Hi Everyone, I have wrestled with wanting a latex mattress for such a long time ... last week bought a Stearns and Foster latex mattress and then when the sales associate at Sears said I had to have a waterproof cover over it to protect the warrantee on it ... I started to shudder and cancelled the order pronto. I thought why the heck would I pay almost $3,000 on a great mattress ... and by DIYers it isn't great ... only to wrap it with a "plastic" cover ... thought it would resemble a hospital bed. Anyways, I just heard of Sleep like a Bear and thought I would look at their site. I like the look of this Zippered Quilted Mattress Cover ... http://www.sleeplikeabear.com/product/COV-WOL-018 Does anyone have one? Are there other sites that offer similar products at better price?...

You will not find very many people on this website that are fans of, what is euphemistically called in the industry, the big S. brands.

People here normally like latex mattresses that they can adjust themselves purchased from online retailers, in the main, or some local store. But before I decided that I wanted to build my own mattress with one of the online retailers, I was seriously considering a Stearns and Foster latex mattress.

Do not consider their plush pillow top mattresses as the synthetic cheap foam will break down in a matter of months or even weeks sometimes. I believe the mattress that I was looking at is referred to as a, "smooth top". I was looking at a California King that included their box springs and I had got the price down to around $2400 delivered.

If there is some way that you can get a credit for the...

If you have done your homework then you know from reading this form that many people have gone through the same process that you're going through.

I almost purchased a Stearns and Foster all latex mattress. But after doing my research I came to the conclusion that one of the online stores that offered exchanges and a full return of money if I didn't like the mattress, would be a far superior experience.

This of course necessitated that I made arrangements to be home to receive the mattress and go through the process of putting it together and sleep testing it. But when you're talking about $2500-$3000 for a mattress ( California King) then having to put myself out was worth it to me. The biggest single thing is what kind of firmness level is going to work best for you. Again, if you have done your research on this forum, you...

What is your budget and what size mattress?  The problem you will find is that any of the less expensive (and even the more expensive) innersprings is that they use junky foam.   So, it may not be the most comfortable and it will lose support over time (sometimes fairly quickly).   Of ones I have tried (but not owned), I liked the Stearns & Foster Estate luxury firm.  They are a bit expensive though, especially if you don't get a good sale.  The older models got bad reviews because they started to sag over time.  I am not sure if they have fixed that problem.

Sealy has interlinked coils which should provide a firmer surface, but may not be as comfortable for a side sleeper.   In my experience, the most support will be on the ones with the most coils.  They will cost more, and even the most expensive ones will have some junky...

So, any recommendations on an s-brand firm (but not ultra firm, I don't think I could handle that, even with a topper)

I have the stearns and Foster Ultra firm estate series (the new and improved S&F). It's really firm. My wife (about your size, and prefers soft )could not take the firmness of it. However, she loved it with the 3" soft memory foam I was referring to earlier. But of course I didn't like the memory foam, so like I said, we're switching to latex.

In other words, I think with the right softness of latex/foam you could probably handle an ultra firm mattress....

My wife and I bought the Ultra firm  S& F (estate), and let me tell you this thing is REALLY firm. We decided to go with the topper/spring combo. The only problem is that we've had a hard time finding the right topper to soften it up a little. Right now we have a 4.1 density (I think) Isotonic Isocool 3 " memory foam. I tend to sleep very hot, but this one seems to do the trick in staying cool. My only issue is that since the winter started and our room has been cold the memory foam doesn't return to form very fast. Is this a typical problem? I have until February to return it so please let me know if anyone has suggestions.

Anyway, the S&F is close to sleeping on the floor as you can get. For those doubters of S&F, the estate series is apparently a...

all forms of memory foam are heat sensitive and when they are cool they will not respond as quickly or return to their original shape as quickly.  I wouldn't call it a 'problem' more like an unavoidable consequence of design.  You may want to consider trying a different topper if this is a really big annoyance to you....or possibly learn to deal with the one shortcoming because it sounds like other than the slower recovery that you are comfortable with it....
