So, i recently purchased an older (second hand) sealy posturepedic "firm" mattress. I intentionally bought a second hand one because I am using it on a lofted (aka really high, I can stand under it) platform bed and wanted my mattress to not be too thick, so it wouldn't create a problem with ceiling clearance when i set up. This mattress i bought is in good condition. The only problem is that when i was testing it out, it felt ok, but now that i've gotten it home it feels.. well.. too firm. It has not been used often, and I can't feel the springs, so it's still in relatively good shape (besides apparently being too firm for me.)

I'm a side sleeper, and i've been having a lot of weird symptoms lately - numbness in my hands and feet (peripheral...

I think you might be missing the point of pillowtops being "bad".  They feel great, and are wonderful to make a mattress soft enough to sleep on.  The problem is that they are built into the mattress, and unless you do surgery, cannot be removed.  Foam wears out before springs do, which is why they are "bad".  If they lasted a long time, then they'd be great!!  My favorite mattress was a pillowtop, but inside of three months there was a crater where I slept...but those three months were fantastic.  Slept like a baby.
So, assuming your mattress is firm because it is basically springs with little padding on top, you make your own comfort layers to your specs on top and you have a pillowtop that can be replaced/tweaked as you desire, without having to replace the entire mattress(costly endeavor, not to mention a PITA).  The trick is to...

I believe Savvy Rest is a good company. But you might also want to consider, SleepEZ, FloBeds, and Habitat. Foam Sweet Foam also has some good prices but I do not care for their exchange policy or their return policy. Those are just a few of the alternatives that I can think of to recommend.

You were aware that Simmons had taken bankruptcy? I have no idea what their reorganization company will be like, are really very much about the deal at all, other than I had read they had taken bankruptcy....

I often wake in the morning with lower back and/or hip pain. I am a back and side sleeper. Does this mean my mattress is too soft or too firm, or could something else be causing this? My mattress is memory foam over latex and is very comfortable.

The members of the forum need more information if we are going to be able to help you.

What kind of mattress do you actually have? How old is? Is it a pillow top mattress? Is it manufactured by one of the major big S brand companies, (Sealy, Simmons, Serta) or some other offbrand company? What size is it? ( twin, Queen, King) How much did you pay for it? Do you have a partner that sleeps with you in the same bed? If so, how do they feel about the mattress? What is your height and weight? Would you...

Hi Eagle,

Perhaps her information came from here:

http://www.flobeds.com/pdf/coreexchange.pdf

This is the pdf file with instructions for exchanging cores.  Very last sentence on the page: "Please return within 10 days of receipt of cores."

What concerns me more is this statement on their website:

"The latex you receive may have fractures or be uneven and may have been repaired with nontoxic glue. These will not affect the ability to provide your body with superior support. Latex may be gently washed with soap and water."

Were any of your latex cores  . . . fractured . . .uneven . . . . repaired with glue?

Kimberly: In talking with Dewey today about the return time frame, I was told that this was an old publication, that they had not had a chance to redo. Their policy has been, for some time, to allow the customer whatever time frame they need within the 90...

You can see a comparison of the composition of all of these "S" brand "latex" mattresses on this chart by US Mattress:

http://site.namebrandbeds.com/latex-mattress-comparison-chart.html

From the description of the mattress you have given, it looks like your mattress is branded on the above chart as the Simmons Natural Care Willowbrook Firm.  This mattress is 9 1/2" deep, but only 6" is actually latex.  The ILD is 28, which is considered a "medium" firmness in latex.  The rest of the mattress is composed of foam base layers and fillers.

The issue you ought to be concerned about is how much latex really is in these "latex" mattresses?  Some of them are branded as latex mattresses but actually contain very little latex and a lot of PU foam, which is *not* long lasting or durable.  Many people have complained about the PU foam layers in these "S" brand mattresses degrading within a very short time, leaving...

I would also call a few places (sleeplikeabear for example), describe your situation, and see what they recommend in terms of how much latex (or other) to add....

I think you will likely need 3". But that depends on how firm your new mattress is and how soft of a feel you like.

Foamsource.com has latex toppers on sale right now. I believe you can return toppers purchased over the internet. I don't think they carry any 1" though.

Costco has a great return policy, but no latex as far as I know. Sleeplikeabear.com has 1-3" latex toppers. I believe you can return with an authorization.

You will probably have to pay the shipping for a return (except perhaps costco if you bring to a store).

I am not sure about foambymail.com's return policy. But others have said that their latex seems irregular and may not be as good.

Of course, you should call and ask about the return policy before you buy....

I am considering purchasing a latex mattress in the near future.  I've been doing my homework by researching and visiting several local showrooms to try them.  There are two main reasons why I like them: long lasting promise and ecological friendly approach.  What I like least is: the high cost of this set.  Therefore, I want to make a smart investment with my next purchase.  I would really like to hear comments from other savvy buyers (satisfied and non satisfied) who can give me advised in this matter. Any recommendations or considerations I should be looking for?  Thank you very much!

The specification of the mattress set I am looking at:
