RichardP,  I bought my base mattress and foundation from Gardner Mattress, of Salem, MA.   Its a small, locally owned company that builds their own mattresses.   They are very reputable and easy to deal with but don't really customize the latex much.   My 6 Inch base and 2 inch middle layer are enclosed in Gardner's nice cotton and wool cover (sealed).  I found this mattress way TOO firm after already doing my 1 comfort exchange. (Originally had Gardner's "medium latex mattress" which was too soft and bottomed out on me).  Cost was $1999. with a nice sturdy wood and metal foundation.   Then, I added 3 inches of "medium" Talalay latex from FoamSweetFoam for $400.(I don't think they sell toppers any longer)  and 1 inch of Sensus memory foam from Overstock for $65.    So, that's where my total cost of  $2464. comes from.

I would price a good foundation (NOT boxspring) from a reputable local furniture/mattress store.   If you are in the New England area, check out "Gardner Mattress".  They sell a very sturdy wood/metal foundation with their latex mattresses for about $350. as I recall.  Before I bought my latex mattress set from them I asked if they would sell the foundation separately and they said they would.   The foundation quality was the main reason I bought from them.   However, if I had it all to do over again, I'd get JUST the foundation and then custom build my latex mattress from an online seller.

Maybe I got it this time....haha.

Gardner latex mattress with 3 inch Foam Sweet Foam topper.

Adding 1 inch of Sensus memory foam from Overstock

Another view:

Cover it all with a Natura wool/cotton mattress pad:

Will give it the sleep test tonight.   I did notice that the fitted bottom sheet is so tight now that it probably makes the whole setup firmer.   Jersey sheet next?   Geeze!

Memory foam over latex.....my mattress keeps getting thicker! - markbnh1

So here is my latest quest for the perfect mattress!   I think someone wiser than me on this forum once said that if you are 90% happy it's best to stop there and be thankful.  Too bad I don't listen.  I now am trying 1 inch of Sensus memory foam over my latex mattress.  The Sensus came from Overstock today and was in excellent condition....no complaints.  It measures just a bit over what they specify in their ad....about 58 X 79 for the Queen size.  It's a little smaller than my 3 inch top layer of latex but not enough to worry about.  It arrived in 10 days (which included 2 weekends).

I now have from bottom up:

8.5 inch encased Gardner Latex mattress ( 6 inch 40 ILD,  2.5 inch 32 ILD)

3 inch uncovered "medium" (24-28 ILD) natural talalay latex from...

For the record I am not saying buying toppers is ideal, but on a limited budget it could be.  Someone show me even one pillowtop mattress that is made with nothing but high quality materials for less than say even $1500 for a queen set and I will be a little shocked.  Gardner seemed to be the closest but with some very basic innersprings being used.  The problem with most pillowtops is that they really don't last very long at all...the whole point of buying a firm bed and adding your own upholstery is so you can replace that upholstery if/when it fails.  If your upholstery is built right into the mattress in the form of a pillowtop you are hooped.  Even the latest Stearns and Foster models we got up in Canada last year that were supposed to be much more durable due to HD foam I have had...
Re: 4 lb Serta Mattress Topper not firm enough...please help - lookingnow

Sandman and Phoenix:  The whole industry really ought to be prosecuted. indecision

Gardner says I have 2" of 28 ILD talalay.  They sell a 3" topper of 20ILD from Latex Int'l (Rejuvenate Line) for $440!

I will be looking for a local store, even factory, to get a latex blend topper because I'd like to feel it first.  If there's nothing in-store locally, do you have any suggestions for on-line purchasing?

Thanks much, and Happy new Year.

Phoenix,

I have a very firm, full size, pocket coil bed that is handmade with very little poly.  I am 5'3" tall and weigh 120 lbs.  I have no health/pain problems.  I need a topper that will allow my shoulder to sink in during side sleeping, but firm enough for stomach sleeping, as you said.  I bought a 3", 4 lb. topper.  After a few hours of decent-feeling side sleeping, it hammocked and was too soft when I turned on my stomach.  I need a very supportive, dense foam and maybe I should have gotten "visco-elastic" instead of "memory foam"?  The high quality Temprupedic feels great to me, but I can't afford it, and this bed is new, but I knew I'd need a good topper to soften it up.  I'm not crazy about latex - it feels like a hard, layered futon mattress when I'm on side.

Here are a few options for you. I didn't check to see specifically how close to Boston these all are but they're all at least in MA. A call may give you suggestions or ideas for other outlets from those that are a little far away. You would certainly have lots of testing grounds from these and possibly some good "buying sources" as well.

Phoenix

http://www.goodnightnaturals.com/ Retailer. Has a good assortment of different latex mattresses. Their names are a private label but could be WJ Southard mattresses and/or others.

http://www.gardnermattress.com/products.asp Manufacturer. Has a range of latex options including layering. Good feedback here and elsewhere abou their quality.

http://www.bostonbed.com/products/bbc_mattresses.html#pll Retailer. Factory direct for Therapedic (national manufacturer for Kathy Ireland and others). Has some "mostly latex" and some "some latex" options but probably least valuable for latex testing here.

Need Help Identifying this Mattress - mybedsucks
Nov 8, 2010 8:04 AM
I need help finding out where this mattress came from (see pictures below).  This was my old bed that I threw away several months ago, and I haven't been able to sleep as well as I used to ever since.

It's a Twin XL bed, and if you look at the base, it has a flower pattern on a green background, which is the same pattern used for the mattress on top (you just can't see it because my blue bed sheets are covering it).

I bought this bed used from a college student about 3 years ago, so I don't know where she got it from, and I have no way to contact her now to find out.  The mattress did have a faded label on it that might have identified the brand or manufacturer, but unfortunately I never paid any attention to it before,...

Latex over coils? - eoren1
Mar 23, 2011 4:22 AM
Was at the local Gardner Mattress store and found two mattresses I liked.  One was their 'firm' talalay latex mattress.  I think around 8".

Other was a 3-4" talalay latex on coils.  Never seen that combo before.  There was minimal polyurethane (I think) foam on the perimeter to keep the coils in place.  It was very comfy with less of the 'springy' sensation that I feel with the pure latex mattresses.

Just wanted to get your thoughts on this....
