Thanks for the input everyone; and thanks, sandman, for providing your updated configuration.

Last night, a couple of hours before bedtime, I performed the surgery.  Used a utility knife around the top edge of the pillowtop (layers of eggcrate and batting, stitched together), leaving the rolled hem in place.  I then placed the Novaform Gel topper on top of the ~1.5" of polyfoam (which is edge crimped to the coils), and then placed the old pillowtop on top of that!  Crazy, huh?

Anyway, I believe it did give me some insight into what I'm looking for.  Last nights set up was nice and pillowy, but basically too soft for me.  It definitely did not remind of the Custom Comfort Tradere (a very firm mattress) with the 2" 19 ILD latex topper.

I contacted Aireloom several times asking for info on two of their mattresses and they just will NOT give me the data.  All i want to do is compare them side-by-side to help me determin which would work better for me but they just will not help me.  All they do is tell me that i have to deal with the sales people at the dealers and we all know that most of them are NOT reliable.  I've already caught them lying to me about some of the features of the beds.  When Peggy, Airelooms Customer Service 'dept', would not answer my simple question after I asked it 4 times, and was given the run-around 4 times, she told me 'I have gone as far as i can with you' and hung up on me.  Then i got a manager on the phone, Gary, the CFO and I again explained that...
Re: Sleep Science Celeste / Vega? Comforpedic? (Memory Foam & Latex) - slpngoc

I just bought a 2.5" Sleep Innovations gel memory foam topper from Costco for my SleepEZ 10000.  I noticed they had a few Sleep Innovations Novaform gel memory foam mattresses in the store.  Didn't notice the price.  Around here, memory foam is something you see quite often.  Latex is pretty rare around here.  You see one type of latex pillow in Penneys or Sears while there's several memory foam pillows and tons of polyester pillows or down.

I don't know about the Sleep Science mattresses.  Costco only had Posturepedic innersprings on display and the Novaform.

Simmons Comforpedic?  That is one mattress I never did see around the Bay Area.  I think it is Simmons memory foam mattress.  Never did see one.

Re: IKEA Mattress? - slpngoc

I've heard that IKEA mattresses are pretty good for the money.  Just keep in mind they only allow one exchange and no refunds.

About the cheapest regular stores would be online ordering from WalMart and Costco.  Sears is one of the cheapest department stores.  I kinda like this little known Simmons mattress named 'St Bees Evenloft' at Sears.  It has not button tucks on surface, so an even surface.  It also combines reg. foam with some memory foam.  About $875 for twin set at Sears.

Learning about the online latex dealers like Flobeds, SleepEZ, etc... will help too.

what sleepez configuration do you have?

I have the SleepEZ 10000 with firm/med/soft bottom to top, all talalay blend.  Interestingly, the cover has the pattern 'organic' all over it.

I talked to Shawn twice, told him I'm 195 lbs, 6'2" tall, mostly side sleeper with an old right shoulder injury.  He said I fall 'right in the middle' for this setup.  Initial impressions are quite good:  I feel well supported, it's quite cool, comfortable.  pretty easy to turn over.  I feel good about it at this point.  Good chance I'll order my slatted foundation today, get it off that 4 week old Serta iComfort 'box spring' , yuck.

UPDATE - So far So Good. No issues to report.

It took roughly 5-6 weeks for the smell to completely disappear but it does go away. As far as comfort goes, the Sales people and sleepy's test machine were 100% correct. Firm was brutal for the first couple of days while my back adjusted to the new mattress but I have not had any back pain at all since then.  So we are definetly in the honeymoon phase at the moment as I have no back pain or sag issues to report but after reading other reviews and hearing from other users on here I am definetly on the lookout for any issues.

Completely happy with the purchase so far.

Regarding the foam-over-coils, it is fastened about every 8 or 10 inches, and looks like it would be very easy to rip away.  Between the foam and coils is a single sheet of some Tyvek-looking material.  Probably the same spun-poly material that encases the individual coils.  That sheet is also fastened around the perimeter, and does not appear to be in danger of detachment.

And now that you bring it up, trying to perfect a setup on the Simmons sounds like it'll be a waste of time and money if my plan is to eventually buy a new Serta from Costco.  The Simmons is 10 years old, and the coils must certainly be shot -- maybe not on my wife's side, but definitely on mine!  Or are they?

Thanks for working through this with me.  I think I'll go to one of the more reputable dealers...

About to perform surgery... have pre-op questions! - Joe_Blowe

I've been lurking for a few months now gathering information, and decided to sign up to get some final advice.

My wife (5'4", 105#, back sleeper) and I (6'2", 240#, side sleeper) purchased a Simmons (cal-king, pillowtop) 'Exquisite Ultimate Plush' in October 2001, and it's been on it's last legs for a few years now blush

Initially I was going to buy a whole new set, and then I stumbled across this site and all of my plans went up in smoke!   My new plan is to perform surgery on the Simmons (I've alread made a 12" incision to examine the internals), and place a mix of latex and memory foam on top.  If the Simmons coils are completely shot (they're almost 10 years old), I will buy a Sealy Alanson from Costco (mattress only, $520), and excise any foam from...

Re: Simmons Comforpedic Rava, Indigo Point Gel or Serta iComfort prodigy or revolution?? - nmaschek1

I've laid on every mattress from every store in my metropolitan area and I always come back to the Comforpedic Loft Indigo Point Gel.  At Denver mattress, it's called the Marekerk Gel, but still has the same center third Gel as the Indigo.  It's also called the Dulwich Plush and Southwark at other places on the Web.  The only bed I would prefer is the Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe.  But that's 4 grand for a queen, plus it'll probably sag over time as what reviews say about Tempurpedic.  I haven't heard anything about sagging for the Comforpedic Loft's at all.  I also really liked the Memoryworks Olivewood Ultra Plush at Macy's.  But can't find any reviews or comparisons on the Web, and it also seems like it would be hot and sag over time.  I have to say that the Comforpedic would be the best value and comfort for the...
