Re: Desperately Need Mattress Purchase Help! - Lynn2006

Zortania, I know how you feel since when Rockaway Bedding Delivered the Simmons Roosevelt Mattress, I was amazed at how I could not breath when I was in the same room as the mattress. I tried airing it out and covering it but sleeping on it made me cough and get so hot and nauseous.  I had to sleep on the floor in my storage room and was better there despite my allergies to dust and dustmites than in my own bedroom that had that mattress. I guess they use a lot of fire retardent chemicals and the polyurthane outgassing in a smaller space than in a store must just bother people like you and me that must be chemically sensitive.  I used to always have a stuffy nose on my very old spring mattress but nothing like I experienced with the new bed that I had to send back...

Nick, both Flobeds and SleepEZ have the choice of natural Tatalay Latex or blended Talalay Latex.  The processing is the same and the cleaning they do of the latex is amazing since the blended latex does not bother my allergies.  The blended is a combination of synthetic and natural latex from a rubber tree that they blend in a mixture with air and go through the same processing as the natural Talalay Latex.  The Natural Talalay Latex cores are 3" thick while the blended Talalay Latex Cores are 2.8" thick.   My Flobed latex kit mattress is a combination of both natural latex cores and blended latex cores. I tried to stay with all natural but I needed firmer than a 36 ILD and needed some 44 ILD latex cores to make my bed as firm as I like it so I had to get some blended latex cores that surprisingly...

I did not realize FloBeds was having a sale on Go Green and their adjustable foundation was the same price as their fir foundation.  I always prefer as much natural materials as I can in my sleeping environment so that is why I went green and then I had to make a decision to take two of my latex cores away (the 4 layer version I have since the 4th layer is a topper: one natural latex core on each side of my bed was exchanged ) and to add the 44 ILD blended latex core on each side to give me the firmness that my back requires.  I have a slight scoliosis that I had all of my life and now with the car accident in August, I have 5 herniated disks and I think I finally readjusted my bed to work with my new back problems. I was so...

I do not feel well but it looks like I will not get much work done anyway so I will try to respond to this question and then make sure I am in bed early tonight.

I would not go with the adjustable foundation. I went with the split pine slat foundation with 10" legs and this is just fine.  But at first the pine smell bothered me (did not bother my allergies but I just do not like any smell when I am sleeping but most new stuff has a smell at first ... even the natural latex cores I had to air out for a few days but then they never bothered me and never bothered my allergies)  but after several days it went away and now I no longer smelled the pine smell.

The less latex core layers the firmer your surface will be since you will be closer to the slat foundation. ...

If you can find the new Serta Pure Response line of 100% latex, I think you'll really like the way they feel. I just discovered them yesterday and if I wasn't already happy with my zippered mattress, I might give this serious consideration. I loved the way they felt! Especially the plush model. Comes with a 30 year warranty. Pro-rated, of course. But, since latex doesn't show body impressions, I imagine this mattress will last a long time. I liked it better than the Sealy Spring Free line.

Wow! Thanks to everyone who responded. We appreciate your advice! I know that we are toally strange, but *MOST* of the time we enjoy snuggling in our full sized bed. Since your husband and you prefer different comfort levels on your mattress, I suggest (when you find the space), you invest in an Eastern King size, only in the form of two Extra Long Twin mattresses and foundations. Put them in the same king frame. That way you can have your side as firm as you want and he can have his as plush and cushy as HE likes. This is how my husband and I have slept for the past 15+ years or so. And, yet to look at our bed you would think it was all one King mattress. We use King bedding which ties the bed together, but at the same time two XL Twins allow us to move independently, as well as choose our own comfort levels.

Best wishes to you!

There are nights, of course, where one of us is sick or restless, and then it can be exasperating, but that's what the guest bedroom is for. Usually once he gets settled, we're fine. It's the cats that really wish the bed were bigger. If you can imagine the two of us and three huge Maine Coon cats sharing a standard full...

My husband and I finally found some latex beds to "lay/lie" on today. We went to every single mattress place near our town. The sales people pulled out all the stops trying to convince us what we should look for in a mattress ("You'll want the latest innovation: a no flip mattress!"). We let them show us everything, and were quite entertained with...

I have been web researching for weeks and I am trying to make the final decision on a latex mattress. This is a cold purchase for me and my husband, as we have been unsuccessful in finding a single latex mattress to try out in our town, even for a few minutes. I have spent countless hours researching online, reading reviews, scanning buyers guides, comparison shopping, nit-picking, etc. I even ordered a latex and wool sample from one of the websites that offers them for free. Yet every morning I wake up groaning in my awful, 17-year-old sagging bed and swear that today I am going to bite the bullet and choose a mattress. And then I end up here at 11 pm, not wanting to crawl into bed, but fearful of hitting the "confirm order" button on the checkout page.

My husband and I have decided to buy a latex mattress for support, durability, and allergies....

I’ve decided on the Select Sleep 8500 from SleepEZ but need to make a final decision on layers.  First, I’ll lay out (no pun intended) my stats and requirements:  I am a 51 yr. old female, 5’2” tall, 155 lbs.  I have lower back issues (degenerated disc at L5/S1), osteoporosis of the spine, osteopenia of the hips and a joint disease similar to Rheumatoid Arthritis.  To top it all off, I’m an insomniac and a stomach sleeper (at least to fall asleep – when I sleep at all).  This means that I need firm support but enough “cush” to avoid waking up with a frozen shoulder or an arm that’s asleep as I do now (currently extra firm innerspring with convoluted memory foam topper). Sean recommended firm/med/soft...

Steve, I do not know why Dunlap Latex would last longer than very firm Talalay Latex. I can see it laster longer than soft latex but this is just my opinion.

What was the ILD Density on the Englander you tested since each companies Firm differs in the firmness?  What was the ILD Density of the soft cushion? Also only have 6" of latex over a very firm base, will be much firmer than three latex cores on top of one another.  I would call around to find out if anyone has a mattress made of Dunlap Latex to try out even if it is a far drive since you will be allowed one exchange with SleepEz.  If you really want to try the Dunlap (there are people on this site that like it a lot), maybe Shawn will work with you in writing to give...
