Going to the Mattresses - How to cut through the marketing gimmicks of Sealy, Serta, and the rest.

Here's a fun game I play. First, I walk into a mattress store and ask what's on sale. Then, I throw my hands in the air and shout along with the salesman, "EVERYTHING'S ON SALE!!!!" Oh how we laugh, the salesman and I. And while he's still chuckling, I turn around and walk out, because I fricking hate mattress salesmen.

Is there a more maddening industry? They confuse us with silly product names (the Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Fletcher Ultra Plush Pillowtop or the Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Brookmere Plush?). They flummox us with bogus science ("pocketed coils"? "Microtek foundations"? "Fiberlux"?). And they weigh us down with useless features (silk damask ticking?). It's like buying a used car, and almost as expensive—I've seen mattresses going...

You have gone right to the heart of what I meant. I want to read the honest opinions of people who have lived with a product. It's the dishonest opinions I'm concerned about.

I am pleased to hear that WTB-Mattress takes steps to weed out fake reviews. The credibility of the website depends, in part, on the credibility of the reviews.

I am not a fan of Select Comfort mattresses, but when all the reviews are either 5-stars or 1-star, I really have to question how legitimate any of them are. Tempur-Pedic reviews are also that way - 100% positive or 100% negative.

The bottom line, really, is that the credibility of the entire industry is very very low, from the infomercials to the websites to the reviews. I am pleased to note that, thank God, there are some notable exceptions to the rule....

I have no personal experience with them, but here is a link to a search I did on the old forum - lots of people here have tried them.

They appear to be pretty good. Most here would incourage the use of a separate core and topper, but man are Carpe Diem sets expensive! ($6K to $10K) They use pocket coil springs, which should give less partner disturbance and conform to your back well. And most of thir toppers are talalay latex (although probably not the highest quality, since they are not made in the US by Latex International.) Latex is good because it will not sag for 20 years. It just seems that one could accomplish the same thing for less. Look at MyComfortmyway.com. They sell a good Leggett and Platt coil core/foundation with virtually no foam (for $1K) and their gel toppers for $1K to $3K. Of course, you...

You can sort of pick out the fakes *and* fanatics by their language used, very broad sweeping statements, generally.  I try to weed both of those out, when comparing products.  That's a good point about freebies given reviewers, too, PC Mag raved about a company who we bought a computer from and they had ZERO customer service, then robbed us, by forcing us to pay for a sound system we never received.   When reported to the credit card company (Amex) they lied and we ended up paying for it.  Never used that card again, either, or bought another PC Mag.

We also should keep in mind that people who are disgruntled with a product tend to leave more reviews than those happy campers who are too busy to go online and say something positive about their experiences.   Another thing I found shocking is that even if a fraudulent reviewer is discovered, the users...

Thanks for all the info.

I'm leaning towards going firmer rather than softer.  Especially since I'm on the heavier end of the scale and I really want some decent support.

As far as memory foam goes, I really would like something more "natural", especially since I have a young son that often ends up in bed with us. (Even though we have the pillows.)  As well, even though my partner likes the feel of memory foam, he really likes the durability of latex. (As in, not having to go through this process again soon).

Oddly enough, the hardest part for me is trying to decide which company to go with, not the idea of a kit itself. Well that, and how to configure the layers.  I am going to be importing this bed into Canada, so I really, really, really don't want to do more than one exchange.  Luckily, I live about...
Simmons Exceptionale First Takes - gatorinfla

Ok, in the old forum I asked a question about the Simmons Exceptionale mattress as I was mainly concerned about all the negativity on the net about them.  Well, I went ahead and pulled the trigger and got the Exceptionale Extra Firm from Macy's here in Florida (the Vanderbilt "Ashton").  My take/hope on it was that most of the issues were related to the compression of the foam layers in the pillowtops (people reported them developing valleys, etc) and not the core mattress/springs.  I had a Sealy with 4" of latex that had significant depressions and didn't want a repeat.

The mattress was delivered over a week ago and sleeping on it was actually a bit rough at first.  While my wife didn't have any problems, I did have some issues with getting some sore spots if I ended up sleeping on my side.  In addition, I found the the combination of...
Gardner Mattresses: Has anyone seen these mattresses in person? What do you think of the quality & comfort? - centralpark

Is this a good, trustworthy company to deal with? What is the price range of mattresses? Right now my budget will only allow me to spend about $2,000 on a full size mattress.

I need a decent mattress that is not too firm yet not too soft and provides the proper amount of back support and relief of pressure points.  I'm 5'6" and in the 130  pound range.

I don't want to buy from Sleepy's or Raymour & Flanigan based on lots of customer complaints. There really aren't any more local stores that sell mattresses except for Macy's, and their selection is limited. I'm desperate for a comfortable mattress, as I've been sleeping on an Aerobed. I don't know whether it is worth the long drive to Gardner Mattress.

Thanks for any info about Gardner mattresses and any other suggestions....
