we were reading that there are alternatives out there that are better priced than Pure Latex Bliss model.  And that we should be using “S” stores as a testing ground to figure out what kind of bed we like.  Does anyone know what other options there are out there?

We live in Central New Jersey.  Is there anything within 3 hours driving distance that we should check out?  Or is there any reliable mail order that we should be considering?

As a side note:  Does anyone know how Custom Sleep Design quotes prices for their beds?  I read in the form that someone got an Eastern King for $2499 with foundation, delivery and 2 King Latex Pillows and that is without any negotiations.

Thanks for your help!

It's nice to see you have done more homework and are better prepared than so many others looking for mattresses :).

There is a list of some manufacturers and retail outlets for NJ in reply #24 here and in reply # 27 there is a list for NY as well.

There is also a list of a fairly wide range of online outlets in reply # 9 here

Given the prices and construction they quoted you (only 6" of latex in a firmness that would be way to hard for many), I would not think matressfac offers the same value as the other two you mentioned. Sometimes "value" in this forum is different from "value" outside this forum so this is not to say I don't like what they say or that they have a "bad" mattress.

I would sure like to know who is selling a Pure Latex Bliss Nutrition 11" model in King size for $1979.99 as this is less than any website price I am aware of. Would you mind sharing where the price came from as this certainly increases it's value. If this is their everyday price for a King with 10" of latex (1" of poly), then they would be "in the range" of many custom manufacturers in terms of value. As you probably know I consider the Pure Latex Bliss to be a better value than any of the "S" brands and one of the best values offered by mass merchandising outlets in general. At this price they are certainly worth considering for more than just "testing". I do know that 1800mattress (owned by Sleepy's) has the Pure Latex Bliss available on their website for less than Sleepy's but only in NJ or NY (if you put in a different zip they are not available). They sell the Nutrition in a queen at the prices you quoted but not the king (King mattress only is $2519.99). Perhaps this is where your price came from but I am hoping that you discovered something I don't know about.

To my knowledge, Bob at Customsleepdesign prices his mattresses according to their construction which can vary quite a bit both in layering and thickness but typically as you mention they have 11" of latex (6"+3"+2"). They will usually suggest changing the ILD of the bottom layer to something firmer for someone who wants a thinner bottom layer. I have talked with him a few times and was impressed with both his service and with his way of customizing a mattress for an individual. While I didn't buy my mattress from him ... he was certainly on my "short list". Normally smaller manufacturers like this don't "double" their prices so they can give big discounts (a common practice elsewhere) but may offer smaller "discounts" or bonuses or even sometimes have sales with "lesser" price reductions. Value in places like this is available every day of the year that they are open and they usually have no need to create a "sense of urgency" with meaningless sales. Part of the reason I like them so much :).

Hi Phoenix,

I am sorry I forgot to mention that all prices I quoted were for Queen size.

I talked to Bob (owner) at Custom Sleep Design and he quoted me $2299 for Queen set with foundation or $2179 for Queen mattress only.  His mattress consists of 6” base core, 3” middle layer and 2” topper layer and it is all Talalay Latex.

I visited the Mattress Factory and I spoke to Ron (owner) and he quoted me $2299 for their Queen set with foundation.  But his mattress consists of 5” HD foam base with only 6” Talalay Latex on top.  And you don’t get to choose the firmness level for the Latex because it only comes in 36 ILD.  The only choice you get is to choose the firmness level of HD core.

The price I quoted for Pure Latex Bliss were for Queen Set and Queen mattress only.  And those are the prices I got from 1800mattress store near my home.  I came home and looked on online to get better price and they were the same on their website.  At Sleepy’s they quoted me more then they have it available their OWN website.

