You are quite right, they do not make them like they used to.  If you want an "old-fashioned" (I mean this as a compliment) mattress you are likely going to have to investigate higher end products like McRoskey, Beckley, Hypnos, Vi-spring.  If you are Canadian, there is Marshall Mattress out of Ontario.  Good luck.

I would never buy a Simmons anything. Had one that wore out in less than a year.

Re: If LATEX IS SO GOOD WHY DO RETAIL STORES DON'T CARRY 100% LATEX MATTRESSES? - olenska

I think the point is that the commercial brands want you to buy a new mattress every 2 or 3 years. not every 30 years. which is the lifespan of latex. natural latex that is. so when serta goes to make a latex mattress, they use lab made US latex, which is not natural and has a high failure rate. why? so that you have to replace it in 3 years. same mindset as GM. and why they went bankrupt. simmons went belly-up as well in case you did not know that. got bought out for the name. the answer to your question is that the big names will not make it because it is so good. ah, america

you should be aware that all simmons mattresses made now, as opposed to a decade ago, are soft. even those rated by them as firm. they use a thin coil gauge in the coils and a ton of soft padding. if you don't need much back support go for it. I weigh under90 pounds and sank into a "firm" simmons. totally collapsed when I sat on the edge

Thanks Lloyd.

Do these come covered? or just foam?

Also, I was going to change my mattress, then add a topper.  If so, do you recommend a tight-top Simon and Fosters instead of my current Simmons?or shall I keep what I got?

I explained the differences earlier.

Thanks

Thanks so much for your feedback. I don't really feel like spending thousands of dollars for a Hypnos or Vi-Spring mattress, so I'm going to go with the Sealy Posturepedic Alanson ($400) at Costco. If it ever turns out to be defective, I can always return it to Costo for replacement or refund.

It's amazing that the only high-quality, innerspring mattresses that I could find, at what I assume to be a reasonable (read: not $5,000), mattress was from Gardner.

Thanks again. :)

I'm new to these forums and have begun researching my next mattress. A lot has happened since I purchased my last mattress on January 23, 1994 from Mattress Discounters in San Francisco for $280 plus tax. wink

My Simmons Maxipedic "Concorde" mattress' label says "America's Best Open Coil Bedding Value." I gather from this forum, that they don't make them like that anymore. Yet, I have had zero problems with it, have never even really flipped it, always label up at end of bed. Amazing huh?

Today, I went to Ikea to try their top-of-the-line $900 Dunlop Latex mattress, but I got that same sink-in feeling that you get with cheap foam mattresses. If Latex is indeed state-of-the-art, I'm going to beg off and have you help me find an innerspring mattress, because I prefer the firmer feeling springs can provide.

My husband and I slept on an $800 Simmons mattress for 9 years and it was just fine - I would fall asleep and wake up in the exact same position.  But about a year after I had twins, my whole body would ache in the mornings for about an hour until I would "wake up".  Sometimes I would have a bad back ache, too - not lower back, upper/middle.  Since our mattress was 9 years old at that point, I thought maybe we just needed a new one.  It go so bad that finally we just ran out one afternoon and picked one out from a local store - exactly what we had done the first time.  BIG MISTAKE!

It felt fine in the store, nice and firm. But when I slept on it, I woke up in so much pain that I literally had to sleep...

Re: Sams Club 100% natural latex mattress??? - bert76

Does anybody know if Sam's Club changed their 100% latex mattress?  It seems that it now has a bamboo cover rather than wool/cotton.  That change makes me wonder if other important factors have been changed.

Thoughts?

Like a lot of folks, it seems, I'm trying to decide between the Coscto 100% latex in king and the Sam's Club 100% latex in king.  Both seem to have their merits and are priced about the same right now.  I do like that the Costco one is flippable to different firmness levels.  And there certainly are a lot more reviews of the Costco mattress.  I've read through all of the  posts on the subject, but I'm still not sure which way to go.

I'm also considering the Simmons Natural Care Forevergreen Cushion Firm from JC Penney, mostly because we have a JC Penney Home...
