Well, that's the point of using pocketed coils -- to have them conform to your body -- isn't it? But without the feeling of being beaten by a roll of quarters, I'd hope. (Great analogy, by the way. The pocket coils in my low-end Simmons mattress are 13 gauge, and they might be a tad too sturdy for me 'cause I'm such a lightweight.)

I'd expect the coil pockets (not the coils themselves, but the fabric pockets) to be connected to each other in some fashion, so they shouldn't be completely loose. I'm guessing that the "foam encasing" refers to a foam border around the whole mattress, not around each coil.

It's not just the pillowtop, as I purchased the plush top, within one year we are having sagging in the center of our queen size bed, a major crater in the middle, that you have to climb out of in the morning. Checking for all my information I will need to file a warranty claim and I see it was manufactured in May 2011.  If I get some satisfaction on the claim, should I push for another Simmons model, or am I just going to get stuck with another one just like this that lasts a year or less?  My last mattress came from one of those cheap local outlets ($300 for the set) and was better than this after  6 years.

This is typical in my experience and many on this forum....for the cheap poly foam to feel good...

"Box springs" typically refers to the foundation unit below the mattress unit, yes?

Being a Simmons, perhaps your mattress has individual coil springs?  I personally do not like these and wonder if it would be troublesome covering them with Latex.  But I suppose you can expect to replace existing foam with better foam.

Talalay Latex comfort layers range 1", 2", 3" and 6", and 19-32 ILD.

If you put 4-6" of foam on the existing 7.5 springs, you won't be reducing your mattress height, yes?

Be sure you know what has failed... the existing foam... the springs... or the box spring foundation below it all, if there is one.  Surgery can only fix the top comfort layers.

Yes, I agree that the intent of individual coils is to contour to the body, but there is more to consider than just their profile response.

Specifically, how the body's weight is distributed (pressure relief) across the coils, and in particular, across neighboring coils when some coils are carrying much heavier bearing points like shoulders and hips or butts than that of their immediate neighbor coils.  How well your body weight is distributed across the individual coils...

My girlfriend and I have been shopping for a mattress at Macy's. We liked the Sealy posturepedic cross creek firm queen size and it felt great on our backs. The total cost of the mattress + Box spring + delivery + tax would be $889. Does anyone own this mattress? I have read a lot of reviews about other posturepedic mattresses sinking in the middle within the first months. Will that happen with this particular one? It seems like a decent mattress. We are very nervous about coughing up this cash for something that is going to fail very quick and continue to hurt our backs. I would greately appreciate any advice. We have until September 8th when the Labor Day sales end to make the purchase.

I've read all your response with great interest, and it seems finding a complete mattress system versus a solid basic mattress followed by a topper is the way to go.  Though to me it seems it could be cheaper and better to buy a sturdy, baseline, and well built mattress without all the bells and whistles and throw a good latex topper on it.  But at this point, I'm willing to follow advice.

However, to be honest, laying on mattresses in stores has always been hit or miss for me.  At first, they all feel good.  I did research this mattress (as previously detailed) and when I laid on it at first it felt awesome.  As it did for quite some time.  In fact, my mattress feels good at first now, but i just wake up sore and twisted.

So, what I think I need to understand is (and...

Full mattress that is 51" wide instead of 53" - mattresssize
Sep 6, 2012 7:45 PM
A retailer delivered a mattress to me today that doesn't meet the manufacturer specifications nor the retailer's website dimensions of 54".  The Simmons website (as well as most others) state that a full mattress is 53" wide.  It quotes the industry as stating the manufacturing tolerances can be 1/2".  The bed they delivered to me is 51".  How can I fight this?

Gutting a Beautyrest Black mattress - help with latex surgery - plasma411

Hi all,

After a short 5 years, our Simmons Beautyrest Black Exquisite mattress has large sag spots where my wife & I sleep.  We've looked at new Latex Bliss mattresses and like them alot, then I came across the posts on Mattress Surgery and became curious.

The bed is basically a 12" mattress with about a 4.5" firm pillow top sewn on.  It's a real problem trying to find deep pocket sheets to fit!  After cutting a couple of inspection holes, it looks like the mattress is (from the bottom up), 7.5" of mattress springs, 2" of foam, 1" of foam, 1/2" of some cloth/mesh material.  The topper is foam with some latex in it.

We really like the feel of the Latex Bliss Entice (3.0 Hybrid) & Beautiful (Natural) mattresses and...
