Re: Tweaking my toppers again - Catherine

Back again.... reporting on my unfortunate excursion into latex-topper-layering OCD.

(I've been experimenting for a couple of months, so this is gonna get long and might be a little disjointed.)

I have tried every possible permutation of the layering materials I have, and tried some zoning, and have yet to find anything that works as a comfort layer on top of my innerspring mattress.

Here are the latex layers I had (not necessarily all used at the same time) before I tried the zoning:

  • 2" 14-17 ILD natural Talalay latex, bought from a local mattress manufacturer (I'll refer to this piece as 14 ILD; it is ridiculously soft, & quite fragile)
  • 1" 14 ILD, from the same vendor
  • 1" 24 ILD Talatech,...

Sandman, thanks.

I watch on YouTube a series of videos on how beds are made today and all the chemicals they put in them and why

they don't last very long and the warranty's company's give is worthless.

It's kinda scary and I am wondering if pure latex is the way to go. Either Dunlop latex or Talalay????

Now, I am talking thousands of dollars.

Thanks

It is hard to say what the actual impact of the chemicals used are.   You are probably already surrounded by stuff in chairs, clothes, food, etc.  I don't worry about it too much (perhaps foolishly), but certainly does not hurt to go more natural.   You might want...

Hi slpngoc,

Can you post links to examples of adjustable beds? do you mean like the kind used in hospitals where you can lift the head up higher? I've been thinking of getting something like that. I had read it can help relieve lower back strain...

I have a SleepEz 8500 and I too am having trouble. I've had lower back pain from day one and now pain in my shoulder and shoulder blades. I have tried SMF, SFM, and MFM as configuraitons - (all 100% natural talalay).  The shoulder pain started with when I made the upper layers more firm which makes sense. but the lower back pain has never improved...

One problem i know is i dont have a foundation yet. the mattress is on the floor. I'm currently researching foundations.

I'm thinking I...

Hello gals and guys,

I'm shopping for a new mattress and even though I think I read a ton, I decided to consult with the community before making final decision. I always trust actual folks lot more than I trust companies pushing their product.

We currently have spring mattress that was pretty expensive at the time we bought it (it was about 12 years ago I believe and we paid around $800 for it). It was good I suppose and it could still go for a while but I think it's time to make a change. It's become very heavy from all the dust accumlated in it (and who knows what else). I also have an upper back problem and I don't feel it's helping. I don't sleep...

wow, the one you bought is beautiful.   I may just go with a eastern king, as sheets will be easier to get, as may be a frame.   (I just thought that the cal king would leave more room for my dogs to sleep on the bed, lol!

I was looking at flobeds.  Their euro slats look nice.  http://www.flobeds.com/foundation/    I was thinking one of those and then maybe a regular metal frame http://www.flobeds.com/product_details.htm?id=8071QU and maybe a headboard?

anyone use the euro slats?

Thanks again, everyone!

Hi Iris,

I was just telling pimy I've got a plan to ease...

Re: Original Mattress Factory? Pillowtops vs Talalay Latex Foam vs Tempurpedic Memory Foam? - slpngoc

You're not alone.  I'm pretty rail thin and have had a hell of a time lately, but I'm learning.  I think Tempurpedic might be some of the most pressure relieving out there.  It is a very popular brand.  I don't think they are a bunch of marketing shysters.  The places they are sold have liberal return policies, so they would be returned if they stunk (pun intended!).  The issue of toxic foam .... I don't have an answer for that.  I would personally sleep on a Temurpedic.  I used a TP symphony pillow for years and never had a problem.

I have a lot of years on innerspring, 4 weeks on an iComfort memory foam bed and 1 1/2 weeks on an all latex bed.

About the all latex.  Well, it is not popular in stores.  Each store has maybe one or two models of latex...

Don't mean to pry or respond to your every post, but was that Shawn's recommendations for layers based on your heights, weights, etc...?

I don't know about bed frames, except I use a $110 Legget and Platt metal bed frame, and I have to shop for another foundation.

well, here's the thing.  I am about 170 lbs and 5'9", and an above knee amputee.   I sleep on my side, but because I don't have two legs, I struggle to turn...

With all respect to Budgy, I don't know if he works hands on with latex., but to the OP, I would think also talking to several mfrs. (SleepEZ, Flobeds, etc...) that have worked hands on with the different latexes over the years would be good.

Here in SF Bay Area, Natural Mattress Stores has 3 stores with organic / latex beds.  Told me they use Dunlop cores / talalay tops in their 'Awareness' line.

that video is interesting.

I would think it is most important to get good quality latex from the best suppliers which apparently are LI, Latexco, Latex Green, etc...

What are the main co's that use the good quality latex?     I originally thinking that total dunlop was the way to...

FWIW, DH and I just bought a split king SleepEZ Select Sleep 10000 in the natural dunlop 2 weeks ago and are very happy. He is 5'8" 180 and I'm 5'5" 145. Although he prefers firm and I like cush, both of our layers are SMF. We used to have a 10-year old queen Serta Perfect Sleeper with pillowtop, but went with a larger mattress because he started twitching a few months ago. It got old really quick taking turns on the sofa. We definitely wanted motion isolation and as natural as possible. TP out of the question because of the chemicals and off-gassing. We are in LA and Foam Sweet Foam was too far to drive. Was slightly apprehensive purchasing a mattress online, but reading the rave reviews between SleepEZ and FloBeds, plus the return policy swayed us.  Went with SleepEZ because they were less expensive and because we...
