Congratulations, may I ask if a foundation was included? is it off the floor?  Ikea sells several kind of bed and slats; and according to the bed experts here, type of foundation, slats, etc directly effects the sleep comfort.

Thanks...

I have to agree with mccldwll about pillowtop (especially Simmons) mattresses. Some friends who have one, and every review I have read about them, say that they develop craters where you sleep in no time flat. The warranty on an innerspring mattress is all but worthless: it has to have a 2 inch impression in it before they will even talk to you. By that time your backs will be crippled. Check out Simmons Beautyrest on epinions.com or go to Complaints.org, punch in Simmons and just see how many pages pop up...
I just went through the exhausting and stressful process of buying a mattress, and can tell you it was a lot easier buying a car. If I were to do it again, I would probably build my own latex mattress, but since you live in HI that doesn't seem realistic. We ended up with a firm-ish innerspring mattress...

You should try it without a topper first.  You might like it that way.

I agree.

Personally, I'd avoid memory foam.  Many people must like it as they sell millions of toppers. but it didn't work for me....

Some of us would avoid the S-brand mattresses due to many reports of the cheap polyurethane foams breaking down prematurely resulting in hammocking and discomfort.  That said, there are PU foams which will hold up over time and the Beautyrest Black is Simmons top of the line and may use them.

Get the store to print out the specification sheet on the mattress, see if you can determine the density of the foam used, if it is greater than 2.2pcf you are probably OK.

I encourage any corrections from forum members....

I initially had the mattress temporarily plopped on top of my futon, and all that on top of a futon frame. As expected, it was extremely cushy -- interesting as it felt extremely gooshy (technical term) but not uncomfortably so.

I now have it on its final resting place on IKEA birch slats with adjustable lumbar support, and it is considerably more firm. The slats themselves are on a custom platform that I built myself.

Beyond the slats, I don't believe a foundation would have any effect on the performance or feel of the bed as the mattress is completely supported by these slats....

I thought I'd report back in after a couple weeks of sleep testing -- LOVE my IKEA Latex Mattress!

I just had my housewarming last night, and I've received many many compliments and offers for roommates after my friend had a chance on the bed. Ahem. But yes, it's definitely a keeper! Latex mattresses are brilliant, brilliant!

I've been sleeping without a topper and it's fine. There is a bit of goosh even without a topper and the support is wonderful. Money well spent!...
Need to buy a new mattress - LauraA

HI, I am new to the forum.  Hubby and I bought a Sealy Influence king size mattress a year and a half ago and it was a very firm mattress.  Hubby did not like it.  We have given that mattress set to our 14 year old son.  Two weeks ago, hubby and I went and bought a Select Comfort 5000 king size bed.  I HATE it.  Hubby likes it, doesn't love it but he likes it much better than the Sealy.  The select comfort I feel is a glorified air mattress and it is hurting at the top of my spinal cord along my shoulder area.  I called Select comfort today and they are coming to get it in about a week.   Testing that mattress is costing us about $400.

Now I am in search of a new mattress set.  I went to a Serta store and really didn't like...

Hi Everyone,

I'd like to thank you so much for all the excellent advice I've received.  I checked out a few of the links in this thread.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look as if they ship to Hawaii (and I'm not sure that any mattress company would due to the item's size.)  So with much regret, the only option I have is to purchase a mattress locally.  I know already I won't be able to get the most comfortable bed, but I believe with your assistance, I will get the best sleeping experience I can get!

Are there any recommendations on what kind of mattress I should buy?  I know it isn't "best", but would it be okay to have the top, and just put a latex mattress topper over it?  Out of all of the "S" beds, are there any that are at least decent, as they seem to be the most readily available in Hawaii.  However,...

Hi Everyone,

I'm debating between purchasing one of these two queen sized beds:

Simmons Beautyrest Worldclass Atkins Plush or Serta Perfect Sleeper Harbor Bay Firm

The Simmons has 980 springs and the Serta has 532.  However, the springs are different.  Also, the Simmons doesn't have latex foam, while the Serta one does.

To my husband and I, both feel comfortable.  We would just like to get your opinion on which bed would be a better investment for us in terms of longevity.

Thank you!
