Get the base first. You will know then, if you want a medium or a soft top layer. You might even like sleeping directly on the 36 ILD with no topper.
Memoryfoam.com still sells 28 ILD talatech, but only in 3" thick. That might work if you are a side sleeper, but it would probably be too thick for stomach or back sleeping.
foambymail.com sells 1", but the manufacturer is unknown.
Good luck in your quest....

I'm interested to hear how you will sleep on 8.4" of 44 ILD talatech. Are you planning to use the convulated topper over it? Otherwise I think it will be way too firm....

I received samples of three different ILDs of 3.0 lb HR foam today from FoamOnline.
- The #1 thing I find interesting is that a 3.0 lb foam has a minimum density of 2.5 lbs. The three samples of 3.0 lb foam I have are from 2.5 to 2.7 lb density.
- The IFD of an IFD 44 foam can range from 41 to 47. This is a pretty wide range.
- The latex sample they sent has ILD 44 written on the side, but there's no way. it feels less firm than my Talatech 38 and about the same as the HR 26 and Energia 27.
- The ILD 45 HR foam is FIRM. I think if you laid on a slab of that stuff you would say it was downright hard.
- The sample marked ILD 34 feels much more firm than my ILD 38 latex.
- The texture is very coarse, especially the ILD 44.
- Foamex...

You aren't going to want to hear this schippec, but a flexible slat foundation will address both the sinking hips and bottoming out issues, or rather let me say it did for me. Unfortunately, they cost an arm and a leg.
Foam By Mail. Evade, inveigle, and obfuscate.
What does "Made in USA" mean? What does "international" mean? I think they know darn well that these terms are misleading, but there is just enough gray that they can't be accused of outright lying. In the lexicon of Foam By Mail, if the latex is shipped here from another country but sliced into layers and cut to size here, they feel entitled to claim that the topper is "made" in the USA. International could mean Latex International, but it could also mean "another country." What a great example of how some words and phrases can mean nothing.
What I am curious to see is...

I had an interesting conversation with Shawn at SleepEZ today that ties into this. They carry latex from I think three different, and maybe even four, manufacturers. They carry Vita because that's what their customers from Europe are familiar with. They carry a dunlop process latex. In his words "they are all good." He suggested that just as with innersprings and memory foam, at some point we can probably expect to start getting latex from China, and the quality, as with springs and memory foam, is not going to be top-of-the-line. But as far as he knew, that day was not here yet and all latex was still coming from the U.S., Europe (UK, Netherlands, Belgium), and Sri Lanka, and all was of good quality.

FYI, FoamByMail is the same company as TheFoamFactory. Same address and phone number.
They offer ILD 20 and ILD 32 in 1", 2", and 3"
They say their toppers are talalay and "Made in USA" which should imply Latex International, but in fact does not. I called them a few weeks ago and at first they said their latex was from Latex International, but in a subsequent call was told only that they got their latex from a company in the Southern U.S. I asked if it was a latex manufacturer or a latex distributor. I was told it was a distributer. When asked who manufactured the latex, the lady said "I don't know who manufactures the latex." It has to be either Dunlopillo (U.K.) or Radium (Netherlands.) What's odd about this is "what's the big...

[This was written last night but I fell asleep on the new mattress before I posted...]
I will sleep on the "bed" as it now stands tonight, which is the flexible slat foundation, 5.6" of Talatech ILD 38 latex, and an Intelli-Gel topper from MyComfort..
One immediate thing I notice is I no longer "bottom out" the 5.6" latex core. If I plop down on the center of the mattress I can feel the "strong back" where the two units meet, but thanks to the flexible slats, there is no bottoming out feeling except in the middle or right on an edge. The flexible slat foundation makes a thinner mattress a viable option where it would not be on a rigid platform.
The sinking hips sensation seems to be lessened a bit, due to being able to firm up this section relative to the upper body. It's zoning at the foundation level. Note:...

I picked up the MyComfort Intelli-Gel topper at lunch. It's in the back of my truck so I can't give any impressions yet.
It was shipped flat in a cardboard box on a pallet. A guy at the freight company helped me pull the bands off and take it out of the box so I could get it in my truck. It will definitely be an unwieldy thing to move - 150 lbs of wet noodle. The bottom side is a fairly aggressive anti-skid material, the sides and top are a stretch-knit fabric. It's still in the plastic so that's all I can say about the cover at this point.
I'm excited to finally have it. It has been a long wait. Tonight I will put it on top my IFD 38 LI Talatech core and sleep on it. I will add another layer of something to the support mattress, but what that something is...

I took delivery of the MyComfort Intelli-Gel 'Single' topper last Monday. Unfortunately they shipped me a regular "Eastern King" rather than the California King I ordered, so a second topper is being shipped.
I have been sleeping on it. The current arrangement is:
