Re: Tweaking my toppers again / mattress surgery - Catherine

So, this is sorta interesting (to me): I just spoke with Sean at SleepEZ, because I was thinking of trying a couple inches of the 22-24 natural Talalay latex (to use instead of this too-soft 14 ILD stuff; that was an expensive mistake).

We talked for a bit; I told him about the mattress surgery, about the stack of various toppers I'm sleeping on now, and about the difficulties of balancing support with pressure relief (i.e., if hips are OK, my shoulders get crunched); and he said he wouldn't recommend a latex mattress for me. He thinks I'll do better using latex over springs; and he advised finding a continuous-coil innerspring (with at least 660 coils for a full-size mattress) and *avoiding* pocket coils because they might let the hips sink too far.

Huh. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on the topper (it...

Interesting information, thank you all.  Success or successful advertising - whatever,  they are still around for a reason.  I understand profit is the nature of business and I don't even blame them for inventing the no-turn mattresses. I haven't the energy or strength to turn a mattress regularly so I bougt into that.

My personal take is that in order to get a mattress without all the chemicals and cheap filler I have to go to the top tier of Stearns and Foster.  The chemicals have darn near killed me as it is.  Why would I do that? Well I for one would really like to try the bed before purchasing, although in all honesty the odds are 50/50 even then.  I'd prefer to not have to drive around for days on end to find a mattress, but I live...

I'm up to my ears in research and found this site.

I keep seeing reference that is almost a warning to the 'S' brands = I know this means the big name brands and I have studied them and all others to a faretheewell.

We had a Simmons BeautyRest for many years, it is on it's second life at our son's house and he still loves it.   From the BeautyRest we went to a memory foam based on medical advice, even though it stunk like mad for a few weeks we slept pain free and it was great for two and half years before something happened and it started being really hot and making me sick. We pulled a Serta from the guest room and are making do,  we had immediate relief from whatever the memory...

I too have done a ton of research here too, and also do not like a bed that sleeps warm. I'm passing this advice to you strictly from the plethora of information I've been reading here, not by personal experience. So here goes:

What's causing the bed to retain heat is the petroleum based sythetic foams used in the top layers of the bed. Recommendations given to others in the past are to add natural materials between you and the synthetic stuff. Natural materials unfortunately are not inexpensive. Most recommend a thick wool topper, a latex topper, or both.

Lower threadcount sheets are also a great idea. Get percales if you can afford them. Because every thread is woven over every other thread, these breath much better than sateens. I'd also recommend 100% cotton. I just picked up a king sized set of Percales which were...

Thanks tjstogner!  Interesting you should mention the allersoft, I ran across it as well after I posted my questions.  Seems a lot of online retailers are selling it as it popped up several times.  It's marketed as a dust mite / allergen barrier.  My biggest question about it is its softness and pliability, it looks a bit stiff from the photos.  Can you describe yours to me?  Would it be ideal to act as the only cover over latex layers?

I also ran across this one from thecleanbedroom (albeit more expensive):  http://www.thecleanbedroom.com/Organic_Mattresses/Mattress_Encasings/Organic_Dust_Mite_Mattress_Encasings.htm  But again the tight weave fabric appears stiff in the photo.

I'm also considering a more traditional cotton / bamboo...

Hi.. just thought I would put my two cents in here.. I did so much research about 3 years ago for the latex mattresses.. ended up with the Sealy Springfree.. loved it for the 1st year..then it seemed like the latex was getting strange.. the upper part of the mattress was so beautiful to lay on and conformed to every part of your body but I was un aware of what it was doing to me when I slept on it..  In the second year it began to bow across the middle and cause so much body pain it wasn't even funny..plus after much reading on latex I have learned that the latex is a powerful material.. as you lay on it the latex it continues to press on your body because it naturally wants to stay up, thus as your body sinks in it is pushing back.. the hip pain...
DIY latex mattress results - way2sleepy

Thanks to everyone who's posted about their latex topper and mattress experiences, as well as opinions on different vendors.  I have now completed my own DIY latex mattress setup and thought I'd post my experiences.  About 6 years ago, I bought a twin extra-long 3" 100% natural Talalay topper from Foamsweetfoam.com.  (At the time, they were selling toppers--now, they don't.)  I bought mine for about $150, because it had some damage to it.  The damage wasn't anything I couldn't live with--a few tears, some dirt, etc.  I brushed it off, put it under a fitted sheet, and placed it on top of a way-too-hard (but very good) new Simmons Beautyrest mattress.  When I bought the topper, I was told it was "medium" in firmness and what most people bought.  I've used this setup for the past 6 years or so but found myself growing increasingly uncomfortable (probably age--late 50s, normal...
Re: GOOD OR BAD? : Nature's Rest Plush Firm Latex Foam - Jordan's (Boston) - kk011

I have to whole heartedly agree with jwelch on Nature's Rest.  I have a Queen Nature's Rest "Vista" model, which incidently carries the Latex International Seal of Design and Manufacturing Excellence -- something I really never noticed until reading this thread.  The original price on that mattress was approx $3,300 at Filenes in 2002.  I was an employee and it had been marked down, so after multiple discounts I paid $750; had I known then what I know now, I would have happily paid $3,300!  That mattress is fabulous!  Unfortunately for my partner and I, we wanted to move up to a King size mattress in 2010 and I just could not find a Nature's Rest.  I tried Jordan's and they'd stopped partnering with Naure's Rest -- I was told by Jordan's that NR has started to use an inferior latex product.  I shopped and researched quite a bit trying to find something that would be as...
Latex bed help - orgomom

Hi all,

This forum is super valuable! But I am now overwhelmed with choices and need some help. I am in search of a queen mattress (top only, since I have a platform bed) for myself and a twin for my son (top bunk). I am searching for a natural latex (I hope I am using the right term) mattress (no innerspring), but wish to seek your wisdom before I plunk down lots of money as an investment.

My stats are: 5'7" and 130-135lbs (back to side sleeper with a bad lower back). My son is 47" and around 46-48lbs (and is an all around the bed sleeper).

I currently have two S-brand freebies that are uncomfortable.

I have tried the following mattresses for queens:

Savvy Rest (2 layer - both Dunlop - 1 soft top and...
