It is interesting that they don't tell you what is in it on their website.  That is the first warning sign.   I would not assume that since they use the word latex, that all of the foam is latex.   Most likely it has a little latex and a bunch of other cheap polyurethene foam.

As a general rule, a softer mattress (i.e. pillowtop) will sleep warmer because you sink in more and are more surrounded by the mattress material.   Memory foam and PU foam will also be warmer than traditional materials like cotton and wool.  Latex will generally be cooler than memory foam and PU foam, but if soft enough, it still can sleep warm.  Most people do not get overally hot on a firm latex mattress, but of course there are always some exceptions.

If you ask the salesman at the store you may or...

All I can tell you is I love my Tempurpedic Cloud (not Supreme, not Luxe) mattress.  This after trying a Select Sleep (local maker) for 3 weeks, an entry level Stearns and Foster (4 weeks), an iComfort memory foam (4 weeks, too soft) and a layered all latex for 4 weeks.  The Tempurpedic is very supportive.  There is no way the foundation could possibly sag one fraction of inch, and I've seen other new box springs sag a good 1/4 to 1/2 inch within weeks (ahem, Serta icomfort box spring) ..   Seriously, this happened because of the Serta foundation design.  If your foundation sags, your mattress will sag guaranteed.  Also the Tempurpedic is very, very comfortable, doesn't sleep hot.  Only downside, there has been a slight odor.  I don't notice it anymore at 60 days....

1)  Original poster - are you using a comforter as a top layer?   If so, shelve it.  Go get a thin quilt instead.  Quilts are typically about a 1/4" thick or so.  They work well and are much cooler.

2) Not sure why you guys just don't want memory foam.   Sleeping too warm is a complete non-issue on my 60 day old TP Cloud.  In September, there were a bunch of nights where room was 80 F.  It was a little warm, but I did ok.  If the room is 65 F to high 70's, it's still great.  They have single or dual air flow 'systems' which seem to work fine for me.   TP Cloud is best mattress for me in 5 mattresses I had in house this year (Select Sleep, Stearns and Foster, iComfort, SleepEZ and now TP).

We recently replaced a serta king size pillow top, with a stearns and foster pillow top... we only bought the s&f mattress and used the box springs from the serta.. why? because the serta was only about 10 months old (give or take.. maybe a year).  The sales guy said box springs are box springs. as long as they are not damaged - any box springs would be the same as the next.. is that true?

I know the serta mattress weighs about 50 lbs, where the s&f weighs about 150 lbs.  Just wondering if investing in the s&f box springs is worth it?

The typical box springs vary a little bit.

Most 'S' brands seem to use Leggett and Platt innards, their 'semi-flex'...

"I've just paid a small fortune for a mattress -- why do I now have to try to "fix" it??"

That seems to be the question of the day here, and it's what drove me in desperation to find this forum. All of us who haven't mattress shopped in many years certainly were in for some shocks. I too was seduced by a Stearns & Foster pillowtop, but soon realized it had to go.

I also did not want memory foam due to the heat complaints I read, and didn't want to order a latex topper without having the chance to try it out beforehand. I got my answer on this forum and that was to buy a firm, non-pillowtop mattress and soften it with toppers. I had to try a few combinations but finally got a bed I now adore. Yes, I was kind of...

If you already agreed to buy the bed "As is" with no returns or warranty of any kind (is that written somewhere on your sales slip?) then I doubt S&F will do anything for you. And yes, that number requested is not easy to find, as I realized when attempting to register my bed before I sent it back.

Best mattress for heavy man...? - toaster
Nov 6, 2011 2:09 PM
Since people here are "in the know" - I'm curious what mattress would you nice folks recommend for a big heavy guy... I'm about 6 ft and 375 pounds (no jokes please).   So yeah, I know I'm a fatty.  I've had back issues since I was a kid, having curvature of my spine - and I live with back pain every day.

I know some people love memory foam beds like tempurpedic, I've heard lots of negatives especially for heavy people, like heat, sinking in so far its hard to climb out in the morning, and simply not being able to hold up the weight of a man my size.

We had a serta pillow top, junk. replaced it within a year of purchase because it was just plain bad.... probably a better bed for someone more in the normal...

Anyone know what's INSIDE the PILLOW TOP on Stearns and Foster? - Boopboopadoop

Hi,

I've already started another thread here about sleeping too hot on new Stearns and Foster Latex "Governor's Palace" pillowtop.

It spells out my whole, painful saga about our new mattress purchase (not even sure I like the mattress in general or the "pushback" feeling, but
the warmth --it instantly retains body heat --is the most problematic aspect).

Now, in my quest for clarity (which, in the mattress-buying world, may be impossible), I am trying to figure out if the pillowtop itself may be adding to my woes.

Anyone know what materials that particular model pillowtop is constructed with?  The mattress is Latex -- supposedly cool, but it is not -- it is way too warm for me.

Asking the salespeople at the store is useless.  But you knew that.

Help, please!

Thanks again.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my original posting (sorry, I didn't see the comments until now...was expecting some type of email alert).

I appreciate all the helpful tips.  Believe me, I'm already careful about bedding, comforters, etc.  That's a given...which is why I rarely sleep with more than a sheet and thin blanket.

Have not yet tried a "cooling" mattress cover, but that is next.  However, I have read mixed reviews on those.

I'm into Week #2 with the new Stearns and Foster bed, and I still intensely dislike it.  I don't find it particularly comfortable and the heat issue is significant.

(Today, I had smaller box springs delivered, with lowered the height of the bed slightly).

The most disturbing thing is that there doesn't seem to be a "regular" mattress even available anymore these days.  By that, I...

I need a COOLER mattress (help, please!!) - Boopboopadoop

I recently had to replace an ancient (25 year old) mattress, and I've been in Mattress Buying Hell ever since (the old mattress was getting tired and lumpy, for sure, but I found it perfectly comfortable.  My boyfriend, however, hated it.  Hence the ensuing drama...).

I've done a ton of research and a ton of shopping.  Bottom line, I am now convinced that the right mattress for me no longer exists.  Because the new mattresses seem fraught with problems that never existed before.

In short: we needed a soft-ish mattress that is not too high and that sleeps cool.  Memory Foam was out, of course.  After practically breaking up in the mattress store, and coming to a complete impasse, my boyfriend and I finally settled on a (pricey) Stearns and Foster Pillow Top -- the one with Latex.

Since the mattress got delivered, I've...
