Re: Finding a good Latex mattress in the Store, especially the LA area, AND know anything about Aireloom Luxury Latex? - cloud9

Most S-brand latex mattresses are not all latex. They feature a latex core --sometimes all synthetic as in the case of the Sealy Springfree-- and a "comfort" layer made of the same low grade, quick to sag PU you'll find in a standard innerspring mattress. Be sure to inquire about the construction of any latex mattress you are interested in. Don't take the salesman's word for it. Most of the time they are misinformed or don't really know their inventory. Call or e-mail the manufacturer directly for information.

Many stores in the LA area carry Englander latex mattresses. They have a natural Talalay latex core of 30 ILD with a softer comfort layer. You might want to check it out. Very few stores carry more than a couple of latex mattresses since they are considered more of a specialty item, but most stores can order a specific mattress as long as...

S-brand mattresses are often sold under different names by every store that carries them. That way retailers can claim exclusivity and prevent comparison shopping for the best price--which is why you won't find models listed on the Sealy website.

The Springfree line has a synthetic Dunlop latex core. The comfort layers are made of PU which will soften, sag and take body impressions just as quickly as any other mattress. For less money you could buy an all latex mattress from Flobeds or SleepEZ and have the option of adjusting the comfort levels for each partner....

Thanks Lynn and Sabra - do you have your Springfree on a solid foundation or a boxspring? Sealy's newish Purembrace line at Macys is supposedly 100% synthetic talalay, but less of it and more cheapo foam. Perhaps it has better quality latex than the Springfree but I'm put off by the extra foam and the higher price... ho hum... looks like I'm on the floor for a bit longer.

The effect of the foundation is still confounding me. I understand the basic physics of it as Mr Pointy explained but it's the dramatic difference in the feel of the mattress that I don't get. I didn't check what the Savvy Rest I tried in the store was resting on but according to their website they only put them on solid foundations, not boxsprings, which they claim will contribute to sagging, so I assume the store model...

Also try the following config (bottom to top): Firm, medium, topper (dont use the soft layer at all)....

I promised an update on our post-topper experience. First, the topper itself (2.8" of talalay, 22 ILD I think) feels very nice and cushy. I read some posts on this site which described talalay as springier than dunlop with more push-back but my experience is quite the opposite. The topper feels much softer than the 20 ILD dunlop layer although slightly less supportive. I guess this proves how important it is to try both kinds out for yourself if you can.

We re-set the mattress to firm-medium-soft, zipped it up and then put the topper on. This felt far too soft and we sank way down. Understandable when you think we were lying on just under 6" of soft latex. We then tried the soft, firm, medium (bottom to top) with the topper on. This felt much better. I'm convinced the base needs a soft layer directly above it. We slept last night on this combo. No surprises that...

Hello, my husband and I are in desperate need of a new mattress. I have been doing lots of research and have decided on latex. (which I had never heard of prior to reading this site!). I have seen the reviews by people for SleepEz and FloBeds. I have also visited local stores and found that Aireloom and Sealy have latex mattresses (luxury latex and SpringFree). They have a latex core and mixed latex and foam. It is nice to be able to see the mattress and experience it as opposed to ordering it online. I am wondering if anyone has experience with Aireloom, Sealy or Englander latex mattresses. There does not seem to be a huge amount of review info on them. I just want to make the best decision possible and hopefully get something that will last for a while. It is a little...

Hey Bill, wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?

My post was entirely reasonable, and there's nothing wrong with telling someone to try a bed before they buy it.

Just to correct your misinformation, Sealy's SpringFree mattress has a latex foam core, not polyurethane. Also, companies like Aireloom are not and should not be lumped together with the "S" companies. E.g. Aireloom does not use the same cheap Leggett & Platt coil springs used by all of the "S" companies, they use much better (time-tested and truly natural) comfort layer materials (cotton, wool etc), and in their midrange and high-end lines, latex is properly put *under* these other materials. In some models it serves just as a support layer, not a comfort layer. So a categorical claim that "you want to be as close to the latex as possible" is also incorrect....

Free box spring from US Mattress? - JHeatherton

While looking at a Sealy Springfree Whistlewood latex queen bed from US Mattress for $2519 they list a free box spring. While looking at platfom beds on the same site they give you a list of mattresses for those beds. They offer the above mattress for $2266 which of course would lead you to believe the box spring really isn't free. I emailed the US Mattress asking to explain this and to also see if they would honor the complete set for $2266. So now I wait and see.

This set is sold at various stores online for the same price of $2519. I wonder if Sealy mandates that price. I also believe that is the same bed as the Sealy Springfree Fairway Dune that also sells at various stores on line and in stores for the same price of $2519. I tried to email Sealy about this but you won't...

Price controlled? - JHeatherton

I guess it's pretty common that manufacturers bed models have different names at different stores making it nearly impossible to compare pricing. On the Stearns and Foster website I couldn't even find different models. But I did find a Sealy model that is offered at several places. It's the Sealy SpringFree™ Fairway Dunes. Our local Raymour and Flanigan furniture sells the queen for $2519. It just so happens that I found it on line at several other mattress companies. It's also $2519. Does Sealy and other mattress companies mandate the selling price? A lot of companies do share this practice on their products. I also noticed that these mattress stores pretty much all say "We will not be under sold"!!

I also noticed that these major manufacturers latex beds have more pads than the generics like SleepEz. They just use more/different layers of thinner latex/foam. This gets more and more confusing!!...
