While this may be a good shortcut way to describe the effect of firm talalay, it's not really accurate. Gravity is constant. Period. Your weight is a force (F=MA). ANY surface you contact exerts a force equal and opposite to your weight.

Thanks for the science, but subjectively speaking it is true. After sleeping on a firm Talalay mattress (32/38/44 ILD) for four days not only was I sore all over, I woke up feeling like someone had been sitting on my ribcage all night. On the other hand I have slept on innerspring mattresses that were only slightly less hard than a block of wood, and while they were horribly uncomfortable...

Hi Sabra!

I'm glad things are going well for you with your new mattress! Don't you just love it when you wake up without the nagging back and hip pain? I think you're right about needing another type of pillow now. I tried latex, but they were just too uncomfortable for me. I'm back to down. I like being able to squish it to conform to my neck and head.

I totally agree with you about doing the research here and how we should give newbies a break when they ask questions. Frankly, I've even learned things from their queries that I might not have known before.

By the way, how do I access the old forum again? I used to post there a lot, but can't locate the URL in my Favorite Places.

The savings is tempting. My concern, though some dismiss it, is a science experiment between the latex and PU layer. IIRC, water loss during sleep roughly a pint. Latex breathes, but PU doesn't. In the desert SW, might be OK, but above 50% relative humidity in other climes could be problematic. And don't count on dehumidification through AC. The vast majority of AC systems are oversized for the space with the result that temperature reaches target way before sufficient moisture is removed so easily end up w/ 60%+ RH. Not good....
Zoning latex - mccldwll

Here's an earlier post of mine:

"If you are committed to making latex work (durability, comfort, anti-allergen) you may want to try the masochists route and build a zoned mattress, starting with a topper. My 3"/36ILD Talatech has arrived but still haven't unpacked it and replaced the temporary 3" PU piece run latitudinally in hip region. The PU has worked well--absolutely no lower back pain for 2 weeks with present set-up (4" roughly 20 ILD for legs/shoulders and 1" 20 ILD over 3" guesstimated 33 ILD PU for roughly 3' hip region). It's not rocket science. IMO, this is how latex mattresses should me constructed. Being able to vary the sides is nice, but offering variable support for various regions more important. In fact, I would bet that a king mattress consisting of: 10 strips of 3" x 14" x 80" and 2 strips of 3" x 10" x 80" of...
Neck pain from old pillow after sleeping on new latex mattress; TWO NEW QUESTIONS...HELP! - Sabra

I'm sleeping so good on my new latex mattress--it's been six days and I have no more back and hip pain. But I do wake up with neck pain. I didn't  realize when I changed to a mattress with more give, the old latex pillow would feel too thick/firm for my neck and head placement. I think I will have to get a thinner or softer latex pillow so my head is not up quite so high. On my hard old spring mattress, my thick latex pillow was just right. I'm going to check out the JC Penney zoned latex pillow some of you guys have mentined in the past. I'm not sure how they zone it, but hopefully it will be what the doctor ordered.

I am new in this forum and I do really appreciate the teaching and sharing of experiences that goes on here. I took a LOT...

Best Organic Latex Mattress?? - azba

Hi Everyone,

I think I over-researched and now am confused on which are the best natural latex beds (in my price-range). My ideal bed at this point is a triple-layered, 9” Dunlop set encased in a zippered organic wool & cotton cover. Below are some stores I've looked at along with some issues I have with them.  I think this list will help others who are searching, and I'm also hoping that anyone with latex bed experience will be able to offer their feedback and expertise.  Thank you!

1. Savvyrest: Seems like a great bed, but no return policy. Not with any of their vendors either. I can’t in good conscience drop that much money on a bed without the possibility of returning it. Also, their warranty only covers depressions that are 1 ½” deep or more. That seems like a lot to me, so I don’t have confidence in their beds.

Re: SleepScience mattresses at Costco - Producer08

I've been searching and finally found a new bed. After about a week, I came to the realization that, my current bed before it degraded was perfect, so why the heck am I spending so much time trying to figure out if these new beds and "methodologies" in their construction would work for my body or not? So I researched the best I could on what came closest to my previous bed (a Diamond mattress) and just bought a new Diamond. Been on it for 4 nights now, and NO pain when waking up. All this to say... the reverse is true as well. If memory foam (or in your case NovaForm) isn't working, I'd suggest going with a different bed construction, not memory foam....

I hear you but I think I just was unlucky with NovaForm and got a defective mattress. While waiting for Costco to pick up my NovaForm I slept on the firm side for almost 2 weeks and found it to be rather comfortable, not much sagging under my weight, and no pain in the morning, good sleep too. Also it didn't get any softer after 2 weeks. And the other side is still soft and painful. So I'm contemplating to give Sleep Science a try, it seem to be a better quality mattress than NovaForm, but of course you never know until you get one......

Seems Costco is starting to sell another memory foam brand online - SleepScience. They have a promotion going on and you can get a king mattress for $999 + tax, looks like not a bad deal.

Any thoughts about it?

I had mixed results with Costco's NovaForm. While I really like how the foam mattress feels it had a soft spot right under my butt on one side where I sleep, not sure if it was a manufacturing foam imperfection  or it just became softer "naturally" after one week's of use, anyhow it's giving me pain so I'm in the process of returning it. Wondering if I should bother with another memory foam mattress or it is just going to be the same. I'm 190lbs, 6'4".

I have had that problem with ALL foam in mattresses I've EVER tried, some last weeks, most average 3 1/2 months and then BAM, low back pain.  I'm only 5'6" and 120# so it isn't about height and weight.  Foam is basically a soft plastic/rubber with air bubbles inside of it.  Every time you compress it some of the bubbles pop into other bubbles and the original firmness starts to disappear.  Latex seems to be less like this than other foams;  I had a Latex(Talay)mattress that took a couple of years to break down.
What I don't like about foam is that it simply sinks under weight...it does not push back to support.  Simply gives and sits there.  I think the right spring mattress is the best bet in the long run.
If this new mattress doesn't last either, then you'll know.
First air mattresses were hot, then memory foam mattresses were...
