Thanks, Jim and Budgy! I appreciate your insights! I don't see what the advantage is supposed to be over just stacking two layers of different density together. It probably is just an advertising gimmick. Just calling it "smartlatex" I guess is supposed to make us assume it's a great new innovation or it would be called "smart," would it?  Doh!

I agree that whatever it is, it's mostly just marketing. The mattress industry is full of it (pun intended).
Putting 2 layers on top of each other without gluing them would achieve the same thing in my opinion.

I saw a page describing Simmons foams. It has about 30 different types of foams with different names. Or was it Sealy/S&F? Whatever, they're all pretty much the same when it comes to marketing. Anyway, what it boils down to...

if the coils are going to migrate at all its going to be where the mattress is used the most, where you are sleeping rather than on the edge.  poly foam edges are weaker than steel from edge to edge.  the other concerns with the polyester pocket coils is that the fabric usually seems to be just big enough to fit the coils inside and tends to restrict individual movement on the coils as the fabric will tug on the adjacent coils pulling them down towards the heavier points of your body where the springs compress more.  this can also cause noise, where as cotton seems to dampen the noise somewhat.  I am really not sure of any particular place in CA that can get you springs by themselves...but I believe Vivetique imports a highquality hand nested pocket coil and they I believe are...

I think out of all the brands I listed Marshall Mattress is probably the most reasonably priced.  And their coils are among the best.

Hi Budgy, thanks for the reply. I checked the net for Marshall Mattress and found their web site but could not find anything on their web site that says where they are available except for a store in Ontario. I wrote them to ask if they are available online or in CA but I am doubtful that they are, based on my not finding any info at google that says so.

Any other ideas for a good pocket coil that might be available in CA or online?

Why is cotton better than synthetic pockets for the coils? Because it is less likely to tear? Even if it tears, I am not...

Danielle,

Hi!  I bought a bed from SleepEZ because of all the great reviews here but was also disappointed with my purchase once it arrived and ended up sending it back after only two days.  I know some say you should give it time but it was such a bad experience right from the git go for us (my dh and me).  The day it came we noticed the mattress had some dark moldy looking stuff on it and my dh called to ask about it.  We were told it was common to get that when they are pressing the latex down or something to that nature.  Then while we were laying the pieces out, the dust was so bad that it kicked me and my sons asthma in...

Budgy, if I am not mistaken, you posted some time ago about various mattress manufacturers who make the kind of pocket coils that are better quality than Simmons. I am "sold" on the idea of pocket coils but am wary of buying a Simmons even though I may do so if I can't find a quality pocket coil mattress within my budget.

Anyway, I did a search for pocket coils and could not find your thread, if it exists. I know you commented within my "Are S Companies Switchiing to Pocket Coils" thread but that isn't the one I am looking for. I am looking for names of manufacturers of mattresses who use quality pocket coils, and if you have price ranges on a Twin or Full that's all the better.

Obviously, ANYONE who has prices for pocket coils made with Quality in mind - please...

I am not really looking for just coils, I am looking for an entire mattress. Of course I figure there is a chance I will have to perform surgery on anything I buy but for now I am open to buying a complete pocket coil mattress. IF I knew of a place that would sell me just the springs nestled in the mattress for me to add my own foam I might do that - if it were substantially cheaper than buying the whole mattress; but frankly I doubt any company would sell me just the springs minus the foam on top, and sewn top.

Their web site does not say where their dealers are located - very odd; you have to write them an email or call...

http://www1.macys.com/campaign/social?campaign_id=61&channel_id=1&cm_sp=dealsandpromos-_-n-_-n says the shipping deal ends on 12/31/2011.  I agree with jimsocal: buy the best mattress you can afford.  Make sure to read the return policy if you are having a mattresses shipped.  Just because they can ship you a mattress of $70 doesn't mean you can ship it back for that same price.  Unless you can find a freight company, etc....
topper - ky88

I have a simmons black pocket coil that I have had for about a year.  We decided to go with the plush top instead of a pillow because we figured the pillow top would degrade fast.  I have found though that I need more softness as my shoulder hurts in the morning due to being a side sleeper.  Other then that I love the bed.  My question is what kind of topper would anyone reccomend and what thickness is reasonable to make a difference.

I have some news for the most recent post that iComfort is made by Serta and nobody else.  I work in the foam industry.  Obviously that previous post does not understand the mattress industry.  Serta makes nothing.  They purchase materials: innersprings, adjustable bases, foams, fabrics from other companies.  They then assemble those pieces together to make the product.  The point being that iComfort is not a unique or new technology, story or otherwise.  Been around a while.

In fact some ComforPedic (Simmons) already has this and has for years.  Nothing new.  I give Serta credit for the creative spin, but it is WAY overpriced for what it is.  As others have mentioned, Sleep Innovations makes this product for Serta and is BRANDED Serta at Sam's Club.  Same product is branded "NovaForm" at Costco.

iComfort looks pretty, great story...but the data simply isn't there from what I...
