Re: back pain caused by new mattress and latex, advice needed please! - Batman

Combination side and stomach sleepers usually always have back issues.  This is nothing new.  If your pain is in your lower back, it is because the person ends up in between positions and twisted.  Usually shoulder pressure by too shallow of a comfort layer makes the person want to twist or switch positions to relieve the pressure on their shoulder.   Try a mattress with a  deeper comfort layer.  With your lower bodyweight you will need a lot of depth of comfort and support.  Stay away from the plush firm and firm versions of mattresses.  These sets have hard pads over the coil systems that will create pressure in your shoulders.

If your pain is in between your shoulder blades then your are holding your torso up while you sleep to allow yourself to breath.

It could be a combination of both....

This is what I have.(below link) Only I have LuraFlex coils with latex layers and one layer of high density firm PU foam as a base. I prefer the feel of springs and I like the fact that I can unzip my mattress and move around the latex layers as needed. Do you happen to live anywhere near this store?

I would say that almost all mattresses are made with Leggett & Platt coil systems, as well as other components. Sure, there are some like McRoskey who manufacture their own. But, most companies use those made by L&P. And, they also make the pocketed coils for Simmons. The mattress companies won't necessarily show the name Leggett & Platt. You can always ask the mattress salesperson (IF they even know!) Here is something I found online:

"Leggett & Platt makes innersprings for nearly all of the mattress companies, so essentially it is the same coil system in all of them. Leggett &
Platt is a diversified manufacturer that conceives, designs and produces a broad variety of engineered components and
products for customers worldwide. While Leggett & Platt may not be a familiar name to you, chances are you sleep on a bed

Also, cotton fiber attracts mold and dust mites. The woman from McRoskey told me that their mattress is not for someone who has a lot of moisture or mold in their home, particularly in the bedroom.

Re: Body Depressions - Latex vs. Coil Spring Bed - mccldwll

As I've opined before, that's how all coil mattresses should be made/offered. My guess is that basic support system decision possibly could be made based on weight/body type/sleep position preference (though original choice apparently wasn't firm enough for BB). Further adjustments/fine tuning probably could be done through comfort layers. Not as much of a crapshoot as sealed systems. Here's a link for another custom mattress manufacturer only one time zone away. They can use latex, but are sealed systems: http://www.antiquemattress.com/. But, since NC is/was the furniture capital of the U.S., there may be shops in your neck of the woods doing the same thing as BB's California shop. And again, once you have a good idea of the coil system that works for you, have a mattress made with almost zero padding (nothing which will permanently compress) and a basic, non-padded cover. Then construct your own...

Some Advice - MattressSalesman

Next to buying a tombstone, this is probably the hardest decision you have to make.  Sadly, there are many people in my industry who take advantage of people and give all of us a bad name.  I will try to remedy that with some honest advice.

For the most part, the advice given on the welcome page is solid.  Follow those guidelines and your experience will be a good one.  As far as the types of beds, you generally have firm, plush, and pillowtop.  For many years, people were told the firmer the better.  This could not be further from the truth!  That myth led to generations of back problems.  It drives me crazy when a person comes in and says my doctor or my chiropractor told me to get the firmest bed you have.  I usually tell them to get a new doctor!  For the people who do not walk out on...

Latex Mattress Confusion! - Savvy Rest - Sleepez - Flobeds??? - cmom05

Hi - I am new to the forum and have read most posts and reviews out there on Latex Mattresses. It has been super helpful to me, but I am also now confused as well!!

My Back Story:
We recently bought a Tempurpedic Deluxe model. Felt comfy in the store - but I just haven't been able to get used to it and it feels like I am sleeping on a ROCK! (We have had it about 6/7 weeks now - so we are within our window to return it so it is going back!) My husband likes it, but would only rate it a comfort level of 7 (1 being worst and 10 being best) For the price paid, I would certainly hope it would be more comfortable than that for him! Plus he has been getting headaches everyday since we got the mattress, and I have had headaches on...
Help me choose a mattress or topper - Sleep_Deprived
Jun 17, 2009 9:50 PM
Hi everyone,

I'm searching for either a topper or possibly a new mattress that will help me feel comfortable.  I have a severe type of rheumatoid arthritis and am currently "sleeping" on an 8 year old S**** pillowtop mattress.  The innerspring feels like its in good shape, but the pillowtop has seen its better days.  No impressions, it just doesn't cushion me anymore.  I've tried a cheap 2" 4lb memory foam topper and I felt like I was sinking to the bottom of a pit.  It really hurt my back too.  I've ordered a 1" 7lb topper from Big O hoping it will be more supportive and have less to fall into.  I'm thinking the pillowtop is causing the pitlike feeling though by taking up empty space.

Assuming I should try and save this mattress, will the 7lb topper work?  Should I exchange it for a latex topper since they're firmer and...
