Re: Tweaking my toppers again - Catherine

Back again.... reporting on my unfortunate excursion into latex-topper-layering OCD.

(I've been experimenting for a couple of months, so this is gonna get long and might be a little disjointed.)

I have tried every possible permutation of the layering materials I have, and tried some zoning, and have yet to find anything that works as a comfort layer on top of my innerspring mattress.

Here are the latex layers I had (not necessarily all used at the same time) before I tried the zoning:

  • 2" 14-17 ILD natural Talalay latex, bought from a local mattress manufacturer (I'll refer to this piece as 14 ILD; it is ridiculously soft, & quite fragile)
  • 1" 14 ILD, from the same vendor
  • 1" 24 ILD Talatech,...

I'm thinking about trying a 100% conventional foam mattress using materials from FBM.

About me:

 - 6'3"

 - 320lbs

 - very muscular; not much "natural padding"

 - wide shoulders compared to waist

 - tend to be warm all the time

 - mostly back sleeper but like to start off on my side for the first 30 minutes to 1 hour

I've been sleeping happily on a Comfortaire (Sleep Number clone) for the past 12 years.  Sadly, my beloved Comfortaire has sprung a leak.  They want $130 for a new air bladder and it isn't even the right height.  Apparently, they stopped making 9" tall mattresses some time...

Wondering if 2" of natural talalay over springs might give us some of the benefits of latex, but maybe a little more sinking or contour from the pocket springs?

Definitely, try that next.  Might not work for everyone, but I've found there's no substitute for springs under latex.  And I'm not even using high quality/high coil count pocketed springs like you're intending, just recycled innersprings from mid tier posturepedics, but that's exactly what ended all my foam swapping.  Still so nice after a year that I sacrificed another mattress to make a second setup just like it.

But more than anything, since you too prefer to sink in more, I'd recommend keeping as little else as possible between the latex & springs, as well as between yourself & the latex.  I got alot more conforming action once I removed the thick exterior encasement & thin but tight binding around latex itself, both of which restricted its ability to contour around me.  Of course I don't...

Thank you so much for your reply. I have tried those three beds. They are all comfortable that I have felt that the eco-revive is more substantial. So it is interesting to hear the information you gave me. One problem I have is that I need a smooth top because I have a hypersensitivity in my back from a nerve injury. None of them are smooth on top but it's very difficult to find a bed that is. And that could probably  be remedied. The eco-revive is extremely expensive and cannot be returned so I am hesitant about that. Do you have any suggestions? I have been looking for a long long time.

Thank you so much for the help.

I would maybe look at Green Sleep product if...

It takes a long time to sensitize someone to latex, and it usually has to do with other chemicals added into it.  There are a lot of people that cannot wear latex gloves but can touch natural latex foam and not have any of the skin type reactions that they get from the gloves.  The people that actually collect hevea milk for instance almost never get allergic to natural latex even though they touch it in the purest possible form every day.

Organic sheeps wool for example is a very safe choice...people have lived with wool for thousands and thousands of years...wool allergies are a fairly new thing in human history...used to be an extremely rare thing to be legitimately allergic to sheeps wool or lanolin.  Now with all the chemical treatments done to standard mass produced wool we have a lot more people claiming allergies or...

thanks for all the tips and advice guys!

I fully agree on the point about wool, I'm not offended at all.  I honestly think if I presented the "sheep NEED to be shorn of their excess wool" argument to the vegan girlfriend, she could probably produce many articles about cruelty and unethical treatment of sheep.  So that's probably why she has that bias.  She's not extremely against Wool, but she would have to trust that the source sounds ethical (such as Flobeds).

Dave, flobeds sounds amazing, and definitely has the criteria we are interested in.  Unfortunately I am totally reluctant to buy a mattress without lying down on it.  All the youtube videos/testamonials/reviews would not convince me as much as lying down on one.

Right now, I think we've given up on the Sealy line.

I tried out a Keetsa bed a...

I do not have info about the retailer, but the dust mites I can give some info on:

  • Dust mites burrow straight down in their environment
  • Dust mites are everywhere
  • Most people are not allergic to dust mites (but rather to their feces and exoskeletons after they die)
  • When dust mites colonize a bed their entire life-cycle is found in the area so you get it all (some reports have a queen size bed almost doubling in weight over 10 years)
  • Dust mites live off of the bacteria on our skin cells (not on our skin cells, which is a common misconception)...

Mike,

I found another company called Foam Sweet Foam in Lake Forest (Orange Country) (800) 452-6114.  They have all 100% Natural Latex as well and a showroom to lay on them.  Sams has another 100% Latex and it's called American Sleep Organic Item # 190001  for $1,999.  This is the absolute cheapest thing I can find anywhere for 100% Latex and I've put about 4 full days of research into this so far.  If you find anything else, please let me know.  On the Eco-Green one, the memory form part of it is Soy based 70% and then the rest is other.  I talked to the manufacturer direct today.

The "S" brands? - SallySmiles
Jan 13, 2012 7:17 AM
I'm up to my ears in research and found this site.

I keep seeing reference that is almost a warning to the 'S' brands = I know this means the big name brands and I have studied them and all others to a faretheewell.

We had a Simmons BeautyRest for many years, it is on it's second life at our son's house and he still loves it.   From the BeautyRest we went to a memory foam based on medical advice, even though it stunk like mad for a few weeks we slept pain free and it was great for two and half years before something happened and it started being really hot and making me sick. We pulled a Serta from the guest room and are making do,  we had immediate relief from whatever the memory foam was doing to us, it was astounding, but the...