The only reason I mentioned King in my above post was for price comparison.  I got that price from this from.  It is mentioned on this thread here at reply #23.  User “casual” bought Eastern King for $2499.99 which includes the foundation and two free latex King Pillows.  And in that same thread on reply #27 he mentions that he didn’t do any price negotiations.  I was just trying to compare his Eastern King with Queen prices that Bob quoted me at Custom Sleep Design.  So as you can see that for only $200 more you can get an Eastern King but I am only limited to a Queen due to my bedroom size restrictions.

I went through most of those you suggested and here is the information that I have so far.  If I am missing anything please let me know.  From your reply #24:

http://www.mycustombedding.com/contact/info_2.html Local manufacturer. Make a range of latex and other mattresses.  Their only choice of Latex mattress is their “All Natural Latex Set” for $1968.90 for Queen Mattress only or $2767.90 for Queen Mattress Set with foundation.  There is no customization.

http://gohfw.com/map_and_directions.htm Retailer. Carries Corsicana which has several "partly latex" mattresses.  As far as their Corsicanaline goes they stopped carrying “Richland210-1” model which was their only all latex model.

http://theorganicnest.com/storeinfo.php Retailer. Carry what look like land and sky mattresses which are Dunlop latex.  They have their “Eco Clean 10” Latex Pillowtop Mattress” This mattress has 6” Dunlop core with softer 3”inside pillowtop for $2495.95.  Again no customization.

http://www.mattressstorenyc.com/default.asp Retailer. Carry several smaller "national" brands some of which make latex mattresses. Call first to ask specific questions about whether they have what you are looking for.  Don’t carry all latex mattresses.

http://www.thebedroomgalleries.com/contactus.html Retailer. Carry Englander, WJ Southard, And Sensa, all of whom make latex mattresses.  Has no info on Enlander.  WJ Southard does not offer a lot of choices.  WJ Southard’s all Talalay Latex mattress is $3299!  Sensa has medium density foam as their base layers in all of their mattresses.

http://www.lemoynesleeper.com/locations.html Regional manufacturer. Makes latex mattresses and has a retail outlet finder which includes NJ outlets on website.  I called about 6 of those retail outlets and they said they don’t carry Lemoyne Sleeper anymore since it was not selling well.

http://www.bondbedding.com/ Local manufacturer. They make hand made innerspring/natural fiber mattresses.  They don’t carry any all latex mattresses.

http://www.mattressfac.com/ Local manufacturer. Makes a range of mattresses including latex.  Please see my comment above for this manufacturer.

http://www.chiromatic.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12&Itemid=15 Local manufacturer. Makes latex mattresses but work "on appointment" only which usually is a code for "expensive".  Their all latex mattresses start at $3300 and up.

http://www.eastmanhousemattress.com/factory.html National manufacturer. Makes latex mattresses and may well be worth calling a regional licensee listed to find a retail oulet near you.  Said they will call back.

http://www.shifmanmattresses.com/retailers/ National manufacturer. Based in NJ. Has a retail outlet finder on their site.  No outlets in area.

http://www.whitelotus.net/retail-locations.html Regional manufacturer. Based in NJ. Makes all latex mattresses as well as other natural mattresses.  Their only latex mattress is their “The Lotus Sleep System”.  It is made up of 6” Talalay Latex mattress with a separate 2” Latex topper.  The cost of the system is $2299 and no customization.

http://www.sleepys.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/LocateStores Retailer. Carries pure latex bliss latex mattresses.  Please see my comment above for this retailer.

http://www.sunrisemattress.com/Showroom_Locations.html Retailer. Carries OMI latex mattresses.  OMIstarts at $4000.

http://www.hollandiaus.com/locations_us.asp Manufacturer from Israel. Some interesting latex mattresses.  Interesting!  I will have to take a drive to PA for this one.  Their Queen mattresses start at $2600 and up and no customization.

http://www.ashleyfurniturehomestore.com/storelocator/StoreList.aspx?countrycode=USA&country=United%20States&statecode=NJ&state=New%20Jersey Manufacturer. Carries 3 models of latex with a poly core mattress.  Waiting for them to call me back with pricing and materials information.

http://www.duxiana.com/us_en/locate_duxiana.shtml Manufacturer. Makes high end mattresses.  These are all spring mattresses.  Their basic DUX 1001 starts at $4980 for Queen.  Their middle line is at $6780 and their top of the line is at $9510 all in Queen size.

