Does anyone on this forum happen to know what "smartlatex" really is? Just curious why they don't just call it latex. Must be synthetic?

Any help deciphering this buzzword would be appreciated! Myself, I'd prefer it if they'd call a spade a spade, and quit giving things names like "smartlatex." Between that and all the other marvelous undefined enhancements being touted in the mattress industry, like they're supposed to mean something and that we're supposed to know what they mean, I'm getting the shudders. I'm about ready to make my own mattress out of straw.

I did some recent investigating of foams and mattresses from Sealy/S&F and Simmons.

The Sealy literature says that "smart latex" is latex that has soft latex poured over firmer latex, so really it's similar to 2 pieces...

I bought a wool mattress and had many of the same questions, and was frustrated

that there were not a lot of reviews available, so hope this feedback helps.....(please note this is my opinion only)

In my previous thread "Latex - getting it right" I recounted how
with the latex layers we had to work with, we never could get it right!
The layers we had started with were probably too soft to begin with,
and the bed hurt our backs. With more time and firmer layers, it might
have worked very well, but time ran out. So the search for a new
mattress continued.

I love my new cheap mattress :-) - TC2334

How many people can say that?!    I wanted Original Mattress Factory's Orthopedic Ultra Firm.   Still want that, and might buy it later.  For now, I needed an ultra firm innerspring with little padding.  Didn't want to spend the $950 or so to get the OMF set in queen with split box spring until I move to more permanent digs.

Bought:    Therapedic "Happiness" firm  1-sided queen size mattress,  #08-00055 manufactured 12/19/08,      Therapedic, Orwell OH  44076

This was a new mattress, queen size, that was sitting around in a furniture store.   It's single-sided, but I only paid $350 for it, so I'll compromise.

Pros:

ultra firm feel

really great edge stiffening, and I do mean great

motion dampening is acceptable;  not much shimmy;  motion is dampened fast

not much foam in it

cover is attractive...

I'm in NW PA.   I like a really ultra firm mattress.  The two current models that I liked the best are Imperial Bedding #640 (Huntington, WV), and Original Mattress Factory (several factories but probabably not any in TX) Orthopedic Ultra Firm with the edge supports.   What I ended up buying is a discontiuned Therapedic (Orwell, OH) single sided that I got for only $350 brand new in queen size.   It is extra firm and has about the same ultra firm feel as the OFM set.  The store told me that the set had originally sold for $800.  (The mattress I bought was made in 2008, and probably didn't sell just because it is so firm and the older population here goes for the pilow tops.)   The OMF set was going to be $949 + $50 delivery for the set with a split box.  The Imperial set would have been about...

I agree that the zoning custom sleep design uses is pretty genius.  I also tried regular layering.  The problem was if I had the latex as soft as I needed it for my shoulder comfort (I'm a side sleeper, too), I would hammock under the hips.  With the layers softer under the shoulders, they sink in just enough to keep your spine perfectly straight when your hips have more support where most of your weight is.  I think that working with the orthopedic surgeon they happened on a great and unique idea.  Bob told me this surgeon is quite devoted to alignment and comfort to the extent that he has his own pillows made to a specified shape/size and that they're very expensive because they need to be cut from a thick slab of foam meaning a whole layer is used.  We're glad we happened upon CSD, as I think...
Long post about my bedding tribulations and final relief through our purchase from Custom Sleep Design - Trigger

I spent weeks reading through posts on the 'what's the best mattress forum' as well as any other websites I could before I took the plunge to buy our new bed.  Furthermore, I've had our new bed for a few months, so I think that the 'new purchase glow' has worn off enough to allow me to give a balanced review of our new bed.  I thought I'd put the review here as well as in the review section in case there are questions or anyone wants to enter into dialog.

First a quick history:

I'm a woman in my mid. thirties who has had chronic pain issues that have been worsening significantly for the last few years.  Aside from a bad choice of bed, I may just have a  predisposition exacerbated by a couple of MVA's, and postural issues....

I just test drove the PLB mattresses today.  I tried a 8" firm (Pamper) with and without a 2" topper as well as a 10" medium firmness (Nature).  The 8" with the topper felt very nice.  It had lots of support with a nice cushion layer on top.  I liked the feel for sleeping on my side.  Now I know what all the fuss is about the soft toppers for comfort!  The 8" firm + 2 soft topper had more cushiony feel than the 10" medium.

They had other beds at the store and since I was there, I tried them.  Here are my impressions since they are not the standard latex type mattress.

Magniflex, earth friendly memory foam from Italy.  I sunk into it some.  Not as much as with a Tempur, but more than latex.  Oddly enough, I did not like the feel of...

2-Sided Mattresses Are Everywhere - Except Where I Live! - Bostoner

I live in the southern half of New Jersey.  I can easily
drive to towns like Cherry Hill and Moorestown.  Both
areas have hundreds of furniture and mattress stores.
In fact, I'm surrounded by many other townships that
have huge shopping districts.

I thought I had died and gone to mattress heaven when
I discovered "The Original Mattress Factory."  They have
hundreds of different models.  Almost all are flippable or
two-sided.  Their Orthopedic line has 12¾ gauge coils.
They have an extra and ultra firm mattress in this line.
Exactly what I was searching for.  If I want a less hard
mattress I'll buy a quality topper from a site like "The
Foam Factory."  They have 5LB density toppers.  That
is...
Tempurpedic - MinnesotaGirl

Hi folks...

I posted a question on this forum a few weeks ago & wanted to say "Thank You" to all of you who gave me really well thought-out, detailed, & helpful answers.

I've been searching off & on for a new mattress for more than a year.  I'm sleeping on an 11 yr old Sealy Posturepedic innerspring mattress (NOT a pillowtop)  that is soooooooooo dipped that it looks like a soup bowl.  I'm literally sleeping in a giant hole.  It's killing me.  So, that's it.  I have to get a mattress, any mattress, because anything would be better than this.

So, I would like to know >>  If price were NO object & someone offered to buy you ANY mattress you wanted, would you get a Tempurpedic, or not??  Because it seems like what holds a lot of people back from getting a Tempurpedic is the OUTRAGEOUSLY HIGH PRICE.

Original Mattress Factory? Pillowtops vs Talalay Latex Foam vs Tempurpedic Memory Foam? - MinnesotaGirl

Has anyone ever bought a mattress from the Original Mattress Factory?  Consumer Reports rates it 2nd only to Tempurpedic for customer satisfaction.  I was going to get a Tempurpedic bed, but they are SO expensive & I am worried it will sleep too hot & that I won't like it because half the people don't seem to like the way it feels.

I am currently sleeping on an innerspring Sealy PosturePedic bed that is 11 yrs old & has a massive dip in the middle.  I REALLY need a new bed!!  It has been giving me low back muscle pain & hip muscle pain because the dip is causing my back & hip muscles to pull all night long.  I was told that as a skinny person (5 ft 7 in tall & 125 lbs)...
