Re: Need help finding an equivalent mattress... - jimsocal

You will not find anything exactly like what you had years ago because all the mattress companies change their materials and springs every year or three and they just don't make them the same anymore.

Sealy is now using a titanium spring which is going to feel different than steel. They also are now using pocket coils in their latest midrange and higher end Posturepedics.

As to the Simmons problem I would recommend this:

Call the mattress store you last bought from and ask them for the number of their Simmons representative. If they won't give it to you call around to other stores. Someone will eventually give it to you, I think.

Once you have it be very nice and ask very nicely if he can help you figure it out. Have the info on your tag ready to give him...

  • what do you base that comment on that cheap spring system would probably not provide better support than all latex core?
  • how do you identify a cheap spring system vs. good? I've read on this forum around a 12.5 gauge is good, but thats about all I know about springs.
  • is it possible to buy just a set of springs somewhere, then put latex toppers on top of it and wrap it all up in a mattress cover? would that work? would it be too squeaky or unstable?anyone try it?"

Thanks for the replies! I haven't much time lately for checking forums, thus the slow response.

I'll check out the foundations links.

Yes, at first the Dunlop was too hard for me but somehow I got used to it - maybe it softened up some? - or maybe the bowed wood softens it up enough for me.

2" of Talalay on top of the Dunlop seems to soften it up enough. The reason I went to a firmer mattress was that I kept having lower back pain and I remembered the lesson learned here in my own and others' threads: "If you are getting lower back pain your mattress is probably too soft." So I forced myself to try the more firm mattress and it seems to work.

Is this configuration perfect? Unfortunately no. I still wake up sometimes with back pain...

Hey Jim,

I think that it would be better from a looks standpoint to have the top cover sewn on a little more tightly...this will firm up the mattress though..so I suppose it is a matter of preference.

I did sell Simmons for about 8 years...we never really carried the coil-on-coil mattresses, as even though the springs sounded interesting, the upholstery was essentially the same as the lower priced Beautyrest models.  Seemed very expensive to me for what it was.

I definitely agree with you that  the dual coil Simmons are overpriced. However, it seems I am not as concerned about the upholstery and materials as you are. Would I rather have things like wool, cotton, silk, cashmere, etc in my mattress as opposed...

Re: European mattresses are not discussed here...why? Any users...feedback? - jimsocal

I think no one talks about them because no one knows about them or owns one.

I live in a big city and have never run across any European mattresses here. They probably exist here but I'm just saying, they're not very common. I don't doubt that there are better mattresses made in Europe than in the USA. Here, only a few very expensive high end make "advanced" and quality mattresses. The rest are just mass-produced. We do have a lot in the way of latex mattresses though. Stearns and Foster makes a synthetic latex which is zoned and is included in some of their upper echelon mattresses. Or is it Simmons? One or the other does this. Simmons also has some mattresses with an extra layer of visco foam across the lumbar region and now even Sealy is doing somethng similar with a reinforced lumbar region.

They don't mention the coil count.I have a 15-18 year old Sealy Esteemed Pageant and don't really want anything that I sink into. I like something firm with no frills but also nothing too cheap.

Also I have heard some people had problems buying from Sleepys with bed bugs. Should I go to one place over another?

If you click on the links on the page above for your model it will show you the specs. I believe this is the one you are talking about:

  • Mattress height: 12"
  • Comfort level: cushion firm
  • Quilting...

as for discussion about DIY in the past I honestly do not remember...but thinking about it at the moment I cannot think of any reason why a pocket coil would be tougher to use for the build than any other spring system...preferably one without a foam encasement would be stronger though...the interactive coil unit that you have DIY'ed in the past..was it foam encased?

I have used two  -one I think is a Bonnell coil - 12.5 gauge; I haven't looked at it lately - my wife is sleeping on it and I forgot what type of spring system it was; cheap though; and the other is a Sealy helicoil system from their CostCo line. The Sealy is slightly foam encased. It has about an inch of that very hard type of foam along the edge and reinforced with...

Budgy, thanks.  I am always skeptical too about S companies though I have to admit that I have looked at the Simmons and S&F demos in stores and it does look like it might serve me better than most of the other helicoil type springs out there. As to how long it would serve me, that's a big question. I have not looked super carefully at the S&F Intellicoil but I did see the model in the store where you can press down on it to see how it performs, and my impression was that the inner coil would stay in place. I may go back and take a closer look now that you mention it.

I am impressed by the Simmons double coil system where they have one lighter gauge shorter coil on top of a heavier gauge short coil. This does seem like a good spring...