So with the construction listed above for Pure Latex Bliss, what is the equivalent when I go to a custom mattress manufacturer?  What kind of ILD should I ask for as the topper or the core?  And should I do a two layer construction like the Pure Latex Bliss (not counting the Stabilization Base Foam layer or three layer like some of the others?

Again thank you for your help and knowledge.

Thanks for clarifying the PLB pricing. I thought that's what had happened but I was hoping you had made a great discovery I didn't know about. The custom sleep design pricing you quoted is a little higher than I thought for a queen but when I first talked to him I was talking in "approximates" as I hadn't yet decided where to buy from. His prices may have gone up a little or my "approximates" may be a little out but in eiher case I believe he offers great value as the "standard" mattress is 11" as opposed to the 10" of PLB and his method of customization and his exchange policies add greatly to the value of what he offers in terms of "getting it right". PLB is great when there are few other options and when someone doesn't have the confidence to order online. Even here though if someone was going to order PLB it would pay to do some online research as there are places which sell it for different prices.

Most of the time when I post a list it is so people can have places to test different latex combinations to determine the layering that works best for them so they can have confidence in ordering online which in many cases provides the best value. Sometimes there is also a local manufacturer on these lists which provides equal or better value to an online purchase in which case you have the best of both worlds (you get to try it and buy it at the same place :)). In many cases, the individual outlets change what they carry or their website information is incomplete or wrong which is why it's so important to call them first as you have done. This can help to narrow down where to go to get a better range of "testing grounds". In many cases I also include some local manufacturers who don't carry latex at all but make mattresses that some may be interested in looking at. My notes are usually to give a very rough indication of what someone may find there.

I usually ask a list of "standard" questions when I call them. If I am looking for testing grounds I just ask what they have available in latex that doesn't have more than 1" of poly in the comfort layers (for testing comfort layers ... poly or an innerspring core is less important). If I am looking for "value" to purchase I usually start with a quote for 9" of latex with a "simple" cover so I am comparing apples to apples. If they are in the ballpark, then I start asking more detailed questions more specific to what I want. If a store only had 1 mattress but was say 2 blocks away I would probably go there, oherwise the best testing grounds are stores that offer a range ... even if none of them can be customized.

In the case of the NJ and NY lists, as you can see, most of the outlets would be better for testing purposes but not so good to buy from. For example an OMI mattress ... while it is very expensive .. can provide valuable information as to the type of layering that can feel comfortable even though I believe they are too expensive (but for me they were a "reference point" as I really liked how they felt). Outlets that carry Natura would also make good testing grounds because they make a wide range of latex mattresses even though they are not customizable on an individual basis (I learned a lot about my own preferences and needs by using Natura mattresses as a testing ground among many others). Even a latex mattress that has a few inches of latex over a polyfoam core can provide valuable information as to what type of comfort layers works for someone even though they too may not have the value that makes them worth buying.

Some of the information you have "added" to the list is not quite accurate in terms of their usefulness for testing but since you already have good "testing grounds" it's probably not worth going into detail in each case. But just to give a couple of examples of what I mean ...

http://theorganicnest.com/storeinfo.php Retailer. Carry what look like land and sky mattresses which are Dunlop latex.  They have their “Eco Clean 10” Latex Pillowtop Mattress” This mattress has 6” Dunlop core with softer 3”inside pillowtop for $2495.95.  Again no customization.

Their 10" mattress comes in 3 different firmnesses so while each one can't be customized it can give you an idea of what different layering feels like. Land and Sky also makes a version which has a zip cover and can be customized. All of these are Dunlop so they can provide a "Dunlop" reference point in testing to help you determine how they feel in comparison to say the PLB Talalay.

http://www.thebedroomgalleries.com/contactus.html Retailer.

