I'm leaning towards going firmer rather than softer. Especially since I'm on the heavier end of the scale and I really want some decent support.
As far as memory foam goes, I really would like something more "natural", especially since I have a young son that often ends up in bed with us. (Even though we have the pillows.) As well, even though my partner likes the feel of memory foam, he really likes the durability of latex. (As in, not having to go through this process again soon).
Oddly enough, the hardest part for me is trying to decide which company to go with, not the idea of a kit itself. Well that, and how to configure the layers. I am going to be importing this bed into Canada, so I really, really, really don't want to do more than one exchange. Luckily, I live about...

I did a little research around the forums as suggested, as well as some research around the internet. I also went shopping (twice) for a mattress type I felt was most comfortable at sleepy's and better bedding. It came down to either memory foam, or latex, more specifically a sealy full latex, tempur-pedic, or comforpedic. And although the sealy and comforpedic were indeed quite comfortable, I get this gut feeling I wouldn't like it after sleeping on it because it's simply too comfortable, if that makes sense... The tempurpedics (rhapsody and deluxe) were nice the way they comformed to my body, but they seemed just a bit too firm, and the tempurature in the summer thing is probably my biggest turn-off. I already have a hard enough time as it is sleeping in the summer heat. Also it seems a lot of...

You might also develop somewhat of a dip or softer spot in the middle if you do this. Not sure if that will be an issue for you.
Replacing the convoluted topper with 1-2" of memory foam would help with the motion transfer as well. Flobeds will probably let you try a pieces of Sensus memory foam, if you want to go that route. What was your problem with the TP Deluxe?
It could be that latex won't work the best for you if motion transfer is a big convern. I would wait to...

You make excellent points and I am convinced the kit is the way to go... my wife will come around I believe.
Her apprehension towards a kit "stacker" mattress is actually my fault. You see, a couple of years ago when our hand-me-down Simmons became unusable I got the idea (from the internet) to fashion my own "cheaperpedic" DIY mattress and did so using layers of HD36, LUX, and memory foam.
Though it has always slept hot, it was ok for a while and has degraded to an unbearable level in the last year, so chalk one up in the "fail" column for my DIY attempt.
She understandably has kind of a "oh no... not another piece together mattress" attitude.
Flobeds keeps getting mentioned and they look to have an excellent product....

My spouse and I prefer a firm feel. Because the ordered bed was a Split King, I was able to order the SuperFirm, over ExtraFirm, over Firm, with the latex topper. My spouse ordered ExtraFirm, over Firm, over Medium with the latex topper. (The Flobed website does have the SuperFirm / Natural Latex as an option but they do have it in stock).

Dewey says he thinks swapping the M for a SF on the bottom will take care of the motion transfer issues, but I'm not yet convinced and am looking for radical solutions. Since memory foam seems to do especially well at soaking up motion (in our limited - painful - experience with a tempur-pedic deluxe),...
