I haven't owned a Simmons. My parents have one in their guest room. It's firm or ultra firm with little foam, and I know that it softened up lots from when it was new. My parents Simmons also sags in the middle now, even with extra supports under it.
I've read lots of complaints that the Simmons goes too soft within 2-3 months. Maybe yours still hasn't broken in. I've read lots of complaints that the Simmons goes "too soft" within 2-3 months, compared to how it was new.
I have an Imperial Bedding Orthopedic Ultra Firm model #49 Bonnell innerspring mattress and spring foundation set. Now, that set is rock hard firm in full size, and it also has little padding. It's more firm than...

Imperial Bedding
Orthopedic Ultra Firm
Model 49 with cover A26, I believe.
It has the matching box spring, can't see the springs, but there are 6-7 slats and it's only a full size set.
I'm sure about the model number; I think I remember the cover number right. Peach color woven jacquard, and I love that slick cool fabric and I hate all those sleazy knitter foamy synthetic covers that mattress-makers use today.
Model 49 is no longer on Imperial's web site, just to save you checking. I am planning to call them and see if it's still made, or what today's equivalent model is, since I don't need to buy my queen set yet. I bought that full size set in Nitro, WV, back...

Their innersprings are new, not recycled, and made by Leggett & Platt. I believe that the "custom" innerspring for the orthopedic series is also L&P but I forgot to specifically ask. Their delivery charge is what I called "zoned", meaning it goes up the further they have to go from the warehouse or store.
YMMV, but the three that I liked best, in order:
Orthopedic Ultra Firm. I'd probably pay the $20 for the extra edge foam cylinders for stiffening, just because I plan on using the mattress a good number of years. The orthos have the extra slat(s) and thus more springs in the box spring, have heavier gauge coils, and...

LOL! This thread is a good short primer.
Here's another guide and it also discusses foundations a little: http://extension.usu.edu/files/publications/factsheet/HI_08.pdf

I am currently using 2.5" of Aerus 5 lb memory foam, which seems to aleviate the hip and should pain. However, my neck is killing me! I have read that most side sleepers need a high loft pillow, however, I don't know if that is true for side sleepers who sleep with their head on...

The best research I have seen on it was from dbHayes in the legacy forum and his post in this forum refers to the old threads in the legacy forum http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/forum/intelli-gel-crossgel-flexgel-galastic-intelli-bed-mycomfort-geltec/153-0-1.html
Another good thread from this forum is here http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/forum/has-anyone-bought-nexgel-mattress/8137-A-1.html
Budgy mentioned in this thread that he was carrying it and was waiting for someone heavier to test it out on. That was a while ago so he probably could tell us more than anyone about how it is performing.
It seems that mycomfort didn't survive the recession and that Natura who bought the rights to Nex-gel http://www.nexgel.com/ is now servicing their warranty issues http://www.mycomfortmyway.com/
This sort of implies that the mycomfort material and Natura's Nex-gel/ortho-gel are the same stuff.
