Alex: Saying that you would allow a thief, after breaking into your house, to steal your wife rather than your mattress is a pretty graphic statement. But I'll take you at your word.
I thought after all of the detailed information about Sealy and Stearns and Foster mattresses that you must work for them. I am surprised to learn that you're actually sleeping on a competitors mattress. What kind of work do you actually do.You seem to be quite knowledgeable about mattresses, let me ask you your opinion about foundations for latex mattresses.
I have actually started a new thread on this subject with more explanation than I will give here.
What is your opinion about the necessity for a ventilated foundation for a latex mattress. I ask this because I have a good foundation but it does not have ventilation as it is for a water bed....

I'm sorry but this is untrue once you get into a manufacturer's signature spring. The Posturepedic coil is made by Sealy in Sealy plants that employ Sealy workers. The Individually Pocketed Coil is made by Simmons in Simmons plants that employ Simmons workers. The same is true with Stearns and Foster.
Whether or not you get cheap PU foam is dependant on whether you pay for cheap PU foam.
Hi Alexander, it seems you have worked in the mattress industry. Is that correct?
You seem to know a lot about mattresses! It's good to have someone who knows things about manufacturing here.
I admit to exaggerating in my statement about coils. I
should have said "
MOST are made with springs from one manufacturer and cheap pu foam". So thanks for keeping me honest!
But you must admit it is hard to know...

Which mattress should I buy?
My "mattress resume'" is printed below following the bulk of this message. I feel pretty qualified to give this advice, but of course, take it with a grain of salt. This is just my opinion, in the end. But it is based on many other people's experiences as well as my own,and it gives you some info that you can use to make your own decision.
This is surely not "DEFINITIVE" and I hope others who've been here on this forum awhile and experimented with foams and mattress springs will add their 2 cents. But I write this because I sincerely believe it will help the average mattress buyer.
SO HERE IS MY RECOMMENDATION TO MATTRESS BUYERS:
1) Buy the kind...

Should have listened to you... after we went to the Marshall showroom we tried a latex at another place. We like the feel and softness and bought into the "Latex doesn't get hot" opinions expressed all over the web. Perhaps Latex doesn't get as hot as memory foam but we lasted one night on our 8" latex mattress and both woke up (what little we slept) with two words...Hot & Hard. The hard we could fix but the hot..... We are returning it and going back to the pocket coil drawing board. Too bad Marshall isn't making the kind of bed we got... tight top Tudor Delux Lux Comfort at a fair price. We paid $800 in 92. Now they want almost $2000 for a similiar bed. Any recommendations for a good pocket coil other than Marshall? Sounds like Simmons is garbage... Any help appreciated as we continue to sleep...

I currently sleep on a Simmons Black pillowtop called a Rosalyn.
The Blacks have individually pocketed triple braided coils (each coil is actually three smalled braided coils) with a net gauge of 11.75. The pillowtop is composed of 3" of Talalay Latex covered in cashmere and alpaca loft for cool summer sleeping. It's surrounded by a high density 3" foam encasing. It is insanely heavy.
If you broke into my house I would let you take my wife before I'd let you take my bed.

This US-Mattress website has a handy reference to the components of the Sealy/Simmons/Serta latex mattresses. Of course you have to figure out which mattress compares to the one you are looking at as they are all branded under different names. It looks like the one you looked at might be the Sealy Posturepedic SpringFree Latex Garden Vine Plush on this chart:
US-Mattress is offering this mattress for $1,259 for a Queen and $1,511 for a King, so no, you're not getting a special deal.
FYI, according to Sealy, "SuperSoft SealyFoam" is high density polyurethane foam.

We have had two mattresses in eight years - the first was a Stearns & Foster and the second was made for Storehouse by Carolina Mattress Guild. The first one got a bit lumpy, and the second one has left us with sagging sides, person-sized dents, and a nice hump in the middle of the mattress. Awesome.

We almost made the mistake of buying the same thing again (a pillowtop Simmons beautyrest) but fortunately I read epinions and then stumbled upon this site. Thank you for all of the great info! I've read through a lot of posts about mattress surgery and building your own mattress, and I'm interested in both of those ideas. I have no idea what kind of springs I'll encounter once we get up the courage to operate, so I want to be prepared to quickly move on building our own if...

Some Good Questions About Mattresses with Answers - Alexander

Jim asked some good questions in another thread. Instead of Hijacking that thread I've decided to start a new one for the answers and discussion. Here's some of the questions regarding modern mattresses answered:
1) Is Stearns and Foster not owned by Sealy?
They are in fact. They do not, however, use the same coil systems, same foam systems, or the same construction. You are either certified to work on Stearns and Foster OR Sealy. You never make both. Other than the fact that they are often made within 100 yards of eachother and your money goes to the same company, they have virtually nothing in common from a feel or construction standpoint.
2) So you are saying that S&F and Sealy make their own coils, they are not manufactured by L&P?
The short answer is no, L&P does not make Sealy or Stearn's coil. The long...

They're all made with springs from one manufacturer and cheap pu foam, so the main difference is the type of springs as per above. Bonnell? Luriflex? Leggett and Platt.
