Re: Replacing my 1994 Simmons Maxipedic "Concorde" open coil mattress - olenska

you are second shopper who has come on this board and ended up with a simmons, even though most posters caution against that brand. most of their mattresses are now made with 14 or 15 gauge coil. they do use a lot of them, but the weakness of the steel itself tells you these are going to be soft mattresses. the brands recommended above - beckley and shifman - use the holland maid open offset 12 3/4 gauge coil. they are expensive, but if you watch craigslist you can sometimes find one new or almost new for half price or lower. shifman makes some models with a 12.5 guage, even firmer. at that firmness a side sleeper would need a soft topper, but you would have the support. there are some smaller companies and many many local mattress makers who make firm offset coil mattresses. I have posted a few...

bummer that they will not let you go with the higher end brands. as a stomach sleeper you need Firm bigtime or you are going to ginch your back immediately. either latex or the stearns and foster extended life with the 12 3/4 gauge coil would work for you. of what else is left, hard to say. have the store look through their specs and find you a mattress with a 12 1/2 or 12 3/4 gauge coil. otherwise they do sell a designer serta latex that you might be able to get in a firm density. they are not giving you a lot of options. simmons makes the softest mattress out there and it would kill your back. you could never tolerate it. so I would nix that right away.

ps - ask for the specs on any mattress that calls itself "orthopedic" . there are several...

Most likely will have to pick a coil mattress, just depends if you like the pocketed coils Simmons use or if you prefer other types Serta and Sealy use. While I think that Simmons makes softer mattresses overall, in the plush/ firm, firm models they use thicker coil gauges that are actually thicker than most of what Sealy or Serta use. I had a similar problem, I bought a Simmons pillowtop with latex that initially felt great, but after six months or so it became too soft because the mattress uses the thinner gauge coils at 15 gauge. Every mattress will break in a bit and feel different, softer than when you first get it so keep that in mind. Stick with the plush/firm or firm models with Simmons and you should have no problem.

Re: Help I'm returning Sleepy's Simmons mattress - myback

Post-script:  The plush top is too soft and my back hurts every morning.  Nothing I can do about it at this point...only one 'comfort return' at Sleepy's (not to mention the cost).  All I can say is I will never again buy or recommend a Simmon's Beautyrest. There is nothing pretty about it.

Thanks Kait. I was told S&F has changed their Springs and foams complete for this year, but I've seen those bad reviews of sagging bed. I just checked the S&F today again, and they have a good sale, so option is either to keep Simmons I got and add a topper, or to get the S&F that's got more foam on top (says it's a combo of Latex and Memory Foam).

I don't know about the springs or the foam that is in your mattress, sounds okay to me.  I think you might just need a topper to make a total of about 4" of cushion above the springs.  If you bed has 2" you need about 2" more.  You could try a polyfill topper...they feel great.

OK, I've been shopping for quite a while now. I decided to pass up on the Costco mattress, because it simply seems too cheap. Very little positive feedback either. CB2, Pottery Barn's newest venture, has a Simmons Classic Beautyrest for $650, but shipping is $279 from LA to Las Vegas, so think I will pass on that too.

Today, I visited Mattress Discounters and tried a Sealy Summer Hill mattress, which they will sell me for $800 (mattress only). Felt firm enough for me. Free delivery does not hurt either. wink

Will update when I purchase something.

I ended up going with the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Plush-Firm.  It was labeled at $1,799 and they sold it to me for $600, offered one free comfort exchange and free shipping...so I was content with that deal.

It's pretty firm.  Just got it home on Friday and have slept two nights on it.  Its a bit of an adjustment from sleeping on the way-too-soft latex for a week, but I feel its the right mattress.  Its definitely the firmest mattress I've ever owned.  Since it does feel like its providing just the right firm support, if I do anything I might buy a 1" medium latex topper to give it a bit of give on the surface, but so far so good.

I recently bought a clearance mattress at Sleepys, it was way too soft, and now Sleepy's is offering up to an 80% discount if I buy another.  This is not an ideal scenario, but seeing the situation I got myself in I feel a bit fortunate they are willing to work with me since their policy states NO returns or exchanges on clearance items.  With that said, if I had bought a regular model it would cost $250 for their comfort exchange...again, less than ideal, but if I end up spending $200-$300 to replace my mattress, I won't be much worse off than I would have with their comfort exchange on a non clearance item.  Additionally, I might be able to keep the first one I bought, which could be used as a great guest bed or for a friend or relative.

ONTO MY PURCHASE:

New - bunch of questions - Ser_renely

Hi I am new, and going through mattress troubles.  I have just realized that my bed is killing me when I sleep :(  I just got a new mattress, which is the same as my old one.  Its a "Simmons signature plush III", whatever that means :)  Its a pillow top, but only on one side.  Anyhow, I didn't buy this mattress nor do I own it or the one before and given where I live in the Caribbean there are no mattress stores about.

The issue is my lower back is killing me. I use to sleep on my side and still fall asleep that way, I think that is the way I want to sleep, but it becomes uncomfortable in my lower back and hip area, then I notice that I find myself sleeping on my stomach after I am asleep, with...

Thanks guys.

You make excellent points and I am convinced the kit is the way to go... my wife will come around I believe.

Her apprehension towards a kit "stacker" mattress is actually my fault. You see, a couple of years ago when our hand-me-down Simmons became unusable I got the idea (from the internet) to fashion my own "cheaperpedic"  DIY mattress and did so using layers of HD36, LUX, and memory foam.

Though it has always slept hot, it was ok for a while and has degraded to an unbearable level in the last year, so chalk one up in the "fail" column for my DIY attempt.

She understandably has kind of a "oh no... not another piece together mattress" attitude. laugh

Flobeds keeps getting mentioned and they look to have an excellent product....
