In general, poly foam will not last but latex foam can and does last longer than innersprings ... especially if you don't go too soft on top. It also has the best combination of qualities that can provide comfort, support, and durability of any foam. Some polyfoams are "close" but you generally won't find them in a mattress without going to a custom manufacturer that uses them (their own brand) or "build your own" and even then it is "unknown" exactly how long they will last as the better ones haven't been on the market long enough to really know. Unless you go in the direction of a "supermattress" that uses natural fibers and different stuffings in their build, you will have some type of foam in your mattress and this will be the "weak link" in how long it lasts and how comfortable and...
Re: Seeking advise - Natural talalay on springs/boxspring - Phoenix

My youngest daughter played university volleyball for 5 years and was on the Canadian championship team for her last 2 so I know a little about volleyball injuries (back, shoulder, ankles, knees at various different times). She had a few times when we thought her whole year may be threatened. I think a lot of people don't realize how "injury prone" high level volleyball can really be.
OK ... enough "bragging" (just couldn't resist :)). Back to mattresses.
I think whether your construction would work for you or not would depend partly on the type of springs you are working on. For a comfort layer this thick I would want them to be very firm. Simmons makes a "luxury firm" version which is softer and an extra firm version which is firmer.
Being a 60% stomach sleeper that is prone to back injuries, I...

It just so happens that I did most of my field testing in Seattle so I do know of a few places :)
These should be helpful ...
http://mattressdepotusa.com/mattresses.htm Retailer. Be careful if you go here as most of their Englander latex has a poly core (not so bad) and 2" poly over the latex (much worse). You would be testing poly thinking it was latex (which they are "trained" to say it is).

How you use the memory foam would be a matter of preference and how it felt. There is no "one size fits all" answer. I personally like the feel of memory foam under a thin layer of latex as in the Simmons NXG 575 I've mentioned before. Others prefer it on top. On top you would sink "faster" and a little deeper and under you would sink "slower" and possibly a little less. Both ways would be different and preference would be your guideline here. You would really be adjusting the feel more than the pressure relief or the alignment and I think that the main thing you may need is just a feeling of plushness on top rather than added pressure relief or support. I would really consider your choices to be between what you have and a lower end "barebones spring" with thicker toppers over it ... assuming...

I personally wouldn't be so sure that the process is only about "guessing". I think that buying a brand new mattress with the intent to do mattress surgery is a little on the "radical" side and probably an expensive way to go. There are enough mattresses with decent springs and little poly that using toppers for the first few years would work just as well (the poly can be useful for a short while). I would also think that there are several options as far as which springs would work the best for these (the lower end Serta's have offset coils and the upper end have continuous like the springwall lower end). Sealy has some good choices as well and local manufacturers have even better ones. Which one to use would depend on personal preferences and on needs. The continuous would be the firmest but the verticoil would need less...
Re: What is the softest mattress (or topper) available? - Phoenix
Dec 15, 2010 2:37 PM
Memory foam is really tricky because their softness is so affected by heat and pressure. They are all "hard" (some more and some less) till you lay on them a bit and they have a chance to "melt". At one time as well Tempur-pedic was the only decent quality memory foam available so they built a "reputation" and priced their product accordingly but this isn't the case any more, there are many others ... mostly considerably less ... but similar in quality. They also have different feels to them (they react differently to heat and pressure).
While I'm not recommending the mattress itself, if you can find a Simmons NXG 575, it may be worth testing out ... just for the sake of seeing how it feels and if it is worth "duplicating". It has latex over NXG (high quality but not Tempur) memory foam over latex and...

Turns out my tender half had decided to wash the covers of the futon (you can unzip them) late last night, so I had to wait for them to dry. Meanwhile, I tried another experiment: remove the cover of the Ikea pillow top to see if using its foam uncovered would feel any different. It’s quite a tough foam, not soft all and very resilient. By itself on top on the mattress, it made the bed feel a little harder than the bare mattress. I then layered the latex, the egg crate, mattress pad and quilt. Right away, I noticed the bed was much flatter so I guess the cover of the pillowtop, which is loose enough to make the bed sag a little in the middle, was the culprit. One minute later, I had bottomed out to the Ikea foam, which as I said, feels harder than the bed itself. I tried to sleep a couple...
Any suggestion for a good mattress retailer near NYC? - Raindrift
Dec 17, 2010 2:27 PM
Hi, I was reading through this site and saw some great suggestions for mattress storesTexas, Phoenix, etc. Don't know if I had missed the post on NY but can anyone suggest any good mattress stores in NYC or have feedback on an online retailer. I just found bedbugs in the mattress in my old apartment prior to moving (already fumigated!) and desperately need a mattress asap. I know this is a great site for me to read through but unfortunately don't have too much time to research now. If I could share what I've done so far, would appreciate any suggestions. I've looked at1800-mattress but understand that sleepy's has bought them out. Wondering what this now means for the pricing there. Also looked us-mattress.com and www.mattressexpert.com but not sure where I'm getting a good deal since all the models are named differently. Am I allowed to bargain with these online...
Sleep EZ - 8500 experience - klas
Dec 24, 2010 8:57 AM
Hello,
I'v been researching latex mattresses wanting to get away for regular coil one. A bit of history, we currently have Queen Simmons Burdock plush mattress, which is a bit on a firm side. There is nothing wrong with it and we've been getting a good sleep on it for years, but latex mattresses advantages have attracted me almost instantly.
I've searched many sites for best deals and stumbled upon Sleep EZ where I ordered initially natural Dunlop 6" special, but quickly changed it Talalay blend Sleep EZ 8500 model. When the sales guy called I asked him what's recommended firmness and he gave me the same suggestion as to everyone else XF, F, S, but I decided to go with Medium for top layer). I am 175 pounds 5'9" and my wife is 125 pound 5'5" (she is also 20 weeks pregnant). We...
Latex Topper On Top of Memory Foam Bed??? - patrick2099
Dec 28, 2010 3:26 AM
I recently purchased a Simmons Comfor-pedic Loft Plush bed. While the bed felt fine in the store, after sleeping on it for about an hour, it feels like I have sunk down to the foundation. I also seem to get much hotter in this bed than I did on my old bed (innerspring with memory foam topper). I do not sleep well on the bed, but I was hoping to not be out the $1,500 I spent on it. I was wondering if anyone had tried putting a latex foam topper on top of a memory foam better, to increase air circulation and prevent sinking? Any opinions would be appreciated....
