S Brands Misrepresentation - budgy
Nov 29, 2010 11:00 AM
Those of you here who know me well, know that I never joined this forum with the intention of talking negatively about any particular brand.  However I have to say how glad I am that I am no longer selling any S branded product....not exactly because I think they are overrated like most here do.  Mostly because of the lack of transparency in the product.

I had a warranty return mattress come back to the store today 'high end' Stearns and Foster pillowtop.  The specs on this bed list wool and silk fibres in the pillowtop, as well as latex and memory foam, although undescript on how much exactly they used.  After cutting this thing open and actually inspecting I see that the latex and memory foam are bonded together into the same 1/2" layer, so they are not even seperate layers.  There is no wool or silk...

FYI, I have the IKEA Malm bed frame, queen size, with the Sultan Lade slats, as was linked in an earlier post.

I've done a lot of woodworking as well as furniture design and construction.  I would like to build a beautiful bed frame from wood, but this past February my time and money budget was restricted and a friend alerted me that the IKEA frame was on sale ($120) so I went ahead and bought it, planning to use it for a few years. I'm glad I did. It's a very solid and sturdy frame, very efficiently designed. The Sultan Lade slats are non-adjustable and work very well, although an upgrade to the more expensive adjustable slats may offer some additional zoning options.

Several months after buying the frame I did some mattress demoing and bought a Stearns and Foster mattress, a luxury firm. It...

In general, poly foam will not last but latex foam can and does last longer than innersprings ... especially if you don't go too soft on top. It also has the best combination of qualities that can provide comfort, support, and durability of any foam. Some polyfoams are "close" but you generally won't find them in a mattress without going to a custom manufacturer that uses them (their own brand) or "build your own" and even then it is "unknown" exactly how long they will last as the better ones haven't been on the market long enough to really know. Unless you go in the direction of a "supermattress" that uses natural fibers and different stuffings in their build, you will have some type of foam in your mattress and this will be the "weak link" in how long it lasts and how comfortable and...
Whatsthebest Inc. and Flobeds relationship changed? - Phoenix
Dec 8, 2010 4:38 PM
I have taken this from 2 other posts in another thread and re-posted it in a new thread since I believe it is important to know ...

While I was on the Alibaba website looking for "Chinese Talalay", I also came across this ... http://www.alibaba.com/member/cm105954858.html which is Whatsthebest Inc. selling Flobeds wholesale. Their address is listed as Cameroon but the rest of it is correct.

So I have to ask ... Is Flobeds and Whatsthebest inc the same company? I thought that Flobeds was just a forum sponsor and that they were otherwise independent. Has their relationship changed?

Just to put some context into this, there are two discussions on the legacy forum regarding Flobeds sponsorship and how it may affect the forum. The moderators replied in both cases and it seemed very clear that there was no "business connection"...

I hope this is not too "charlie brown's teacher" like (a joke coming from another thread :))

If this is too long the short version is ... I believe any commonly used "layers" in a mattress can provide proper support and comfort but they do it with a different "feel" and in different ways. Incorrect layering or construction for an individual may result in problems with a certain material but it is not the material itself which is the culprit but incorrect construction (for the individual) or "incorrect" use of that material in a certain construction. Sometimes this incorrect use is so common that people believe that certain materials are not appropriate at all. Because of the different feels between different constructions as well, many people will have clear preferences for one "system" over another. So latex over innersprings in some cases may make it easier to get...

Do you think a poly mattress is still going to be significantly better than a coil-based Sterns & Foster Deacon Ridge?

The Stearns and Foster IS a poly mattress (the poly mattresses that are mostly mentioned here are almost all on top of springs) and is exactly what I personally would be trying to avoid. It's only good quality is that it has decent springs which would in no way be enough for me to consider it as a viable option.

Phoenix

PS: If you meant here latex mattress (rather than poly) ... then the answer is a clear and resounding YES ... whether it is a latex comfort layer on a latex core or latex on a good innerspring core. Even a latex comfort layer on a poly core would be much preferable to me. More than 1" of poly in the comfort...

Before you go with Flobeds or Sleepez, I would certainly try to lay on some latex beds first so you have a sense of how you feel about them and the different layering and softness that feels good for you. This is what reddog did in another thread and even though he was in a worse situation than you are (he had already bought his bed and could only do a "comfort exchange"), he ended up doing really well. There are at least 3 current threads going where it is clear that if you start with a mattress with more than 1" of poly between you and the core (springs or latex core), that adjusting it afterwards can create issues that are much more easily solved without the poly in the first place. No matter how good a mattress feels in the store, knowing what is in it can help...

In short, yes. For one thing, has your weight gone up? surprise

We are in the process of replacing a 10-year-old Stearns & Foster that held up well. From what I see now, many midline mattresses have cut quality to hold prices down. I don't think anything of the supposed "no flip" mattresses - the only thing that got us eight good years out of the S&F was that it was a basic firm style and we could flip and rotate it frequently. With a Euro-top, you can only rotate, so you're going to get "canoes" a lot sooner, even assuming that all material and maker quality is the same as your old mattress. Three years on a midprice mattress with no flipping... and you get depressions of several sorts, mostly in the morning when you wake up un-rested and achy again. (Trust me,...

Latex Bed Q's - sleeper weight, foundation type & SleepEZ latex types - Gunner
Nov 30, 2010 4:29 PM
I am getting ready to replace our Stearns & Foster innerspring, which did well enough (especially after we added a memory foam topper) but at age ten resembles two bread loaf pans...

After far more research and confusion than I expected, I've settled on a latex mattress. Research, research, research and reading forums like this one have answered most of my questions, but I would appreciate some feedback on a few remaining points. I have settled on a 10000 model (10 inch, three 3-inch layer) from SleepEZ. I know that they can answer many questions and help me choose the right density foam, but I'd like to get as much advance info as I can.

I presently weigh about 270 and am aiming for 245 by summer and eventually somewhere under 230 - doable and necessary as I've hit the age where I can't afford to...
