Re: De-constructing a mattress and box springs - haysdb

This is very unexpected. I feel like I just tore apart a perfectly good mattress. 13 year old Sealy Posturepedic La Costa Ultra Plush, a two sided mattress about 12" thick. No impressions, no outward signs that it was breaking down. Take it apart and no INWARD signs that it's breaking down either. How can this be? There is nothing exotic inside - just some fiberfill and two thin layers of PU foam in the quliting, with layers of PU foam and cotton batting under that.

From the (Bonnell) springs up:
  1. A layer of nylon mesh, almost like chicken wire
  2. Two 1/4" thick layers of foam with a pretty high tensile strength (hard to tear)
  3. ~1" Cotton batting (this would have surely compressed, but it did so evenly across the surface)
  4. 1 1/4" convoluted foam
  5. In the ~1.5" quilted cover (top down)
    1. Fiberfill
    2. 1/2" foam
    3. 3/16" foam
Uncompressed this is about 4.25" of material on each side of the...

Going to the Mattresses - How to cut through the marketing gimmicks of Sealy, Serta, and the rest.

Here's a fun game I play. First, I walk into a mattress store and ask what's on sale. Then, I throw my hands in the air and shout along with the salesman, "EVERYTHING'S ON SALE!!!!" Oh how we laugh, the salesman and I. And while he's still chuckling, I turn around and walk out, because I fricking hate mattress salesmen.

Is there a more maddening industry? They confuse us with silly product names (the Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Fletcher Ultra Plush Pillowtop or the Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Brookmere Plush?). They flummox us with bogus science ("pocketed coils"? "Microtek foundations"? "Fiberlux"?). And they weigh us down with useless features (silk damask ticking?). It's like buying a used car, and almost as expensive—I've seen mattresses going...

Since your husband and you prefer different comfort levels on your mattress, I suggest (when you find the space), you invest in an Eastern King size, only in the form of two Extra Long Twin mattresses and foundations. Put them in the same king frame. That way you can have your side as firm as you want and he can have his as plush and cushy as HE likes. This is how my husband and I have slept for the past 15+ years or so. And, yet to look at our bed you would think it was all one King mattress. We use King bedding which ties the bed together, but at the same time two XL Twins allow us to move independently, as well as choose our own comfort levels.

Best wishes to you!

i guess they just don't make 'em like they used to. I can't remember, haysdb, but did you say you were having discomfort when sleeping on this mattress? Or were you just curious to see what was inside? I imagine if I tore apart my old Serta two-sided mattress which is now about 20 years old, I wouldn't find anything or very little wrong with it inside. Even the boxspring is in fine condition.

But, there still could be aging issues with it that you can't tell with the "naked, layman's eye". When my mattress builder opened up my husband's XL Serta (cheapie pillow top from 1992), he said the springs were in perfect condition. But, he knew right away that the foam had broken down. I wish I had been there to see it myself to see what he meant. For all I know, it would have looked okay...
Costco Sealy "Sedona Springs Ultra Plush" mattress...I'm at my wit's end with mattresses! - centralpark

First off, I should reveal that I prefer sleeping on my back or on my stomach. I'm about 5'6", in the 130 pound range. I slept on a Sealy Posturepedic mattress for about 19 years that never gave me a problem (I added a foam topper to it), but I let the mattress delivery men take it away when my new Simmons Beautyrest Exceptionale plush mattress was delivered a year or so ago. If I had known then what I know now about the mattressses of today, I would have happily kept my old mattress. The Beautyrest was uncomfortable and didn't provide enough back support...when I slept on my stomach, my back was arching forward too much. I tried a Simmons Westin Heavenly Bed which is a pillowtop mattress that receives rave reviews...I would wake up every morning with lower back pain, but as soon as I got out of bed, the back pain disappeared. When I would wake up on that mattress, I...
How's this spring mattress I just ordered? - novahelp

I ordered this Sealy as I plan to now put my own 3" latex or memory foam topper on top of the strong coil system
This one, according to the salesman, Sealy Posturepedic Wyrick is basically just the coil with some padding.

What I liked is this salesman understood what I was trying to do and didn't try to upsell me on more plush models since I planned to use my own comfort layers. Also they will give me one free total bed exchange if I don't like it...

Was thinking of keeping the soft 2.9" layer from my SleepEz bed to use as the topper.

Thoughts?...

I have been web researching for weeks and I am trying to make the final decision on a latex mattress. This is a cold purchase for me and my husband, as we have been unsuccessful in finding a single latex mattress to try out in our town, even for a few minutes. I have spent countless hours researching online, reading reviews, scanning buyers guides, comparison shopping, nit-picking, etc. I even ordered a latex and wool sample from one of the websites that offers them for free. Yet every morning I wake up groaning in my awful, 17-year-old sagging bed and swear that today I am going to bite the bullet and choose a mattress. And then I end up here at 11 pm, not wanting to crawl into bed, but fearful of hitting the "confirm order" button on the checkout page.

My husband and I have decided to buy a latex mattress for support, durability, and allergies....
