Yes, but Gardner Mattress is not located in Gardner, MA...haha.   It's named after the original owner I believe.  If you deal with them, go to the main store in Salem, MA!   That's where the owner is and they have better prices there also.  I got my latex mattress there but they also have several other quality innerspring models.  (hint...the owner will negotiate sometimes). Ask for Gardner Sisk.

Yeah, I just noticed that on the website.  A bit dissapointing, but they don't use a whole lot (some S brands use inchs and inches of the stuff).  1" would probably not make much difference  The "Quilted" mattress looks to be the worst offender.  I am not sure why they use it at all other than they are trying to keep the cost down.  Maybe they have a one without or you can request without.  Not sure what the dense polyester is, but I don't think that would lose support like a PU foam.

The pocketed coil does not use PU, just...

Yes, I have heard that they have pretty good quality, and made more of the way they use to make mattresses.  I don't live in that area, so I have never tried.   You probably should check them out.   Just try to avoid anything that has polyuerethene foam in it (at least as little as possible, it doesn't last).

I think you will find that most of the major brands don't hold up over time (like your current experience) because of the cheap PU foam they use on top.  That leaves a few other main options:

Tempurpedic (if you like the memory foam feel - most other memory foam beds are lesser quality so beware),

High end innerspring (like Royal Pedic),

Lesser known local brands (like Gardner or maybe Orginal mattress factory - but make sure they do not use cheap PU foam (ideally none)),

Customized latex (sleepez, flobeds, foamsweetfoam) if you like that feel or one that you piece together yourself (sleeplikeabear, foambymail),

or mattress surgery (cut off the top of your current mattress or another innerspring take out the cheap PU foam and add a few inches off soft to medium latex (15-32 ILD range) and maybe 1-2" of decent memory...

Gardner Mattress will make odd sizes.  Royal Pedic does as well, but more expensive.  Depends on what kind of mattress you want and how much you want to pay.  You may want to find a local mattress maker, so try google search.

Budgy, it seems like there is not a lot of middle ground in the innerspring market.  You have the S brands that all use PU foam, even in their expensive ones (from what I can tell).  Then you have higher quality ones, Royal Pedic for example, but they seem to be out of most people's price range.   Is there nothing in between that uses high quality materials, but costs around $1,500-$2,500 (except maybe local makers) ?   Or is there no way to profitably make a quality name brand mattress at that price?

We are actually having the same basic trouble in our store. Which is that we have this enormous gap to fill between say $1500 in a queen and $2500.  All of the truly really good quality queen sets are starting at atleast $2500 in a queen (this is in Canada of...

I don't think a Gardner is any much more handmade than a normal bed, but I will say it looks like good materials used for the price.  Basically all mattresses in the world have some aspects of their construction that are done by hand.  I would say to call a mattress legitimately hand made then the fillings have to be sorted by hand, the coils have to be stitched together by hand and the upholstery has to be hand tufted.  When its all said and done....none of them will be inexpensive...not to say they wouldn't be reasonable.

Some mattress companies that fit most of those descriptions (other than hand tied coils) - McRoskey, SleepTek (tufted innerspring mattress), Royal-Pedic, Green Sleep (pocket coil ones are stitched together rather than using glue).  I believe the most aggressively priced out of this category is the SleepTek Innerspring mattress although it is...

agree. lots of local mattress makers. just check your yellow pages. gardner would not be my first choice, as their full size mattress only has 250 coils. I would want around 400, and preferably the holland maid brand. ask your local mattress company if they are willing to order that for you. it is like 90 dollars for the coil system if it can be shipped rolled up. the mattress maker can assemble the edge rails as they put it together.
