Cheap memory foam + topper? - gxbry
Nov 25, 2011 10:33 PM
I'm trying to decide what to buy, and there's too much choice.  I've tried lying on various memory foam, latex, spring, etc, mattresses and they all feel "fine" to me.  We are in our late 20's, 120lbs and 160lbs, so we're relatively light.  I think we do prefer the softer/plushy beds, at least when lying on them for a minute, so "normal" leaning towards plush would be good.  My current thinking is to buy an 8" base bed and then a topper, so that the topper can be easily changed out should "indentations" form.  My current thinking would be:

I appreciate the post above, but like I say to everyone, be careful selecting a mattress that is very plush, or has a lot of give, or that has a lot of memory foam allowing hips and shoulders to sink deeply into it.  I know the Luxe is quite a plush mattress because it has quite a bit of memory foam.  Not that that is bad per se, but too plush can cause some problems.   I chose an iComfort Revolution which is a very plush mattress.  Every one in the family agreed that Revolution was very soft and allowed them to sink a lot into it,....

It's not that memory foam changes during the night and keeps sinking down like some claim.  You can know in the store if the mattress is too soft.

the effects too soft mattress are subtle.  It took a few weeks...

All I can tell you is I love my Tempurpedic Cloud (not Supreme, not Luxe) mattress.  This after trying a Select Sleep (local maker) for 3 weeks, an entry level Stearns and Foster (4 weeks), an iComfort memory foam (4 weeks, too soft) and a layered all latex for 4 weeks.  The Tempurpedic is very supportive.  There is no way the foundation could possibly sag one fraction of inch, and I've seen other new box springs sag a good 1/4 to 1/2 inch within weeks (ahem, Serta icomfort box spring) ..   Seriously, this happened because of the Serta foundation design.  If your foundation sags, your mattress will sag guaranteed.  Also the Tempurpedic is very, very comfortable, doesn't sleep hot.  Only downside, there has been a slight odor.  I don't notice it anymore at 60 days....

1)  Original poster - are you using a comforter as a top layer?   If so, shelve it.  Go get a thin quilt instead.  Quilts are typically about a 1/4" thick or so.  They work well and are much cooler.

2) Not sure why you guys just don't want memory foam.   Sleeping too warm is a complete non-issue on my 60 day old TP Cloud.  In September, there were a bunch of nights where room was 80 F.  It was a little warm, but I did ok.  If the room is 65 F to high 70's, it's still great.  They have single or dual air flow 'systems' which seem to work fine for me.   TP Cloud is best mattress for me in 5 mattresses I had in house this year (Select Sleep, Stearns and Foster, iComfort, SleepEZ and now TP).

I hope this doesn't sound too much like a salesman, but since I have actually used this myself with the results that I describe in my presentation, I will re-state them here and hopefully to your benefit:

  • (this is not that point, it is just a story) I know a guy who made the claim that where he slept, had a pocket that did not come from "conditioning" (or lack of it) but was a definite bubble where his back was. He ended up getting a replacement (he had the Rhapsody for  2-1/2 years). There was no visible impression when not in the bed, but they ended up with an inspector making the determination that this guy's claim was correct.
  • I tell customers about how to condition a mattress (any) to make it feel more like the one in the store...

I have been in the mattress industry about 5 years and like some of my colleagues (definitely not all) I find much more joy in having fewer exchanges and a greater number of phone calls from my clients 2-3 months after purchase saying, "I really am sleeping so much better! Thank-you!" To get to this point in my Sleep Consultant career, here is my method (which you should expect to take you 45 - 90 minutes depending on your needs, issues, differences of opinion between you and your partner, finances, etc.

  • Triple Choice - Most mainstream stores set up beds in three's. A Firm, a Soft or Medium and a Pillow-Top. Finding which of these three you like best will help you eliminate 2/3 of the...

When I used to sell Simmons as one of my brands, my experience was based on the line-up I had at the time:

All Beautyrest...

Studio - 713 Coils

Classic - 800 Coils

Anniversary - 850 Coils

World Class - 1000 Coils

Based on the coil counts (within THAT particular brand) I would direct my heavier customer to the Anniversary or the World Class depending on how they slept. The baisc idea is that the more coils (again, within the same brand or line) will provide more support because each coil has to work less due to the extra coils: i.e. if you fall down the steps, do you want 10 hands reaching out to catch you or 20 hands? I also used to sell Select Comfort and will attest (even though I had more warranty problems than...

Tempurpedic Contour: Too soft in the morning - sumu
Dec 25, 2011 12:04 PM
Hello,

I just got my Tempurpedic Contour (Standards, not Select or Signature) two weeks ago and the mattress is soft like a sponge in the morning. My back hurts more every day.

Seems that my body temperature is making the mattress so soft that it is sagging in like an old worn out coil mattress in the morning.

I always felt comfortable with my friends' Contour Select, but never slept the whole night on it. Also my friend is 130lbs, I am 200lbs.

This is supposed to be the firmest Tempurpedic, correct? Has anybody got a similar experience and solved it with a mattress cover that insulates the mattress?

When I go to bed at night it is fine - it just gets softer and softer during the night.

Thanks

Re: What is the consensus opinion on Sleep Number beds? - LaVieEnRose

The Sleep Number Bed sucks. There are many more negative than positive reviews. I had the misfortune of buying one and experienced the very common indentation problem almost immediately--so they reluctantly sent me a new mattress--after making lame excuses and trying to blame the issue on me--perhaps I wasn't inflating it properly?!? It was a brand new bed. No. The first mattress was definitely defective. The second one took a couple of years to form the crater in which I now sleep--so after 7 years of neck and back pain I'm finally giving up and getting rid of the bed.

In summary, here are the issues I've experienced--and according to the many reviews I've read--so have a lot of other Sleep Number buyers:

1.  "Mattress" does NOT re-gain it's shape once you get up; even if you diligently inflate it every day--which is what they suggest...

If you can return the bed, you should consider it.  I bought a Rhapsody (with my heart set on it!) and within 1 month, started getting back aches.

I've never had back problems in my life, and I slept on a Sealy Posturpedic Ultra Firm mattress for nearly 20 years!  The same mattress.  Never a back problem.

So I quickly took advantage of the retailers comfort exchange and swapped for their firmest, the Contour Select.  I couldn't reasonably opt out of Tempurpedic b/c

I had stupidly bought the mattress with a non-refundable Tempurpedic adjustable frame (and quite frankly, it's silly to use that frame with a spring mattress.)  So the Contour has been much firmer, but hotter.  And now that I'm one month into it....backaches.  Again.  Now it's mid-upper back, in lieu of the lower back pain I had from the Rhapsody.
