Re: Neck pain from old pillow after sleeping on new latex mattress - BeddyBye

Hi Sabra!

I'm glad things are going well for you with your new mattress! Don't you just love it when you wake up without the nagging back and hip pain? I think you're right about needing another type of pillow now. I tried latex, but they were just too uncomfortable for me. I'm back to down. I like being able to squish it to conform to my neck and head.

I totally agree with you about doing the research here and how we should give newbies a break when they ask questions. Frankly, I've even learned things from their queries that I might not have known before.

By the way, how do I access the old forum again? I used to post there a lot, but can't locate the URL in my Favorite Places.

for some reason I just grabbed the specs off a random s/f latex model, NOT the saybrook point which is the one we are looking at.  I was gettingmore at the material content, not the specific amounts of materials.  Sorry for the confusion!    Here are the layers of the Saybrook Point:

  • Exquisite Quilt  Cover
    • 1.0 ounce FlameGuard Silk/Wool Blend
    • 1-1/2 x 1/2 " Convoluted SuperSoft Flawless Foam
    • 1/2" Supersoft Flawless Foam
  • Comfort Layers
    • 1 x 1/2" Convoluted Genuine Latex Foam
    • 1/4" Genuine Latex Foam
    • 1" SuperSoft Flawless Foam
  • Core
    • 1.57" Plush Luxury Latex
    • 1.57" Firm Luxury Latex
    • 5.71" Firm Luxury Latex

NOte that the above configuration has 4 and 3/4" of SOFT foam on top of the core! That's WAY too much soft foam! No one could sleep...

I certainly do believe it.  I'm looking for a replacement for my S/F right now.  It's just the more I read the more complicated this gets.  Not only do I have to figure out the layers of latex top to bottom, now I have to figure out the zones as well.  That makes for (forgive my poor math skills) a heck of a large number of variables and possible combinations to try before getting it right.  *sigh*

It really isn't that complicated for most people. It becomes more complicated if you have back or neck or shoulder problems.

For most people, I don't think zones are necessary. Maybe better, but not necessary.

Not to be a shill for flobeds, but it's really a good business model (at least from the customers' point of view; I have no idea how much money they're making, LOL!) because they have people...

Jim,
a couple more questions/thoughts......on the one hand I am liking the idea of getting a basic, 'good' coil firm mattress with almost zero padding, and then buying my own toppers, such as you are working through.  On the other hand, while a 'good' spring mattress is often recommended, the big S companies are always NOT recommended- so where to find a 'good' coil mattress.  What exactly IS a good coil and who makes it?

Second, a thought- I wonder if an upholsterer would be able to neatly open up a mattress to remove the crappy foam layers and then stitch it up again neatly or maybe even install a zipper?  Maybe this is cost prohibitive but it is just a thought I had.

I just can't make up my mind about what I want to do....every day I find myself giving up and just resolving to buy one of the S/F latex...

I think some people find it hard to believe that names  like "Sealy" and "Sterns and Foster" make crappy mattresses.

They'll have to learn for themselves.

Re: Questions about Dream Coil Topper - Sabra
Apr 5, 2008 4:42 AM
I got my Dream Coil topper yesterday and I was so excited. I pulled the 2.5" convoluted HR foam one off the bed that I had been using (bought at a local fabric/foam outlet and don't know ILD except they call it "mattress grade" foam). The old foam is in great shape and very comfortable but just a little too hard to roll over on--had to get a little momentum and it would awaken me. So...

After sleeping on the Dream Coil I woke up a bit achy and so did my husband although that can randomly happen with us anyway. We both felt we tossed and turned more to get comfortable although the bed felt heavenly when we first went to sleep.

If I put my old convoluted HR topper back on with the Dream Coil on top it will be too high and probably be even more bouyant. Should...

I appreciate all your remarks and responses. I'll post in the next couple days how my new JC Penney latex zoned pillow feels after sleeping on it. I picked it up today and the loft is about the same as my old latex but I can tell the ILD is much softer, around 20 is my guess. I do hope it solves the neck pain problem.

To answer 2 previous questions, my new bed is a Sealy Springfree latex, a model carried by Bassett (Bedford Knolls, an ultra plush, but no pillow top). This model is duplicated under several names--Meadowcrest and Rivercrest being 2 of them. For now I feel like Goldilocks...my old bed was too hard, my new bed I purchased from Costco (S & F Hainsworth, same as Sealy Spring Free with a box top) was way too soft. My one year old "used" Beford Knolls mattress from Craigs LIst seems just right, and...

Neck pain from old pillow after sleeping on new latex mattress; TWO NEW QUESTIONS...HELP! - Sabra
Mar 2, 2008 3:00 AM
I'm sleeping so good on my new latex mattress--it's been six days and I have no more back and hip pain. But I do wake up with neck pain. I didn't  realize when I changed to a mattress with more give, the old latex pillow would feel too thick/firm for my neck and head placement. I think I will have to get a thinner or softer latex pillow so my head is not up quite so high. On my hard old spring mattress, my thick latex pillow was just right. I'm going to check out the JC Penney zoned latex pillow some of you guys have mentined in the past. I'm not sure how they zone it, but hopefully it will be what the doctor ordered.

I am new in this forum and I do really appreciate the teaching and sharing of experiences that goes on here. I took a LOT...

Protect a Bed Mattress Pad--does a mattress accumulate pounds of sweat in 5 years? - Sabra
Feb 29, 2008 2:39 PM
Hello All,

I have a new latex mattress and of course want to protect it. I purchased a nice, classic cotton fitted mattress pad for it. My Sealy Springfree has a little PU on top of the latex and a beautiful soft cover that cannot be removed without "mattress surgery".

But a salesman told me that I needed a Protect a Bed Mattress Pad, which protects a mattress from moisture because after 5 years of perspiration and dead skin, the mattress cover over the PU foam will soak up pounds of unwanted moisture. (And that's why we weigh less in the morning than at night) It grossed me out but I can't forget it.

Does anyone know if this is true? We don't have children or pets in the bed, neither do we drink or spill things in it. I'll pay for the Protect a Bed pad if we need it, just don't want to...

Hi LPAD,

I did just what you have thought about doing. Over the weekend I purchased the Sealy/S&F mattress that you supplied contents of (the 2nd time): the Saybrook Point/River Crest/Meadow Crest/ Bedford Knoll. I slept on it last night and it was wonderful. I have had lower back, hip and neck pain and only woke up with neck pain due to a pillow thats too firm.

I plan to do what Jimsocial did and disassemble it if and when the top PU foam and convoluted latex wears out. It will still have a 9 inch latex core that is supposed to last for 20 years. The latex box top mattress that I just turned back into Costco was indeed too plush, but this one feels just right, at least for now.

I did get a big blessing because I found it on Craigs List for $750--original price $3150 at Bassett. It is only...
