They all seem to be rated a bit differently, I sent a lot back before I ended up with something usable on my bed. Originally bought as a complete set locally from a company called Land and Sky which i would recommened against. sent the top back since i was "sinking through" when laying on my side, and it sat at their wherehouse for a couple months before i got a "Medium" piece back which was too hard, then my search started.

ended up with 2 other pieces on top of the "firm" foam box spring, One from some place in utah on the bottom that was rated ILD 20 that was not soft enough, and a 3 Inch 19 ILD from sleeplikeabear that was what i was looking for - soft. I tried a 1" 14 ILD on top from SLAB and that was...

Actually, I'm now fairly sure that the mattress is one of the confounding variables.

If I take all the soft latex and the fiber bed off the mattress -- which I did -- and leave only the medium-ILD latex on there -- which I did -- and I still wake up in a sinkhole -- which I do -- then the mattress has to be the problem, right?

(I suppose it could be the latex, but I've got an inch of N3/27 ILD, bought a couple months ago, an inch of 32 ILD Talatech, bought recently, and an inch of 24 ILD Talatech, bought 2 years ago but still in good shape as far as I can tell. None of that should be cratering. I...

Well, that makes sense. Thanks for the info.

Sure wish I'd known about that CSD tool months ago. Although even now that I know about it and have used it -- twice -- I'm a tad lost. The zoning I'd need for back sleeping is different from the zoning I'd need for side sleeping, and lately I've been sleeping on my back a lot more.

Both designs start with 2" of 14 ILD under the shoulders -- and I have 14ILD (in a full-size piece) and don't actually like it. Thought I did, at first, but would prefer 19 or so now.

I needed soft near my shoulders...

Back again.... reporting on my unfortunate excursion into latex-topper-layering OCD.

(I've been experimenting for a couple of months, so this is gonna get long and might be a little disjointed.)

I have tried every possible permutation of the layering materials I have, and tried some zoning, and have yet to find anything that works as a comfort layer on top of my innerspring mattress.

Here are the latex layers I had (not necessarily all used at the same time) before I tried the zoning:

  • 2" 14-17 ILD natural Talalay latex, bought from a local mattress manufacturer (I'll refer to this piece as 14 ILD; it is ridiculously soft, & quite fragile)
  • 1" 14 ILD, from the same vendor
  • 1" 24 ILD Talatech,...

The fact that the only complaints seem to be that it's too soft for anything but stomach sleeping make it sound like what I need and the price is right.

I think the solid latex pillows (like the overstock one) are more bouncy than the shredded ones.  Also, talatech is a blended latex, so the smell to me is a bit more chemical than 100% natural latex.  100% natural also has a bit of smell (reduced when I use a pillow...

Yeah, Custom Sleep Design's tool is cool, but their prices are amazing - I was quoted $3425 for a queen.   I can buy, test, and even discard a lot of latex layers from FBM and others and still be well below that.

My main problem is finding latex soft enough for the shoulder area (and maybe for an overall top comfort layer).   The softest FBM has is 20ILD, and I'm pretty convinced it's not really that soft; SLAB sent me some Talatech samples, and although the FBM 20ILD is softer than the SLAB 32 ILD, it is considerably firmer than the SLAB 19ILD.     So I'm wondering where I can find something that is significantly softer than the FBM 20 ILD without paying roughly $200 per 1" queen-size layer (SLAB's price).   Any ideas ?...

Brylane Home 1.5" topper - I called them and got no add'l info, I was told they don't know the maker or ILD, but I know some of you have it and might be able to help.

Talatech 19 ILD 1" (clearance section of SLAB)

FBM 20 ILD 1" (I could also go with the 2")

I'm hopeful someone out there has experience with all 3 and can help me compare them.

Thanks!

SLAB folks told me they had some anecdotal...

I read on the forum that the Brylane latex topper is made by Natura.  I emailed them yesterday.  They answered back stating that their toppers are talalay latex and have a firmness of 23ILD (I neglected to ask the density).

I went ahead and ordered 2 (I'm building a full and a king).  I couldn't pass up the clearance price. :)
