You should be able to get blended or 100% natural talalay or dunlop from sleepez.  Their prices are good, but they do charge $49 per order for shipping.  It is hard to know exactly what ILD will be right for you.  It seems that trial and error is the only way.

Note that latex will feel different than the memory foam.  The memory foam seems better at pressure relief (molding to the body), but since the ILD is so low it does not offer as much support.  However, I once tried 3" of memory foam on top of 6" of XF latex, and it felt pretty good.

Kimberly, since the top flobed layer is convoluted, the effective firmness is less.  They told me it is around 14, since half of the latex is cut out.  That is just an approximation though.  I wish that flobeds had more options for the...

Yes, but I agree with you that it would be nice to have more information on the performance differences.  Perhaps too hard to quantify and too subjective.  Even some generalties like 100% natural is denser so it should have more suport for heavier people.  Or blended less dense so it is more plush feeling, etc.

There seems to be little information out there to make an informed decision with.  Tthe party line that I seem to have heard is that the performance in basically the same.

Sandman: My personal belief is that blended latex exists because it is less expensive to produce. When you stop to think about it 70% of this product is petrochemical. Petrochemicals can be manufactured and purchased at a much reduced price over natural, from everything I can find on the Internet about this subject. Plus the fact that you do not have the potential international difficulties...
Re: So many choices (would like latex mattress preferably not go over $2000) - KimberlyH

Hi Dave,

When you first get started looking at latex, things can be confusing.  This is because there are many variables to latex:

1) The manufacturing method.  The oldest method is called Dunlop and a "newer" (but still around for decades) method is called Talalay.  You can read about the difference in the manufacturing method here:

http://www.latexfoam.com/index.php?did=12#1

Some people prefer Dunlop latex, some people prefer Talalay latex.  Some people think that Dunlop latex, being denser than Talalay latex, is more supportive.  I have tried mattresses made from both types of latex, and I don't believe this is true - provided you get the right firmness.

2) The type of latex.  Basically there are two types of latex:
     a) 100% natural botanically grown latex
     b)  Blended latex (typically 70% synthetic and 30% natural)

Read about the differences here:

http://www.latexfoam.com/index.php?did=12#10

Here again you will find a wide range of opinions regarging what is "best."  Some people are purists and...

I'm not going to jump into the density debate, but I can state that I am close to your weight and height, and three layers of extra firm blended Talalay at 36 ILD, with a convoluted topper of  . . . I think it's 28 ILD, provides excellent support with no bottoming out.

I don't know anything about the company you mention, but I wish I'd known about it when I was mattress shopping, as the prices seem a little better than Flobeds and they are within reasonable driving distance of where I live.

It looks from their FAQ that they are using 100% natural latex from LI, which is a good thing.

The only concern I have is whether you can specify exactly the ILD you want.  They, like some other firms, seem to break their latex into broad categories of "soft," "medium," "firm," "extra firm."  I would want to specify the...

Kimberly, You have 3 layers of 36ILD, which is less than 8", but I thought you said your mattress is 10".  Do you have another layer there?

I got samples of 28 and 32 ILD of Talalay Latex from Sleep like a bear.  I wanted to get a sample of 36, but they didn't have any.  I think that may be what I need.  I have (from Overstock which doesn't list ILD) 1 1/2" of firm latex (perhaps 44?), 1 1/2" of 24ILD Talalay (that was marked) and 1" 21ILD (Natura latex) and  1" cheap memory foam.  I need something more for my hip area, my shoulders are good.  I think this may be too soft, but I have no back pain so it isn't too soft.  The reason I think it is too soft is I feel trapped (sunken) by latex around the legs (below hip...

Jim, Thanks for the idea of more thinnner layers.   I hadn't thought of that approach.   My only concern is if several thin layers might move or shift more on the mattress.   My original latex mattress is sealed in a cotton/wool cover so I will be laying the layers on top of it.  So far, the 2 inch memory foam stays in place after I removed it's slippery cover and placed it on a non skid pad on top of the mattress.  This is covered with just a good fitted mattress pad and fitted sheets.    I'm now thinking of ordering a 2 inch "medium" and 1 inch "soft" from SleepEZ mattress components in the 100% Natural Talalay Latex.   The "soft" would be kind of like the top layer that Flobeds uses.

I figure I try this, if not good I get 100% return, then at least I will know if I like latex or not...next would be Flobeds or Habitat...if necessary

congrats!

unfortunately we're unlikely to get any f.b. reports from those who recently ordered this one, not before it's too late anyway.  because you guys won't even get it shipped before this deal expires on the 3rd, by which time the sale will be over. but especially for you, what's the harm in trying?  considering you've bought & returned a couple already, this is as low risk as you can get.

i initially disqualified it for me because as k.h. mentions 24ild over 32ild is its "medium/firm" orientation, & being the firmest option possible it still doesn't sound...

Hi everyone- I wanted to update you on my mattress choice. I decided to go with the SleepEZ 8500 blended talalay. Soft top layer, medium middle, and firm bottom. I decided to go this route after talking to someone at SleepEZ (Shawn, I presume) and trying out an Englander Nature's Finest all natural latex mattress. Although Flobeds seemed to have a slightly better product (labeled latex and unlimited layer exchanges) I couldn't justify the extra $1,000 for their mattress. I am still curious about Essentia, but was a little nervous about purchasing from them since I couldn't find anyone who has tried their mattress. Anyway, thank you for the help. I can't wait for my new mattress. -Michelle...

Hello eagle2!

Well, I just joined this forum after spending many hours reading all of your posts which I am very appreciative of.  Thank you!  I am about to purchase a latex mattress but admit I only started my detailed research in the past few weeks.  I have spoken to both SleepEZ and FloBeds and agree with you that FloBeds might be the best "fit" for us because it appears they are the ones that started the 90 day guaranty process.  Wish they offered free shipping as does SleepEZ but that would not be a deal breaker for us.  Also, it appears as though their mattress cover may be of higher quality.   (How did you like it and did you put another mattress pad on top of it?)But I sure could use your help because from the bit of research I've done, I have received some conflicting info and it seems that you...
