Re: Latex didn't work for us, now what??? Sleeping on Aero bed, desperately need advice!!! - Lynn2006

I have a Flobed (bought in May 2007) and yes I was frustrated at first getting it right since I started out too soft which causes lower back pain but I wanted some cushion for my pressure points since I sleep on my side.  I now have my bed very firm but with a 1" soft topper over it. The topper is necessary to have the very soft cushion. Since I am not quite 5 feet tall I finally found what worked for me was to replace the 2" convoluted topper with a 1" very soft natural latex topper.  I tried to sleep without a topper but then the bed was always too firm or too soft and I always woke up in pain.  I would give FloBeds a chance and I feel their topper may be what you need.  Also the pillow makes a difference. I sleep on a...

Orien, be careful of making the comment about not being allergic to some poly since you are in a big open space at the store and the bed has been sitting there outgassing and it may be different in a small space. I had a problem with a bed with polyutethane in it from Rockaway bedding that lied to me and told me it was 100% natural latex (no natural latex at all in the bed but some man-made latex mixed with Polyurethane and that awful suede top that only looked nice.... I had to sleep in a different room to breath on the floor since I had no other beds in my home) in it and had to send it back due to not being able to breath and being allergic to it but of course it had a greater percentage of Polyurethane.  I then slept on the floor and...

We get so many of these “newbie needs help” posts like this that I thought I would take a crack at writing a general summary (for latex mattresses). This may seem silly, as there are already a ton of informative posts and “highlighted threads” on this forum. But the sheer size of the forum makes it difficult for newbies to find the posts that would most help them, and most of the “highlighted threads” seem to be about “mattress surgery” (improving an existing mattress). This post is intended to address the “where should I start” questions I typically see (and don’t have time to answer). It's really just all the notes I made to keep track of things myself. It's neither definitive nor complete; if you want more info on anything just do a search in the forum.

Executive Summary:

If you...

I purchased a blended talalay Sleepez bed and was told it was LI.  If it isn't I'd be disappointed, and just one more reason I downgrade Sleepez over Flobeds.  Flobeds sources LI.

I would say that my situation is a bit different.  I am taller and heavier (6'4", 213) and almost exclusively a side sleeper.  I tend to like a mattress that a plush but dense feel on top (not fluff like a pillowtop) with a pretty firm (but also springy) support level.  I like to sink is a bit to reduce pressure points, but I don't like the feeling of sinking into a crater.

I could not get totally comfortable with all latex or a memory foam bed.  I wanted to be able to blend memory foam and latex, and I also thought have a spring base might be cooler and more consistent support.

What I ended up doing was cutting open a fairly new Sealy (Reserve with 782 14 gauge coils) and replacing the foam.   So, over the coils I have 2" of 32 100% natural...

I filled out Flobeds chart on their web site - the weight, level of comfort etc.

I wanted a soft surface and it gave me this:

bottom layer xfirm, layer above it xfirm and the v zone layer as xfirm!

I am confused, why would it give me xfirm layers and even vzone as xfirm?

my weight is 221 lbs. sleep on my sides, and age is between 40-49.

And I want a soft upper surface but I don't want to bottom out in the mattress either (well who does want to bottom out?)

and it is giving me vzone layer as x-firm? That would not be soft.

Someone please explain...

Thanks,I appreciate your advice. I have some questions.

1  what should I buy?

Blended talalay latex or Natural talalay latex?

2  I sleep on my sides.

What layer configuration is best for me.

(about dunlop latex, it was just so firm that I could not sleep)

3. Should I also get the foundation along with the latex mattress?

Out of the 3 foundations listed which one should I get?

Thank you jim, budgy, and richard.

1. I am personally biased to believe Natural rubber is superior to blended rubber.  But it is a...

Temple,

I can only give you suggestions based on my research and what ive been told by companies like Flobeds and SleepEZ...  If you are going to spend a nice "chunk of change", why not pay a few extra dollars and get an all latex mattress that will last you 20+ years...

Any mattress with Lux bases or Polyfoam of any sort placed anywhere in your mattress has an average life expectancy of 4-10 years...depending on density and manufacturer.  Why not simply purchase an all latex mattress?  Im not completely familiar with FBM, so I cant comment on the product, or what they have available;  But companies such as Flobeds and Sleepez offer layered latex mattresses for customization and adjustability.  Now latex may not be for everyone, but it seems as tho this whole forum is mostly consumed by latex.  There are reasons for...

Thanks for the responses.

Kimberly H, did you already receive your sleep ez bed?  If so, did it have manufactor's label?  If not, would you let me know when you get it?

I'm interested in "natural talalay" and am trying to make sure that is what I would get if I ordered from sleep ez.  I can't afford flobeds at the moment.

After extensive Internet research (including this forum), we ordered this from SleepEz:

Select Sleep Cal-King 13,000 100% Natural Talalay Latex Mattress
my side:Soft/Medium/Firm/Firm
husbands side:Medium/Firm/XFirm/Xfirm

Some days we woke up fine, other days my lower back was throbbing in pain and husband felt "achy all over" (he said he never felt like this on any other mattress and he travels alot). I tried his side and it seemed way too firm for me. We also tried different layer combos from the above. I was confused on keeping it or not because some days we felt fine, but the 90days was running out and I got nervous, so we returned it.

I keep thinking maybe we should have kept it and tried other layer combos, but I honestly don't have a lot of time/patience for that and...
