There is also the Venus 8lb. memory foam.  However, everyone that has bought it found that it is really 4lb.   So, that would be a gamble unless you are willing to return it.

They have a few other types at overstock, but I have not tried them so won't comment.

You say "I am looking for a little different "feel" and a slightly firmer surface."   I don't think you will get a firmer surface by adding memory foam.  Between the 2, the Sensus is more dense, supportive and firm.  The main drawback being that it sleeps a bit warmer.  If you mainly want to add softness with more breathability, then the mem-cool is probalby better.

Unfortunately, I have not found the perfect combination of density, support and coolness.  Maybe hard...

Looks good, Sandman.   I hope you find a combination that works for you.   I assume this topper is 2.5 inches thick?    I wonder if SAMS stocks it in their stores?   Maybe I'll check on Friday when I'm there, but so far I'm happy with my 1 inch Sensus and doubt I'll get anything else very soon.    I LOVE the cat photos!   We too are a cat family at my house.

Aerus Natural 5lb. Impressions - sandman

I received the Aerus on Tuesday, and after one day airing out I tried it last night.  Sam's club shipped it one day after I ordered it and it took 6 days (including the weekend) to get here from Indiana.  I believe it was dropped shipped directly from Foamex.

I weighed it in the plastic bag it came in at 35 lb.s.  So, slightly more than 5lb. density based on my calculation.  Sizing seems pretty good (I did not measure), a little smaller than 1 of my pieces of latex.

Initial hand feel is that the surface seems slightly rougher than the Sensus, and it springs back a little quicker.   The bamboo cover is 60% polyester and 40% bamboo rayon.

There are some of the usual off gassing issues.  Probably less than other memory foams I have purchased.  Maybe due to the "natural" process.

It should breathe better than some other foams (their Sensus for example).  That should help keep it from getting as hot.  I don't think I would consider any foam to be cool.  They all heat up due to body heat.  If they breath though, it seems that they can dissipate the heat better.  I would not call it "natural".  Petroleum byproducts still go into the production.

Supposedly Aerus comes with a 10 yr. warranty (see sleepwarehouse and some other places).   Not sure how you would collect though.   It should last several years.  I have some memory foam from Costco that still seems good after a number of years.

There might be an initial breaken period, were it loses some firmness from when new (I think DianeK has noted this on Costco foam).   Denser should last longer.  4lb. should be okay, and 5lb might last longer.

I have read through the forums about Sensus and Venus from Overstock.com and it seems a lot of people say it is not the real Stuff, but others seem more than happy with it.  It is made by a company called "Comfort Dreams" which I can't find much if any info on.  What is the difference from the two below?  To me they are the same except for the Price, but is Overstock pulling a clever one?

How long does this stuff last?  A few years?

Also is Mem-cool on Overstock relatively the same as Aerus?

Thanks Jim

I think I have decided to buy the 2.5" Natural Aerus 5lb and try it on my bed, if for some strange reason I am feeling great it will be temporary solution...or permanent I guess.  Just makes sense to start there and work down from there.  Just have to order it and wait a month or so :(   The joys of living on an island.  Hopefully I can get it from Sam's club, its about $100 cheaper than Amazon.

I was looking more closely at memory foam and I am torn between the 2.5 inches of 5lb Natural Aerus from Sam's/Amazon, or 1" or 2" of Sensus and 1" of Mem-Cool from overstock. The later is more modular, but the Aerus serves both purposes of being cool-er and also a higher 5lb density.

So I finally got to try out some mattresses out for the first time ever.  It was a pretty interesting experience.   Most of the places I went were pretty car salesmen oriented, but that is neither here nor there.

I went to three stores; my goal was not to try to buy anything, but rather to get a feel for what is firm, medium, soft, and what is in the mattress to make them such.  I plan to make a modular bed and really wanted to get a feel for what all the numbers felt like so when I order I will be getting the correct firmness and materials etc… I am not going the route of a spring bed, obviously.  My objective at this point is to make a bed that I can change in case I don’t like it, but with minimal money...

I have an old cheap outlet-store type mattress that needs replacing.  After spending a few hours at different stores, we decided to go for a memory foam mattress.  And after spending hours looking at the Amazon, Overstock, Costco, etc mattresses, it's all so confusing and the reviews are all so mixed.  So, I think the DIY route is the best way to have flexibility to experiment and get quality.  The mattress I'm thinking of building is something along the lines of:

2" 4.5lb memory foam ($115 from foamdistributing, $119 Aerus from Amazon)
2" 5.5lb memory foam ($157 from foamdistributing, $140 Sensus from Overstock)
1.5" egg crate for cooling ($33 from foamdistributing HD36-R)
  3" medium density foam ($122 from foamdistributing HD36-HQ, $83 for HD36-R, $72 for HD36-R from FBM)
  4" max...

Personal opinion ... and you will have many others from many others ... Is that I would go for latex either with a latex core or an innerspring core ... and this for me would be a matter of budget.

If you are comfortable with memory foam and know that you really like it, then I would go there as well ... but I'm not ... even though I do like the feel of certain combinations (mentioned in another thread).

So the comparison would really be between latex and memory foam in terms of what feels good to you..... just to simplify matters ... Unless of course you want to go in the direction of an "old style mattress" with cotton, horsehair, wool etc over springs ... and that's the topic of another thread here.