While the bottom layer of the Sensa does have poly, it is not a critical layer in terms of testing as the upper part (from a few inches to 9") is latex so what you would be feeling is latex. Again they would be a good testing ground. Pure latex bliss also has 1" of poly under it which in no way detracts from the value or feel of the mattress although theirs is thinner and doesn't perform quite the same function as in the Sensa. WJ Southard also makes several latex mattresses some in combination with springs and can be a good testing ground. Englander is one to be a little careful with as they make mattresses both with poly above the latex and without.

A couple of the manufacturers I listed make wonderful hand built mattresses that are insanely expensive ... some with latex and some without ... but they are absolutely loved by some people who can afford them. I personally question their "value" although I certainly don't question their quality. Some of these can be over $50,000.

There are a few local manufacturers on the list for NJ and NY that may provide a high value mattress that would be worth considering for purchase. Lemoyne for example makes several all latex mattresses (with 3/4" of poly on top) but there may be more profit for a retailer to sell cheaper materials at greater profit  and lower cost than Lemoyne in which case they would tell you "people don't seem to like them". The mattress industry as a whole IMO is a crooked place with lots of "misinformation". The smaller manufacturers ... especially if you are dealing directly with them ... will often give you much better and more truthful information. I talked with dozens of them for many hours and learned a great deal about their mattresses, mattress construction, and the industry in general ... although some would say I was a little "obsessive" in how far I took my research (laughing). There are probably more "value" manufacturers on the NY list than the NJ one.

In terms of the Pure latex bliss ... I would phone them (the manufacturer or a good retail outlet) and find out exactly what the layering is. Most of the websites that list them just call the upper layers on top of the core soft or super soft which is not accurate. A couple that are more specific are here http://www.mattresssave.com/index.php?mattress/shop/brand/6  and here http://www.stlbeds.com/nutrition-latex-mattress.html (I don't believe though that the nutrition comfort layers are firm and luxury firm or at least these "terms" are not accurate). Based on watching the PLB utube videos about their construction philosophy and in reading as much about them as I have been able to including their http://blissipedia.com/ site, I believe that the Nutrition would be a firm 6" core with 2" of medium and 2" of soft latex (similar to the Beautiful with 1" less of plush). I believe their "Plush" is about 19 ILD (possibly a little higher) and their toppers are 14 ILD. Their core would probably be around 36+ ILD and their "other layers" would vary depending on what they were trying to achieve in the feel of their mattress. Some may be a little less than the core (the 2" layers) and some may be firmer than the core (the 1" layer in the Nature). Interesting too that they use Celsion latex in their comfort layers (a "temperature regulating latex). I have been hoping that someone would take the time to contact PLB directly and resolve the "misinformation" about their specific construction but I may end up doing it myself as it would certainly make offering "suggestions" based on using them as a testing ground a little easier. I believe though that the mattresssave site is the most accurate of those I know.

In general terms as well ... most people would be happy with 8-10" of latex in a "correct" layering for them (a PLB Pamper with a 2" or 3" topper would be an example) but thicker constructions can sometimes provide more flexibility or a greater "range" of comfort/support for different sleeping positions and needs. Thicker is not necessarily better although it is usually more expensive.

Some of the online outlets in the list I posted will give you very good reference points in terms of value and different constructions that you can compare to local outlets. You will see all latex mattresses there that start at about $1000 in an 8" queen size and go up from there. The overall construction ... one sided/wo sided, type of latex, thickness of different layers, and the cover etc ... and the ability to exchange layers or do any further customization after a purchase ... and shipping costs ... are also an important part of a mattress purchase so it is sometimes a little misleading to compare them in terms of price per inch of latex alone.

