Re: Surgery On Simmons Danny Seo Latex? - markbnh1

Sandman, I have the same effect from my Natura wool mattress pad.  It makes the 3 inches of "medium" latex I have on top a bit firmer.  I think you are correct in that the mattress pad has tucked in cotton sides which pull tight when you lay on it.   It's fine with me since the latex was just a tad soft for me and now it's just right...haha.    That's why I think most folks prefer the Dormeir wool pad.   I believe it has stretchy knit sides and smoother stiching on top to preserve the feel of the latex.  The temperature control of either is excellent.   Just my 2 cents worth.

I don't know anything about this mattress, but I don't think the major S brands do the best job on latex.  Read this recent post about a Simmons latex.   This is one thing I could find on a springfree constuction.  I am not too excited about the Sealy foam and the high perfomance foam.  It is also not clear what the quality of the latex is.  Is it all synthetic?  A blend?  You try to find out exactly what is in it and the type of latex.

Personally I would prefer a latex that can be customized and you know what of latex is going in and there are no cheap PU foams (which Sealy foam is).

One suggestion, untested, is a rubberized coco- fiber mat layer.

I was looking at these mattresses in person (look through the website, they have many designs and versions, some where you can relocate the coco mat to a different level(s) in the mattress sandwich).

I read elsewhere (Bugsy?) that rubberized coco fiber mat is an ideal material for certain stiffening roles in bedding and upholstery, but it may be difficult to source. If it is so widely used, perhaps it can be sourced.

Along the same lines, I have a 1.5" organic wool filled topper that I bought at walmart.com (can't remember who makes it).  When I use that, it definitely seems to make my...

the foambymail  is 20ild,  i diff would not want the sleeplikeabear if it  smells,  foambymail does not very little,  does the latex made by latex intl,

make any different and my bed i got is a 400.00 simmons with very little foam on it so it would not sink in the middle, and i could add a latex topper

to make my own comfort.  also would 2 separate 1 inch pieces  have a diff feel  then one solid 2 in. piece.

also this is for dianeK   so sleeplikeabear website  for odor they say  this so it is not true?

    Sandman,

    Just reread your reply, thanks.

I have been experimenting with guest bedroom so my bride has her own bed for now.  We both snore, so

this has been a mixed blessing!  When I get this sorted out, I think she might prefer.

I am betting that a simmons with encased ring of outer coils, like this Serta, will be an OK canididate for

surgery, and I may hunt one down cheap just to try.  The foam encasement of the coils around this one

make a nice structural box for the spring system.

In a beautyrest surgery, it might make sense to tack glue the half inch layer of protection foam to the

top of the circumference to make the springs a unit.  They must hold them in place some way, anyway....

    Sandman:

Thanks for the insight.  I am hunting a Simmons BR on craigslist and will buy and whack on that first.. taking assuming, like you, that it is what I have liked in the past, but that the pocketed coils may want to walk or lie down.  If the BR surgery goes badly, I still have the interlinked Serta.    I found on www.usmattress.com that the firm lower priced Simmons BR have 13 gauge coils, and softer versions typically have 15 gauge coils.  A few years ago, I tried and " threw back" a couple of BR "classic' firm mattresses early in my search.. before I discovered toppers.  That was when I believed "firm must be better for my back".  Hopefully, one of those with 13 ga coils and the right stuffing will be my ticket to sleep!!  Still the optimist! smiley

Belive it or not, after months here and years at the mattress hunt, (frown)I just tracked down the thread that linked the four or five detailed "surgeries" by JImsocal, Sandman, and others.. and am about to take the plunge.  I have been all over the board with latex and memory, and am now convinced that my problem iies between the top of the springs and the top cover of the mattress... where the evil stuff lurks!  Thanks for all the valuable information.  Just must do the surgery when my wife isn't looking over my shoulder!

Here is my question: I have a firm Serta Perfect Sleeper Auburn Firm (continuous coil) .. but can pick up a firm Beautyrest for peanuts on craigslist.  I am inclined to pick up the firm Beautyrest because up till this (ouch) firm Serta (which I might sell for more...

Search "sandman" for is comments.  I believe he has stated he has lower back, has shared extensively, and recently described what he is using... and I believe is reasonably happy with what he as.  As I recall, he is using Sealy springs and several layers of latex, detailed in his post.

I am 170 lb 60 yr old male, back and side sleeper, lower back pain, and still searching, after 20 mattresses, thousands of dollars, perhaps 100 toppers and combos. Search shovel99 for comparative comments about toppers... though I admit I am not there yet.... so take my comments with a grain of salt.

However, I believe the solution for us back pain folks will be as firm as you can stand underneath and just enough soft on top... whichever kind of soft floats your boat... as iis necessary to accommodate your backbone.

I don't want to derail the thread, but how did you like the comfort the the Coco-Mat options compared to the all latex mattresses you tried?

I tried them too, same place as Lovegasoline here in NYC.  I like the buoyancy of a pure talalay mattress, and the Coco-mat takes some of the bounce away and added some stiffness with its layers of fiber between the layers of latex.  Other than I thought the latex felt quite similar to the other talalay mattresses on the floor, at least in the short time I had to try them all out.  But I'm sure it boils down to personal preference, whether you like a more lively sleep surface or not. Some people might like the Coco-Mat way better.

In any case I agree using a layer of  fiber sounds like a better idea than inserting a piece of plywood, if you're planning to experiment with things like that.
