Mccldwll - Costco Sealy "Sedona Springs Ultra Plush" mattress...I'm at my wit's end with mattresses! - Lynn2006

mccldwll, Is the Brylane latex topper natural or blended? Is it Dunlap Processing or Talalay Processing or neither? Does it have a smell? Is it the right size for the bed or a litle bit small like Overstock? I love my Overstock topper but it has ripped in a few spots from moving it to sleep on the floor before I got the bed and from taking it off and on and for it being so thin. It is the perfect softness. What ILD do you think the Brylane Latex Topper is? The sale ends on Feb. 4th. I still think I need a 1.25" topper and 1" is not enough and 2" is too much for me....

Congrats on successful surgery. Just a thought on the 1/4" visco. They could be using it not for it's normally associated properties, but because of it's tensile strength, slow recovery, and ability to "imprint" the springs without cutting through. Might want to hang on to it....

Wow, these photos, and your description of the dissection, are fascinating —and shocking. Thanks for posting them.
Makes you realize what a scam the whole mattress industry is. People get sucked into spending $$$ on a "Luxury" latex or visco pillowtop/eurotop mattress, when really all they are getting is a half inch (or less) of "specialty" foam sandwiched together with a few inches of cheap mushy PU foam. There should be a law of disclosure for manufacturers of mattresses, like the list of ingredients on packaged food, so consumers can know what exactly they are paying for (and putting next to their bodies). ...

Besides Gardner Mattress, there is a local mattress manufacturer about 15 minutes from me that said they could make me a full size plush mattress for, if I remember correctly, less than $400. I don't know anything about this manufacturer and the quality of their mattresses, but the rep told me they make mattresses for some hotels. I'm interested in visiting their showroom just to see what kind of mattresses they offer. Shifman mattresses are sold in my area (most of the mattresses are above my price range), and they make an entry level mattress, but it has the bonnell springs...I'd have to add a topper because there's not much padding above the coils. I've read a little about bonnell springs, and I think there was something written about how bonnell springs get firmer with time as they compress more.
I've thought of the possibility of the combination of coils and latex. If I...

Great story. The mattress looked so pretty from the outside before the surgery.
Here's a photo gallery of a "mattress morgue". Sealy isn't the only one that puts junk in mattresses.

Not sure about making you more comfortable but as a former hospital worker who wore latex gloves every day for years and as a breastfeeding consultant who has dealt with a lot of clients with allergy issues - there is a big difference between "sensitivity" and a true allergy. You might have problems if you are already sensitive or allergic. No mattress manufacturer could guarentee you'd have no problems. Kind of like people with peanut allergies - extremely allergic people can't even eat foods that have been exposed to grinders that have been exposed to nuts at some point. People who are sensitive or have milder allergies have to avoid peanuts but don't have to be quite as careful. I am not convinced anyone really knows what causes people to develop sensitivities and allergies in the first place. Lots of theories though.
As I understand it, sensitivties and allergies to latex seem...

Yeah, I saw that page on "the mattress morgue" the other day. This is a good place to post it.
This all makes me realize that even if my springs don't work out, I will either buy a cheap mattress with better springs and take it apart and make my own mattress, or see if there's some local factory where they would sell me just the springs, so I could replace them inside the Sealy cover, and go from there.
I doubt that ANY mattress - or hardly any - would be as good - or as flexible - as I can make it myself, by taking it apart like this and puttiing in my own foam on top of the springs. If these don't work out I'll look for a not-too-used matress or a cheap new one that has better springs. I know that if you dig into web sites or just call...

Okay, now I have a real plan (though obviously it's not finalized - that's the purpose of this thread). Let me know if this sounds reasonable. Remember that I have problems in my shoulders, neck and arms. I think the lower back problems I have had are clearly from the mattress, not the accident. So I want to concentrate on making the mattress soft for my shoulders and arms, and just "normal firm" for my back.
Here's the plan:
1" layer of VERY FIRM HR foam on the bottom right on top of the springs of the Fenway Sealy. (My question here, is: Is 1" best or would 1/2" or 3/4" be enough? Or two x 1/2" layers just in case I want to experiment with just one layer, or two?)
Then I'll buy enough HR foam in various densities to experiment with 2 x 1" layers of HR medium and firm foam...

This mattress was bought at CostCo 4 years ago. Over a year ago it started to give my wife and I back problems but we had been in an accident and did not realize it was the MATTRESS that was at least half or more of the problem - we thought it was just because of the accident. The accident did indeed cause us problems - especially me - but it became clear over the past few months that this mattress (actually 2 twins that we put side by side) was the problem.
So... Today we decided to open up the mattress and see what was inside, and then go down to the foam store where I found out I can buy 1" of HR foam (high resiliency - a very high quality) for $24 in the twin size.
So we opened up the mattress on the top seams on 3...

Lucky that you bought it at CostCo - they will take it back. Tell them you are bringing it back because it's CRAP.
