I don't believe that carbon is a form of tempering. Tempering is when you heat the wire up to about 450 degrees through an oven or electric shocks. Once this is done, you have less of a set in the coil. Pocket coils can be tempered electrically before they are put into the pocket. The last I had heard Simmons did not use this procedure to manufacture their pocketed coil. In defense though, they will put a larger coil into the pocket and compress it down, so that over time it will not show much of a set, however, it will start to get softer. I don't know if it is still true but back in the old days, Simmons used a higher carbon wire then their competeitors because they did not heat treat....

Are you saying that even though Sealy and Stearns & Foster are made in the same plant, they are not by the same people? Quilting?

Are you saying that Stearns and Fosters pocketed coil is an offset coil?

Are you saying that Simmons is no longer gluing their pocketed coil and instead are sewing them?

I believe that if this what you are saying that it is incorrect. Can anyone from Sealy or Simmons respond?...

The additional carbon content is called "carbon tempering" or "high carbon tempered".

Hello Maars,

Lady Americana is a regional brand owned by the Mathis Brothers company. They approached me some years ago about carrying their product in my shop. The coils they use are one of two kinds - Bonnell or Marshal. Bonnell coils are great for spare bedrooms, kid's bedrooms, or short-term solutions but not suitable, in most cases, for two adults every night for ten years. Especially two heavier adults. If you're spending enough to get into the portion of their line that uses the Marshal coil, there are two major manufacturers I've had positive experience with that use the coil or a variation - Simmons or Stearns and Foster Core.

Regarding double pillowtops, you have to do some backpacking to find them now but they do exist. The industry as a whole moved away from them around 2005. All in all, it was a positive move. The double pillowtop (or double-sided...

Fubu,

The specific model names are going to vary based on retailer. Simmons only makes a few versions of their World Class beds. however, so you're more or less fine comparison any two mattresses so long as they say "World Class" they will be relatively close.

Pricing is harder to to judge. I can tell you that for where I live (Midwest) $1200 is reasonable for a Full or Queen size World Class Simmons. On the east or west coasts this would be an exceptional deal. Fulls and Queens are generally the same price in most spring mattreses. Keep in mind that a Full is the same length as a Twin and if you or your partner is over about 5'10" the bed will be too small for you. Having so much as a toe hanging over the edge of your bed is horrific for your back.

So far as the specific bed goes, Simmons...

Alright I've concluded my experiment.

I called three local mattress stores around town that all carried Sealy products. I posed as a mattress shopper and told them I was interested in a Sealy Posturepedic Signature series bed. I  asked them the following questions:

- What type of coil is in the mattress and can you describe it to me?

- What is the gauge of the coil?

- What types of foams are in the mattress?

- What kind of ticking is in the mattress?

Every single one of places I called gave me the correct information to these four questions. One guy had to ask another salesman for the gauge of the coil. This information is enough for 99% of the consumer world to make a buying decision. Just for Jim though I asked the following followups

-Can you tell me the exact thickness of each layer of foam?

-Can you tell me the ILDs of the...

I am interested in purchasing a Simmons world class plush firm Paris mattress from sleep train. I was doing my research online about it and came across people saying that the spring Simmons use aren't tempered. Is this true? If so, should I be concerned? I would like to know how this would affect the life and quality of the mattress. Thanks for any feedback. ...

I am interested in a Simmons World Class Paris mattress from Sleep Train.  I am still doing comparison shopping and I am wondering what other names does this model go by.  Also the salesperson quoted me a price of $1200 for a full size plush firm.  Please let know if this is a good price and any other feedback would be appreciated.  Thanks....
