latex mattress options - looking for advice - iowa_baby

I’ve been reading and researching mattress purchases and have found this Forum to be extremely helpful. The more I read, however, the less certain I get. We have a 16-year-old King Koil queen innerspring mattress on a solid platform bed. Within the last year or so I have been less and less comfortable on it. I feel like I can feel the springs, although nothing seems broken. No depressions, lumps or anything like that. It’s all muscular, but I wake up achy. . My husband was also uncomfortable but last year we got a wool topper and he is now content. He is willing to buy a new mattress to improve my comfort, however, so I started my research. I quickly decided I wanted a latex bed. No memory foam as I have the pillow and find it...

We looked at the S&F Oasis line too. It is pretty much the same as the Sealy SpringFree line. S&F is Sealy's high end brand. The latex in both is Sealy's newish all synthetic Talalay latex that doesn't have a lot of track record. The Oasis/SpringFree mattresses use the same basic latex core with different amounts of "stuff" on top of them. If you liked that mattress, chances are that you would like the FloBeds (or similar) mattress. The beauty of kit beds is that you can choose your firmness, customize each side, etc, And they don't use Fire Retardant chemicals which some people feel might be carcinogenic.
In a way, a kit bed is easier to deal with than a big traditional mattress - especially a heavy latex mattress. It is in smaller, manageable pieces. Getting the first layer in can be a little tricky but once that's in...

Not sure about making you more comfortable but as a former hospital worker who wore latex gloves every day for years and as a breastfeeding consultant who has dealt with a lot of clients with allergy issues - there is a big difference between "sensitivity" and a true allergy. You might have problems if you are already sensitive or allergic. No mattress manufacturer could guarentee you'd have no problems. Kind of like people with peanut allergies - extremely allergic people can't even eat foods that have been exposed to grinders that have been exposed to nuts at some point. People who are sensitive or have milder allergies have to avoid peanuts but don't have to be quite as careful. I am not convinced anyone really knows what causes people to develop sensitivities and allergies in the first place. Lots of theories though.
As I understand it, sensitivties and allergies to latex seem...

Have you looked at Sealy's Spring Free line? They sell all synthetic latex mattresses with different options for toppers. Stearns & Foster makes the same beds with fancier covers and higher price tags. The big question is the lifespan of the all synthetic latex. It has only been out a couple of years.
You might want to stick with a firm mattress top with no attached topper rather than a Euro/Pillow/Plush top. You can add a removable topper if you think you need one.

well I got my mattress salesman to do some actual work for me on this one. After calling S/F myself (I know I asked about Sealy but same thing) S/F wouldn't give me any specifications at all. My mattress guy was able to get some from his contacts. He tells me that the core is an ILD of 38 and the "flawless foam" which on the Sealy I think is called the "supersoft sealy foam" is a 28 ILD. Nothing more. And that the core is in fact all latex, no other materials besides latex (albeit the synthetic latex) in there. So now I'm just left wondering if the amounts of non-latex materials is too much to compromise the quality and longevity of the mattress. And by longevity I mean 5-8 yrs would make me happy.
Any comments on this information?...

here is the list of contents according to one website that carries the mattress. I'm trying to make sure that the core of this matress is actually all latex, not just some latex. I realize that there are some layers (comfort layers) that are pu foam, and if I click on it it claims to be high density foam, any comments on that?)

i guess the problem for me was when I performed the search function there were too many *irrelevant* posts that came back. Not to be a newbie and start off complaining about the search function. However, I was able to more easily just read through the posts by page, after all there are only 6 pages of posts in the last 6 months......
Anyways, I think I have found the direction I want to go in, and that is latex. I really like what savvy rest had to offer but I *believe* I can get something very similar in the S/F Oasis or Sealy Springfree (and for a lower price). While they are not adjustable post purchase, they do offer several levels of firm to plush choice, and I think I will be able to find one that we both can be happy on. I believe that I am one of...

I had this same mattress delivered 2 weeks ago and was excited beyond words. I had a sore back and hip from a 20 year old rock hard mattress and it slowly helped alleviate most of that pain. It sunk so much around my shoulders I had to adjust the height of my pillow to one half as thick to avoid a neck ache. This mattress is VERY soft and does not feel supportive. It's great for pressure points but not for a sense of firmness. It squishes down when you sit on it if you like to sit in bed and read--a bit uncomfortable. With all the latex, I thought it would be firmer. I'm reluctantly turning mine back in and getting a sealy springfree plush without the box top. Hopefully it will be the best of comfort and firmness....

I tried one of these mattresses out today and it was very comfortable. I am trying to decide between this and one of the online kits....
