Re: Costco Sealy "Sedona Springs Ultra Plush" mattress...I'm at my wit's end with mattresses! - centralpark

Besides Gardner Mattress, there is a local mattress manufacturer about 15 minutes from me that said they could make me a full size plush mattress for, if I remember correctly, less than $400. I don't know anything about this manufacturer and the quality of their mattresses, but the rep told me they make mattresses for some hotels. I'm interested in visiting their showroom just to see what kind of mattresses they offer. Shifman mattresses are sold in my area (most of the mattresses are above my price range), and they make an entry level mattress, but it has the bonnell springs...I'd have to add a topper because there's not much padding above the coils. I've read a little about bonnell springs, and I think there was something written about how bonnell springs get firmer with time as they compress more.

I've thought of the possibility of the combination of coils and latex. If I...

Sorry you are having such an awful time finding a comfortable mattress. Unfortunately that seems to be a huge problem in this day and age of over-padded mattresses. Your back hurts because all that foam, particularly the low density convoluted PU foam most S-Brand manufacturers use in today's mattresses, just doesn't provide enough back support. To make matters worse it rapidly starts to compress-- the manufacturers call this "imprinting" or "body impressions" rather than sagging, which is what it is--and the mattress becomes even more uncomfortable. The average useful life of a mattress stuffed with PU foam is about three years! Outrageous considering what they cost.

I couldn't agree more with mccldwll. Try to find an old fashion double sided mattress. Avoid pillowtops--they are notorious for quickly hammocking and causing back pain. You mention that you sleep on your stomach at times, so you should stick...

I clicked on the illustrations of the latex mattress with coils, that looks really nice.   But delivery from east to the west of US...

Is the model you purchased on the Gardner web page or is it a custom model just for you?    The only ones with latex on top which they show are the "Ivory Plush Top" and the "Pocket coil".   I tried both of those in the store and liked the plush top best.    I don't think you can go wrong with a Gardner product.

I also bought my last mattress from Gardner Mattress recently and know about their product line.  I ended up with one of their latex mattresses, had to do an exchange, add a layer, etc.   In hindsight, my 2nd choice was the Ivory plush top I believe you are talking about with the latex layer on top.  YES, I would recommend that choice rather than the PU foam model.  Since they custom build each mattress, you could even speak to the owner "Gardner Sisk" (He is usually around the Salem store) and ask for a slightly firmer layer of latex on top.  Be careful though, you don't want it too firm either.

HINT....Gardner might even negotiate with you a little!

Leo3, I'm the guy who bought from Gardner Mattress.   It's an old fashion New England company which still seems to pride itself on making a quality product.   I'm sure there are other similar businesses around the country.   I almost bought their "Ivory Plush" model which is the traditional hand tied spring mattress with a layer of latex on top.  I don't think they use any PU foam.   However, after I did a store test of their 100% latex mattresses, I was sold on latex.  Sometimes I wish I had gone with the spring/latex model since I've had trouble getting the latex firmness where I want it.  I ended up with "too firm" latex from Gardner (after 1 comfort exchange) which I chose to correct by adding a 3 inch "medium" topper from FoamSweetFoam.   Seems fine now,  so far.

Yeh, I guess shipping costs to other areas outside of...

Similar to you, my Gardner Mattress all latex mattress was too firm after I had already done one exchange from their "medium" latex bed.   Since I weigh 260 lbs I decided to top off my too firm mattress with another 3 inches of "medium"--24-28 ILD from FoamSweetFoam.  I went with them for the 100% natural Latex International product which some said was a bit firmer than the blend.   So far I am very happy with my puchase.   It's soft but still quite supportive over the firmer base layers I already had.   I wanted that "plush" feeling without it being too soft and sagging.   I might have been able to get away with only 2 inches but didn't find a source I trusted at the right price.   The FSF price for 3 inch toppers is $400. which includes shipping and a 30 year warranty.   Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Good luck in your search!...

My latex combo mattress finally works for me! - markbnh1
Jan 16, 2010 7:04 AM
Okay, I finally found a combination of latex layers that works for me!   As noted in another post I started out with a "medium" firm sealed latex mattress from a local retailer (Gardner Mattress in Salem, MA)   This was 8 inches of "medium" latex which felt wonderful but caused me to "bottom out" on the foundation it came with.  I'm 5' 10" and about 260 lbs.   I returned it for a "firm" mattress from the same company and received an 8 inch latex mattress what now felt TOO firm but seemed to solve the bottoming out issue.   I kept this mattress and found it okay with a 2 inch memory foam topper, but was still not fully satisfied, since I wanted that plush latex feeling.   I just spent my first night on a 3 inch "medium" topper and LOVE my bed now!    Nice feel, no bottoming out, and the sheets fit perfectly.   ...

Hi Again mark,

yes - it's the Ivory Plush Top!  I do remember you saying that's the one you liked.  Here's a VERY cool link to the exact insides of it.  I do hope it holds up and doesn't get lumpy, even w/the low coil ount - but as you say, anything from them should be very good.