Phoenix

PS: If you like the Nutrition I would also compare it to the Pamper with a 3" topper which would be similar (slightly more pressure relieving and slightly less supportive) with the same amount of latex in your mattress. If you purchased the topper elsewhere ... it would also be less expensive even though it would be the same quality and thickness of mattress. A Pamper with a 2" topper may also work better for some people than a 3" topper depending on weight and overall body shape (it could be slightly less pressure relieving and slightly more supportive than the Nutrition).

My friend just took delivery yesterday of the PLB Nutrition. He bought it under my recommendation since I have been research a new mattress for over a year. I have a latex pillow (made by LI) that I boughte ten years ago, still feels the same as the first day. When I set out to get a mattress I said I wanted something that was made out of the same material as my pillow. At the time in my area there were few options, with the exception of a few organic (very $$) options. It's great to see latex going mainstream and being sold in large retailers. Anyway, to my point..The Nutrition is absolutely magic. When I laid on it the beed felt just perfect; the perfect combination of firm and soft, simply perfect for us. My friend is VERY happy with his first nights sleep..Needless to say I already have a deposit on a king set for my wife and I, thats how nice this bed is. Best bed I have ever felt, and I think it is a memory foam KILLER in terms of the mattress market. Lookout Tempur.

Finally a bed thats comfortable and will last 20 years. Finally!!

Took delivery on our King size Nutrition and got an additional 2 inch PLB topper. It's absolutely fantastic. Lower back pain is nonexistant and I sleep more soundly, fall asleep quicker. I know all this sounds like a promotional ad but it is simply the truth. It's the best bed I have EVER felt, and I laid on countless mattresses over the course of the last year.

Can't speak for longevity yet, but comfort and quality seem to be top notch on this bed. The only thing I would say I dont like about the topper is it is two fused together twin pieces and you can sort of feel the seem in the center of the bed. Once sheets and mattress protector is on its not bad, but a point to note anyway.

Bed did not smell at all when we got it in the room which we expected it would;  it is extremely heavy (160 pounds) and difficult to manage moving.

This is easily one of the better purchaes my wife and I have made in years and feel like it's a sound investment. We're very happy with it. You owe it to yourself to at least try this before you buy ANYTHING else in this price range.

I'm searching for a new bed.  I've been reading online reviews which almost have me more confused than when I first began.  I've looked at Tempurpedic but feel that they are too hard (except for the new "cloud") and too expensive.  I also hear that they are often hot.  Living in Texas, that probably wouldn't be a wise choice.  Comforpedic seems to address the "too hot" issue, but they are also very pricey.  I'm not sure I'm willing to spend that much right now.

I like the softer feel of a latex bed, but have read that IF it is composed mostly of polyurethane, durability may be an issue and it may develop an impression.  The Dr. Breus beds seem nice, but are apparently mostly polyurethane (I'll check the tag the next time I go in).  Forum talk also indicates that they are overpriced although they are considerably less expensive than the Tempurpedic and Comforpedic beds.  I also looked at an Origins bed manufactured by Internat'l Bedding Corp as well.  It is considerably cheaper which is appealing but scares me.  I don't want to pay an overinflated price, but I've also learned that you often get what you pay for.

I am definitely interested in transitioning to a foam bed of some sort.  I have been told that foam beds are better for back pain and such.  I am recovering from shoulder surgery and have a history of back problems as well.  That's what happens when you aren't smart enough to stop playing sports even though you're too old. :P

Many of the mattress businesses I see referenced in this forum are in the northeast.  I'm in Texas.  Any suggestions...besides moving?

Use the "Search" function to search for Texas or Houston or Dallas.  I'm almost positive that Phoenix posted a list of Texas locations that sell latex.  I believe he also bought his mattress near Fort Worth.  It was a custom designed that he wanted.  Also search for Phoenix's posts.....there are many but it might be worth looking.  There were many locations.

He is no longer using this forum so don't wait for a reply from him but he left lots of good information.
