Thanks for the feedback.
Yes I know it is true that you get the best mattress usually for more money, but I don't think you always get the best springs for more money... That is, you can buy a very expensive Simmons, for example, but it's still going to have crappy springs. And I am guessing that you can buy a low end mattress from any of the S brands that probably has the same springs as a higher end mattress that they 've added a bunch of crappy foam to.

Kait,, by "old timer" I meant someone who has been here on this forum for awhile, not someone who's been here on the planet a long while...

My wife has been saying all along that we need springs with foam, but I was a believer in pure foam... but now I think I have finally come full circle...

Not unusual at all.  Good luck on the warranty thing.  Chances are they won't but you can try.
You can cut open the pillowtop and do your own cushy stuff inside.  Don't waste your money adding toppers because they only make things worse.

I think you guys are right.  I won't get anything for it.  I will never never never get pillowtop again....

The problem is that the cheap PU foam most mattress companies use as filler in their mattresses breaks down relatively quickly. The "S" name companies are notoriously guilty of this practice. Anything with "pillow top" or "plush" in the description is likely to give you problems. If you really want to go with a major name mattress maker, get the model with the least amount of foam in it, usually a "firm" mattress, and purchase a topper(s) to make it comfy. When the topper(s) breaks down, it's easy to replace and far less expensive than having to buy a new mattress....

Thanks for the reply.  Thats good advice and I really appreciate it.  Seems like picking a firm mattress is easier than choosing a plush or pillow top anyway.

So which of the major mattress manufacturers do you think has the best mattress?

And what alternative mattress makers do you recommend besides the 'S' makers?...

Hello all, there is a dealer around here called Mattress Firm that I have been checking out for a new mattress.  They offer a 90 day comfort guarantee and have Sealy and Simmons mattresses.  I am looking for a 'plush' mattress and have narrowed it down to the following

Sealy Posturepedic Seaview Pines Plush--Queen listed at 899
Sealy Posturepedic English Arbour Plush--Queen listed at 1099
Simmons Beautyrest Lilac Plush--Queen listed at 699

Has anyone dealt with this company before?  If so how was your experience?

I know that these 3 mattresses probably have about 20 different names from different retailers, but I am going to assume that they are all the same in the 'plush' category in this price range from these manufacturers.

Is this a safe price range to shop in?  These are the prices listed on the site http://www.mattressfirm.com/Mattresses.aspx

What kind of price can I expect to negotiate...

Thank you SO MUCH for your reply.

I just saw that your are in Cypress, TX...me too! We might shop at the same Bed, Bath and Beyond :) (I'm in there on a regular basis).

You actually have confirmed my gut feeling on the Serta, not to mention my husband doesn't really want to buy from this same particular place we bought the Simmons from.

The Tempurpedic is pretty tempting too. Gosh it is totally ridiculous that it is this hard to find a good bed that will last and give you comfort, not to mention the outrageous cost of it all. I have to wonder what is everyone sleeping on and how are they comfortable? All of our friends are like "what's the big deal? Just go buy a new bed!" Ugh!

I will discuss the Flobeds option with him some more tonight. It seems like we have really reached the point...

Serta Serenity Latex vs Tempurpedic vs Flobeds - nightnight

I have been reading this forum the past few weeks trying to gather information to purchase a new bed since our 2 year old Simmons Beautyrest has been killing our backs for about a year now. Same story with sagging that you've all heard before. So like most of you, I am gun-shy to make another expensive purchase to end up in the same boat again. Right now our options are:

Floor model Tempurpedic Bellafina-good price, no returns. That scares me since we've never had a foam mattress before and may not like it. I have several friends along with my sister who all love theirs but of course everyone is different.

Serta Serenity Latex bed- can get pretty decent price on this one. It is described as 4" latex, 2.5" memory foam, convaluted foam and soy based PU. It has a 30 year warranty for even a 5/8" dip or sag...

Purchase sealy posturepedic king mattress 5 years ago. After about 2 years I had warranty problems. Large hill in center of mattress. Mattress firm said they would inspect my matterss for $60.00 .lso gave me a 10 page form to fill out. Every questiion was designed to proCosttect them. I suggest fyou fine another source for your mattress. My experience has been very negative. I am going to\ purchase from Costco sleep science celeste 14" on sale3 in september. .....
