***Latex is the highest quality foam you can buy. There are 2 quality brands of latex: Talalay and Dunlop. Talalay feels bouncy and Dunlop feels hard and firm. Some prefer one and some prefer the other. Dunlop is getting a little harder to get but some places sell it and use it in their latex mattresses. Latex can be used for both a core or foundation, and as toppers, as it comes in various firmnesses which are referred to as ILD. A lower ILD is softer, a higher ILD is firmer. (There is a 3rd type of latex which is made in India or other exotic locations and thus has no real quality control to it. You may not really know what the ILD is because there is little or no quality control or standards, and it may not last as long as Talalay...

Hi everyone :-) I'm in dire need of a new mattress and, thanks to this forum, I've decided that latex is probably the best way to go. I'm planning to purchase a mattress/topper combo from foambymail.com, but I have a question regarding the ILD of the latex. I've seen it mentioned in a couple of different threads that the 6" firm mattress cut in half is equivalent to two 3" medium toppers. So if I were to extrapolate using that information, you can essentially create a firmer sleeping surface by adding more layers of the same ILD. Does this sound correct?

I'm currently sleeping on an Aerus Natural memory foam mattress that is comprised of 3" of 4 lb. memory foam over a polyurethane core, and it is like sleeping on a mushy slab of granite -- pressure points galore!...

No, you would get two 3" firm toppers.

Not at all.

Nope, but I do have a caveat: You might want to measure your mattress after the requisite 72 hour period for full expansion. My memory foam mattress from Wal-Mart (Aerus Natural 10") is two inches short length-wise, and a half an inch short in width. I don't mind that it's not quite as wide as specified, but I feel cheated on the length. At 5'6", my toes should not be dangling over the foot of a full-size mattress!...

Correction: It's a 90 day iron-clad money back guarantee. :-D I say go for it. I acquired my current mattress, a 10" Aerus Natural memory foam mattress, through Walmart, and am planning to return that sucker just as soon as my 9" icoil mattress comes in. The reviews were overwhelmingly positive for my mattress, as well, but, as the previous poster has stated, it's all a matter of personal preference. It's a crap shoot, but a worthwhile crap shoot so long as you have the means of returning an expanded mattress that doesn't work out for you.

Keep in mind that virtually all (if not all) of those reviews were written fairly recently after purchasing the mattress, so unknown longevity is an issue to take into consideration. I read somewhere that most memory foam loses 50% of its density and resiliency within one...

Sandman:  I am curious as to what the difference is between Aerus and Sensus...could you please expand on this?

As an aside, I had long ago rejected memory foam after a horrible three nights in a B & B on a Tempurpedic a few years ago.  After my husband had major surgery this fall, we needed to sleep separately, so he moved to the guest bedroom that has a run of the mill PU mattress but soon found it too firm for his battered body.  So we got the NovaForm 3" topper from Costco as an short-term solution for this foam bed and it was just the ticket for him.  When we first got it, I tried it for a nap and found it too firm under my hips and shoulders.  But now, after 4 months of him sleeping on it, it has softened enough that I can sleep...

Thanks. I ordered a new mattress cover that has wool tufting instead of polyester. That may help some. I think my sheets are a pretty high thread count (and fairly new unfortunately), so I may have to rethink those as well.

I having been researching the Aerus Natural memory foam by Foamex. It supposedly is cooler and circulates air better. Comes is different densities, 3lb., 4lb, 5lb.,etc. Hard to find the right inches and density though at a good price.

Have not found too many reviews comparing its temperature moderation to "regular" memory foam. Maybe be worth a try.

Aerus "Natural" in other-than-4lb densities - garypen

Has anybody seen Aerus in anything other than 4lb density? According to the Foamex website, it is now available in 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8lb densities!!!
http://www.foamex.com/html/04_home_bedding_aerus.php

"The evolution of the new open-cell, highly breathable Aerus Natural family now provides for an enhanced and expanded line that includes 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, and 8.0 pound density offerings."

I have been somewhat interested in trying Aerus, due to it's advertised cooler properties. But, the lower 4lb density kept me away. But, after reading the above, I am especially interested in the 6 and 8lb densities.

Has anybody seen any of that anywhere? (They have a plant near me in San Leandro. I wonder which foams they make there, and if they sell "samples" right there.)

Also, anybody have any experience with the 4lb?

Sealy Posturepedic Gray Haven Cushion Firm surgery photos, and additional info. - Matress

Below, please find the photos which I took yesterday. Thanks Sandman for your idea, photos, and input. Thanks also to jimsocal for your comments and suggestions.

I'm not sure where this bed falls in the Sealy lineup, but I paid $ 1,100.00 for a king size set (two twin XL mattresses and box springs). The latex bed I bought about four years ago was 100% latex, no poly foam, and it was purchased from a local mattress store. I believe it had a 6" to 8" base (core) of 24-36 ILD (I don't remember for sure) natural latex (it may have been 4" of 36 ILD, then 4" of 32 ILD or 24 ILD, then a 2" top layer of softer latex, around 19 ILD? My shoulders stayed on top of the bed, and my hips sank. The bed overall felt hard. We tried a modular foundation and a coil foundation beneath, but...
