One problem I had with the Sealy is that the foam ("Sealy foam") seemed too low of density to support me.  I measured one piece at 1.2 density.   So, it might have started off feeling firm, but by the end of the night I sunk way in.  It was also too hot, witth the PU foam tufted into the cover.   So, I feel that my current situation (using latex, memory foam and wool), while not perfect, is much better than the Sealy Reserve Cushion firm that I started with.  I still deal with a tradeoff between comfort and support, and there probably is no perfect solution.

You may have liked the Simmons due to the individual (and probably higher quality back then) coils.  Maybe they provided most of the support and body contouring, and the foam had less of a role.  Possibly the foam (or whatever they used) was better...

Re: Zoned Latex/Memory Foam, or Layers of each? Which is best? - shovel99

There is a wide range of "pillowtop" from a modest amount of just the right stuff.. to a really thick and soft one that will go flat, way too soon.

Most of us here are against pillowtops because many are too soft.. mostly pu foam, and will go flat with impressions in a year or less, ruining your sleep experience.  But today I lay on a Stearns Estate firm PT that felt pretty darn good.  It was more money than a Simmons World Class that felt almost the same, and I wanted the cheaper of the two because I expect to do surgery on it some time.

I just posted about surgery and particularly zoning to support hips.. search shovel99 or find my recent post. I am a huge believer that zoning is absolutely necessary to support the heavier hip region especially those of us with...

I just jumped in again here again, have been AWOL in swapping out a scuff mattress I have to keep.. and experimenting with my "surgery".  See my post as it relates to your efforts.

Several notes:  I found that as little as 1/2 inch of pretty soft poly... probably 20 ILD.. on top of the felt on top of my Serta "firm" springs took a substantial amount of the "bend" or accommodation out of my springs.  For my 170 lbs side sleeper that was a bad thing, so I took it out.  You are on the right track to "stiffen up" a layer above the springs.

Let me make a suggestion:  before plunking big dollars for "base foam" out of latex, experiment with similar firmness poly foam from

www.foamdistributing.com as I have.  Their HD 36  (for High Density)  Poly foam is quite firm.. and...

Definite breakthrough for lower back sufferers +additional tips for Matress Surgery!! Updated! - shovel99

When my last two stabs at buying a "cheap scuff and mark" warehouse mattress ($470 for Sealy reserve or Simmons BR World Class) failed, I quickly dragged the "carcass" of my Serta Perfect Sleeper  base for my mattress surgery into my basement from the yard and cleaned off the dirt smudges with Resolve Triple Oxi carpet cleaner.  Worked like a charm.

Then discovered the following;

The springs really did have some give.. not quite as stiff as I had remembered from only a few days ago.  So why was I not geting much or any backbone accommodation when lying on my side?  DISCOVERY:  I HAD PUT A FAIRLY FIRM.. BUT ONLY HALF INCH... LAYER OF PU FOAM ON THE BOTTOM LAYER... TO "PROTECT" THE NEXT LAYER.  AS CRAZY AS IT MAY SOUND, THIS LITTLE HALF INCH OF SEMI FIRM FOAM WAS ENOUGH TO CANCEL THE SPRINGS...

Buying "scuff and mark" matresses for 60-70% off.. and getting up to 10 exchanges for $69 each! - shovel99

Hi folks.  While I am back to custom DIY mattress through mattress surgery with a breakthrough for lower back sufferers to report, I am here to share my experience with buying really cheap from deep discounters offering "scuff and dirt mark" mattresses that they buy from the retailers and sell really cheap.  In the range of 40-70% (60-70% off)  retail.

About two years ago I discovered a local ( one mile from my house, by chance!) mattress warehouse seller by looking on craigslist under queen mattress.  Look for them in your local craigslist.. and for those not familiar with craigslist, the web address for each locale is as follows:   www.yourcityhere.craigslist.com   You then enter "queen mattress" in the search bar and it will list the free advertisements that craigslist offers.

I bought and exchanged ten mattresses from one very nice warehouse mattress store owner before giving up. ...

Sandman, thanks for the continued support.

This is one more chapter of "I have to laugh."

My current direction is to pick out and buy either a Simmons World Class or Sealy Reserve in plush, because in reviewing all my misadventures back 4-5 years of "new mattress"... they have all been either firm or on the firm side of plush.... not accommodating my side sleep... wake up in pain.

So I track down a "scuff and mark" wholesaling mattress store selling all the S brands and a pretty wide selection through Craigslist and drive 30 miles out to the Burbs of Atlanta.

Most of their product is in stacks in their warehouse with broken AC.. doors open, at least 90 degrees.  The owner son pulls what you want to lay on down off the stack and you lie on it on the...

Thanks for the additional help, Sandman.

After another frustrating night of no progress, I have concluded that I would not "get there from here" on the Serta linked spring.

I went

Here in the ATL mattress wholesalers are offering invenstory scuffs, closeouts for dirt cheap.  I went to the supplier with the most inventory with the intent of bringing home a Simmons World Class which would have foam edge casing if I have to "operate" again, and compared a Simmons World Class and Sealy Reserve in cushion firm.

The Too Hard from my firm serta could either be coming from (1) too stiff coils which I now know that the coil gauge is thicker for stiffer mattresses (one of the many lies of mattress salesmen: the springs are all the same.. only the comfort layers change) or (2) poicketed coils can accommodate...

Report 2.    First night as indicated was not quite so Yayyyy.  The bed was firmer than I want, not much of an improvement on 5 years of mattress hell.  I was overly optimistic that I would hit a homer first time with this new bat.  Or is this the new home plate?

Soul searching moments: "Now you have gone and done it!  You can't even sell this crappy mattress to anyone!" (Well, that is what my sweet wife said before I started....)

Comparing the start of Post Op Surgery to the beginning of the Mattess Trail five or six years ago, I thought "this is asinine.. I am going out to buy a Beautyrest".... and spent an hour or so on the Dark Side (Simmons factory outlet one mile from my house.)  I almost brought home a classic BR mattress only for the rich amount of...

I have really given up on all of the major brands, because they are all too much foam piled onto a spring, and are single side, and I want an old fashioned 2 sided innerspring mattress with not frills and years of durabuility.   People are ditching their big name sets after only 3 years or less.   Complaints abound about Simmons Beautyrest softening up too much within weeks.  I'm looking at The Original Mattress Factory, Carlisle Bedding, and Imperial Bedding, because those are the smaller companies in my region.

Need advice on mattress - Newbie
Sep 12, 2010 5:45 PM
Hi, i'm about to purchase a new mattress. I visited my local The Brick and found the Simmons Beautyrest Emerald Legacy to be quite comfortable yet affordable at $899. Apparently it has about 1000 coils and the pillowtop layer is composed of memory foam and latex. The salesman also offered a pillow if i did not want the box spring. Has anyone had any experience with this mattress and would anyone recommend it?

Here's a link to The Brick's page for this mattress. http://www1.thebrick.com/brickb2c/jsp/catalog/product.jsp?id=LEGACYPQP&navAction=jump&navCount=0&gaTrack=MattressHotdeal_B
