Re: Soliciting feedback on Vi-Spring and Hypnos - DianeK

I do not own either but have checked them out quite extensively, and spent a night on a Hypnos. As a 100lb female side sleeper this is how I would rate them: Hypnos - very firm, Vi-Spring - firm to medium-firm. I would recommend adding Green Sleep to your list as they make a high quality spring bed and use latex as the comfort top which won't compress like some of the other fibres used in Hypnos and Vi-Spring upholstery. They would all be in a similar price range....

You are quite right, they do not make them like they used to. If you want an "old-fashioned" (I mean this as a compliment) mattress you are likely going to have to investigate higher end products like McRoskey, Beckley, Hypnos, Vi-spring. If you are Canadian, there is Marshall Mattress out of Ontario. Good luck....

LOL well I guess we could sort of say that. I really think this idea that the coils migrate is more a myth. Pocket coils flex more than most standard springs as they are not reinforced by helical wires, so the foam itself flexes more than it does on a normal spring....this might somewhat contribute to more severe body indentations which does seem to happen. I guess my skepticism is just that none of these people probably ever looked on the inside of the mattress after it 'failed'. I have cut open a few warrantied Simmons mattresses. I would even cut the springs out of the pockets where the major indentations in the mattress were located, I would measure the height of the coil inside and outside of the pocket (they were precompressed before being placed in the pockets) so it was a pretty...

I don't think a Gardner is any much more handmade than a normal bed, but I will say it looks like good materials used for the price. Basically all mattresses in the world have some aspects of their construction that are done by hand. I would say to call a mattress legitimately hand made then the fillings have to be sorted by hand, the coils have to be stitched together by hand and the upholstery has to be hand tufted. When its all said and done....none of them will be inexpensive...not to say they wouldn't be reasonable.
Some mattress companies that fit most of those descriptions (other than hand tied coils) - McRoskey, SleepTek (tufted innerspring mattress), Royal-Pedic, Green Sleep (pocket coil ones are stitched together rather than using glue). I believe the most aggressively priced out of this category is the SleepTek Innerspring mattress although it is...

Sandman, natural animal fillings are more sumptuous than latex...I would expect them to conform better than latex and definitely be more breathable, with the adverse being that they compress. I know that these guys are getting these coils made for them by someone in the UK, judging by the photo I would say it looks like a Vi-Spring coil.
IMO the whole point of a bed like a Vi-Spring or a Hastens (many of which cost less than this Kluft bed, btw), is that they contain no foam at all. A couple of layers of natural latex is one thing, but "bio-foam" literally means its going to be maybe 30% soy or castor bean oil foam....its cheap, and it doesn't belong in a $2,000 mattress yet alone something like this.
The Vispring's that are less than half the price of this, are using equally good mattress...

If latex foam is really all so terrible then why does Hastens use it in Carpe Diem Beds?
I realize that all materials have their limitations. The natural fillings in a Hastens (or other brands similar to Hastens) would provide a more sumptuous feeling and would be more breathable than any variety of foam, however at the expense of not holding their shape as well (as latex) and for some requiring much more maintenance.
I think at the end of the day...to the OP, you really have to convince this friend to actually let you use their Hastens bed for atleast a few nights to help you decide what is best.
At the end of the day outside of something like a Hastens or Vi-Spring there really is not a lot of good soft mattresses you can buy that don't use foam of any...

Thanks so much for your feedback. I don't really feel like spending thousands of dollars for a Hypnos or Vi-Spring mattress, so I'm going to go with the Sealy Posturepedic Alanson ($400) at Costco. If it ever turns out to be defective, I can always return it to Costo for replacement or refund.
It's amazing that the only high-quality, innerspring mattresses that I could find, at what I assume to be a reasonable (read: not $5,000), mattress was from Gardner.
Thanks again. :)

Soliciting feedback on Vi-Spring and Hypnos - michaelkyip

Hello everyone,
I am new to the forum and have been digging into the archives on my research for my next mattress. Both my fiance and I prefer the feel of spring mattress over latex and that's what we are considering at the moment.
So far, I have learned from here is to avoid the plush/pillow tops as they tend to break down over a relatively short time. Also, the 3 "S" brands were not what they used to be. I have also get to learned about lesser known brands like Vi-Spring and Hypnos. These brands seem to be mythical and have no review at all anywhere. Are there any owners here who would like to share their thoughts?
