Re: What part to cut for matress surgery. - sandman

I think you are on the right track that it depends on whether or not you want to keep the top layer on.  I cut just above (or inside) the bead to leave more of a cup like structure to put the foam in.   Initially I cut 3 sides (top, one side and bottom) to create a flap that I thought I might re-attach.

However, when I realized that the top also had a bunch of junky foam sewn in (which lacked support and was hotter), I ended up cutting the whole top off.    Then I put the latex foam in and put a wool filled mattress pad over the whole things.

If you know for sure you want to use the top (what is the top filled with?), then it might be easier to reattach if you cut below the bead (maybe).   I would leave at least one side attached.  However, I...

Re: First post. Building a FBM mattress. Latex over memory foam? - shovel99

Hi,

First welcome and good luck in finding what works.  Most of what I read online indicates that nearly half of reviewers don't like their mattresses, and it is indeed a smarmy industry of hiding the names and facts to avoid price competition.

I bought and tried no fewer than 26 mattresses over the course of five years and tried a wide variety of toppers of latex and memory foam.  I am perhaps 75% side sleeper, 25% back/flip flop restless, age 62 male, 165 pounds, 6'.  I injured my back several years ago and that has likely prevented me from finding the "perfect" bed.  I have thrashed around with this so long that my wife and I sleep in separate rooms.... "most" of the time... and because we are both restless sleepers, get much better sleep this way.

Quick hits:  Memory foam even if...

Reply to Kevin.. my first experience was with the I-Comfort Serta Prodigy.. poor choice lost a ton of money with it.. actually still own that one it is in my guest room.. all my guests love it.. then switched it out for the Tempupedic it was a firm one.. forgot the name, it will come to me.. but it was supposed to be the firm..however lucky to have a good sales person who got me out of that money mess.... but ended up trading that in as it was HOT  HOT HOT>.. the I-comfort never got hot at all.. but even with the firm Temp. I just kept sinking and every body part was killing..I will never go that route ever again.. I have a cheap-o coil Restonic now that cost me 1000 even.. and I don't hate it.. but it is  a 1000 times better on my body than...

Valid concerns.  I don't have enough experience to advise you definitively.  As I see it, the comfort layer cradles...

The original post was quite a while ago, but hopefully someone else can confirm or deny this:

I gather that the condensation and subsequent mold/mildew was viewable to the naked eye (post(s) describe spots or a spot of a color).

But what if the memory foam wreaks of mildew but can not be seen at all?

Two years ago my husband and I purchased a whole new bedroom set, which included the Sealy Bay Island Memory Foam mattress and box springs. We were in love with it until about six months later I lifted the mattress and saw a 6 foot by 3 foot section of mold! I was furious and called Sealy. They replaced it (which took about six months!) and said that this...

Please Help!!! Deciding on Air Mattress beds - Tean94

My wife and I have a 10 yr. Sealy Spring Queen Mattress, which one of the springs has popped out of the top on the edge of the bed.  It was on my wife's side, and then suddenly it's now on my side!

Needless to say, it's time for a new one.  Not to mention I have PLMD (Periodic Limb Movement Disorder), which is where my legs will rock while I'm asleep and usually when I'm dreaming.  My wife is constantly complaining that she's often woken by the feeling of her head rocking back and forth because my legs are moving.  I'm also on CPAP, but it doesn't seem to help that much in that regard.

I've done a LOT of research on Air Beds and I've narrowed it down to two brands.  Innomax Medallion and the Habitat Ascend.  Though I'm heavily leaning...

We purchased a Sealy Latex Foam Mattress, Shelter model just about two years ago.  We have been turning the mattress but felt it was sagging a bit so we lifted up the mattress, only to find black and green mold growing between the mattress and box spring (My bed skirt was covered plus it was on the boxspring and mattress).  YUCK!  We were shocked since we paid $2966 for the mattress and boxspring.  I contacted where we got it and they came and looked at it.  They said they have never seen anything like it and would talk to the Sealy Rep.  They called me back and said the Sealy Rep said, they have never had any moisture, mold complaints.  They offered to replace the box spring only. They said because we live around a creek and have a crawl space under our house and probably humid in our area, it must be...

GK, thanks so much for the input.

I worry that a core of 40-44 exclusively will be too firm for both my g/f and myself. My reasoning primarily comes down to situations where I have tried or had beds with a very firm support core that doesn't give enough beneath a soft comfort zone. My hips and abdomen "bottom out" onto the support core and then I get pressure points where they're flat against the support core. Would a core of 3" 44 and 3" 36 ILD be enough support? The jump from 24 or 28 to 40 seems like a big jump from one layer to the next. Granted, with a 14-17% softening over 10 years even with Latex, I may need to get even more creative.

For side sleeping, it seems that the V-zone mattress would be ideal, but I...

More Mattress Woes, Need Help with Latex - pygmalionundone

Hello all,

I apologize for the long post, but some background may be helpful. Basically, my girlfriend and I have had some AWFUL luck with mattresses over the past year.  We've now returned THREE king sized mattresses due to issues.

Our first was a Sealy PerfectDay I-series Ceremony Super Pillow Top. This felt amazing at first, but within 2 weeks, I was walking around more hunched over than some 90 year-olds. It was too plush for me, although my g/f loved it. So, we returned it (for a small fortune) and tried again.

Next, I went to Bed-In-A-Box. I was impressed with the company's way of doing business, appreciated their liberal return policy, and actually got to try out some models because I just happen to live near Piney Flats TN. we got their 17 inch adjustable mattress, with twin-xl splits...
