Re: Hammocking better with 2 twins on one frame than a King ?? - DianeK

I have also been told that and it makes sense.  There's just more opportunity for the coils in the middle of a king to have less support than those along the edge.  I was also advised if I was going to go to 2 twins to be prepared for the 2 twins to feel firmer than the identical model in a king.  This also makes sense due to the fact that there is a greater proportion of edge support to inner coils in a twin than in a king and this results in a firmer mattress.  So keep that in mind if you are out testing floor models in the king size.  Now this is in regards to spring mattresses - I'm not sure if the same would hold true with 100% latex.  There is no edge support in something like a Flobed latex mattress and if you have the latex on...

I'm about to talk about some of the highest quality brands i've found.
Pros:  Hastens seems to have excellent stuffing some of the best I've seen.   Cons:   But I question the springs spacing and quality plus the fact that they are not honeycombed pockets so they can move around  over time That being said for all i know they may be the best.  Pros: Vi spring seems to have good springs on first impressions from there website.  I am going to lay on them in the next week   Cons:   But they seemed to have watered down there horsehair with other materials mohair,  wool...

ex..  this is off there website

"1,200 gsm of hand-teased loose long-stranded black horsehair, lambswool"

but they don't say how much is actually horsehair and how much is actually lambswool

and lambswool is dirtcheap compared to horsehair.   and in the vispring video you can...

im not saying that they cannot be better than other mass produced springs but it is literally impossible to mass produce a pocket coil in the actual proper design.  there are always gaps between the coils and there are two ways to prevent shifting , you have to hand tie the springs together in the middle rather than using glues to hold the pockets together, however hand tieing is the only way to completely eliminate this.  I was also just looking at a Vi-Spring in person, and they do a honeycomb nested pocket coil...it was quite special to see because it does not look like a normal pocketed spring whatsoever, there is literally NO gap between the coils, pretty impressive.  They are starting around 4k for a queen set....but holy moly was it ever comfortable, probably wont hold its shape as well as an all latex build because there is...

There are good coil mattresses, although they will be much more costly than a normal coil mattress, brands that build them well:

Hastens, Vi-Spring, Hypnos, Green Sleep, Carpe Diem, Royal Pedic, Mc Roskey, Shifman, and I know there are others just not coming to my mind at the moment.

Re: Good reasons to avoid memory foam products - budgy

Believe it or not...its actually probably the most cost effective way to do so.  The alternative is to get something like a Vi-Spring or a Hastens which will be a lot more money.  Or you could do somelike like an all natural futon....still not going to be truly cheap, probably as much or more than a regular pillowtop mattress, and arguably not the most comfortable for most people.

Re: $44,000 Kluft Beyond Luxury - budgy

they spent an awful lot of time talking about it being American made, and yet on the Kluft website it says 'made in England'. EDIT: Never mind that might have just been for the coils themselves.

that mattress is ridiculously expensive for what it is, the champs of that uber high end mattress market are still Vi-Spring and Hastens.....and they probably make mattresses that are significantly better than this for half the price. however what is even more ludicrous than that is the Magniflex Platinum on the other link....I realize they are doing some pretty different things with memory foam....but $90,000 for a memory foam product?  High way robbery.

Re: Why is there infinite trouble selecting a mattress for person with low back pain? - budgy

To my knowledge there are no Shifman dealers in my area, so I honestly have never seen one in person (even at furniture shows).  I just looked up that mattress @ bloomingdales website.  Based on that price it sounds a little bit high for what it is.  Looks to be a quality constructed set and their boxsprings sound highly functional, its more of an actual functional sleep system as opposed to just buying a mattress, this is generally something that tends to seperate this company from more standard brands.  I think if you get a chance to lay on one in person and like the way it feels you probably won't have any quality issues persay, but I am a little worried about the battle tank offset coil they use.  Probably perfect for a heavier person, but limited in how well it can conform to body shape compared to say...

Horsehair isn't meant to be super soft.  It is used in place of cotton batting because it releases moisture much more efficiently and is springier and more resilient.  Because it easily releases moisture into the environment apparently horsehair does not maintain the level of moisture required for dust mites to live in it.  The stuff that Hastens uses basically is only the hair taken from the mane and the tails, they don't use the rest of the horsehair as it is lacking the same ability to deal with with the moisture.   I can definitely understand people being weirded out by the thought of sleeping on it, but yet look at basically any good quality latex bed and they are all quilted with wool , is one of these animals dirtier than the other?  I personally really do not see horsehair as being a gimmick, is it really expensive? Heck yes. ...
Re: Platform Bed Best Matress Type - budgy
Dec 22, 2009 8:22 PM
in reality just about every single box spring today is completely solid and non compliance just like a platform bed.  just keep in mind that some open space between slats is sometimes desirable to improve airflow.

anyway, here are a list of mattress manufacturers that actually make FUNCTIONAL box springs (more so than just open slat type base which would be used by most reputable latex sellers) and will feel different without a base.

Greensleep
Hypnos
Hastens
Vi-Spring
Royal-Pedic

and other possibles would be Duxiana, McRoskey's.

other than these companies I can pretty much guarantee any mattress will be fine for the platform bed so long as it does not go over the weight limit of the platform, you will however likely lose all or part of your manufacturers warranty....although you may find that this may not matter anyway, just thought I would mention it though....
