Ortho stores sell a Stearns and Foster that is 98% latex. Look at the LABEL on the head end of the mattress though; some of the sales people will tell you it's "all latex" but they're not. They have 3 different models and one of them is about 97% latex and the other 2 are between 80-90% if I recall correctly. Anyway it's one of the few chain stores where you can actually check out the feel of latex.

I think someone said there's a store called "PJ's" (I think) that sells latex. I think they used to sell Englander latex and I think they're somewhere around the Beverly Center but don't quote me. Someone in another recent thread about Los Angeles said there was a  place in Santa Monica that sold latex mattresses; then there is Foam Sweet Foam in O.C..

Latex may be what...

Jaxon Home in Culver City carries Savvy Rest mattresses.  Never been since they close usually around 6 and it is hard for me to make it before then, but I plan on checking it out.

Thanks for this info. I live near Culver City and never heard of this place but will check it out now.

Ortho Mattresses carries some 80-99% synthetic latex mattresses by Stearns And Foster. S&F makes different mattresses for different companies and these are only sold at Ortho. I think they're overpriced for synthetic latex but sometimes they are on sale. Also know that whatever the price posted on the mattress you can usually get it at about 40% off that. They work off commissions so walk out and try another salesman on another day. Sometimes a salesman is willing...

Yesterday I finally got to visit my friends who had said they wanted to sell an old but barely used innerspring mattress. We had a lovely visit, but I didn't get a good look at the mattress; and for various reasons, they seem not to be ready to part with it after all. So that's out, and I'm back to square one.

Did some mattress shopping on Saturday, but nothing knocked my socks off.   Tried various memory-foam mattresses; hated them.   Found the continuous-coil Sertas to be quite uncomfortable (hard on the shoulders).   Didn't find anything really comfortable at Jamestown Mattress.   Nor at City Mattress -- although I didn't spend much time on any given mattress there, and had a salesman talking at me the whole time I was there.  He seemed a bit sad about the decline of Stearns & Foster (after it got bought...

I'm also looking into a bed from http://originalmattressfactory.com.  User TC2334 posted a recommendation for their Orthopedic Extra Firm. TC2334 has a 400lb friend who is happy with the bed.  There are a number of posts here stating that Original Mattress Factory builds quality beds the old fashioned way.  I might end up visiting the showroom to try this mattress.  I could by a lot of foam and topper for same price though...

If there's an OMF showroom near you, then you might as well go try out their mattresses. You might find one you like, or your visit might confirm your initial decision to go with a 50-ILD foam base. Either way, it's good.

I have a friend, male, who is 6'2" or 6'3" and weighs over 400 lbs but not many scales can weigh him, exactly.  He has an Original Mattress Factory, Orthopedic Extra Firm, with the double row of foam cylinders for edge support.  He says it's the only thing that suooprts his weight ans holds up well.  He bought it as mattress + box spring set in 2007.     When I checked with OMF last Fall and again in March 2011, they told me that they don't offer the double row of foal edge supports, it's just a single row now, due to not wanting to flammability-test it.   I take that to mean that the double row probably didn't pass or won't pass, so now thwy sell only a single row or no additional edge support.  That set runs around $900 or something.  The prices are posted on their web site.   The...
I need mattresses for the kids -- help! - stacytr

I haven't been on here for a while since my mattress surgery last year. We are still tweaking, but our sleep is SO much better than it was. Thank you for all the great advice everyone has given me. :)

Now I have a new problem. I've been searching through here for days, but have found very little information regarding mattresses for kids. My 9 yr old son is less than 60 pounds (long and lean) and is on an Ikea foam mattress that looks similar to this one. We've had it for 3-4 years and just put a 2" pink overstock memory foam over it with a Costco cuddlebed on top. We've had the memory foam for a year (just on a different bed), so I'm not too worried about offgasing -- but I don't know if it's a good choice for support and...

Latex is nice, & will likely sleep cooler, but the performance of quality polyurethane is underrated around here.

I just have to agree with Sara that once you find a setup that actually works for you, I'd stick with it.  Going max inflation, then fine tuning until it just starts to contour sounds great.  Unless the other problems, the split bladder & noise etc. you really just can't live with (maybe the brand name version is better in those regards?), then of course it's time to experiment.  The second setup you listed sounds better.  That 1" 12ild layer might as well not even be there under you, & especially if it's free shipping start with as few layers as possible- if it's all the same price getting them one layer at a time., &...

Okay.... anyone have ANY sort of gel topper experience they can share ... orthogel, anything?

What Im wanting to get at is  1) how sleeping on a gel topper compares to an actual, complete gel bed.   And, does it do anything for you that a soft latex couldn't do?

And, 2) what sort of base (1or 2 layers) would work the best in combination with the gel?  I'm thinking firm, but exactly how firm?

Its sort of a DIY approach, only using the gel topper instead of a soft foam.

Wish I could test all these options out locally - but alas, it's not possible.

How bout an Intelli-gel topper over a firm latex on a platform? - Kashkakat

Like many of you Ive been on an epic search for a bed that doesnt kill my aging body.  I injured my back (herniated disk) last year, partly because I had a huge sinkhole in my bed.  I threw it out and slept on the floor for many months.  It worked well, until it didn't.  Now I have excruciating joint pain in shoulders/hips - Im sleeping on a foam pad over an airmattress while I try to figure this out and its torture.

I alternate between back and side sleeping. What I found after testing beds is what felt the best for the back (a medium- firm latex) crunched my shoulders/ hips when I turned to my side.   And what best cushioned shoulders/hips (an Orthogel bed) had a bit of a dip or hammock effect when i turned to my back.  It didnt seem to maintain the...

I recently tried a Nexgel bed by Natura. It was the basic model with one layer of Nexgel over 8 inches of foam. They didn't say what the foam is and no other specifications are given for the product. I did find it quite comfortable but wondered what the more advanced models would feel like. Unfortunately, the store only had the basic in stock.

I then started web searches for Nexgel and found more disappointing information than I could stand.

I am now thinking of just getting and Inteligel topper for my current bed. Is there a NexGel topper, I can't find one. It might cost less. Don't know how it would stand up compared to Inteli-Gel. I believe these products are over priced, missing a much larger market.

I like the idea of adding...
